Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Vandaag worden heidenen en joden in één adem vermeld om het grote thema van de Romeinenbrief in het licht te stellen . Allen hebben gezondigd. Allen worden ‘om niet’ gerechtvaardigd door het geloof in Jezus Christus. Het is toch duidelijk, zegt Paulus, dat de heidenen niet door de Wet gerechtvaardigd worden. Zonde is de menselijke situatie. Verlossing is Gods antwoord. De leer van de Romeinenbrief is niet zo moeilijk als ze lijkt. In korte woorden geresumeerd: wij verdienen Gods liefde niet door menselijke prestaties. God liefde komt eerst en onze goede werken zijn het dankbaar antwoord op de liefde van God, die ons altijd vóór is. Waar blijft de eigen roem? God redt. Niet wij redden onszelf.
EERSTE LEZING Rom. 3,21-29
De mens wordt gerechtvaardigd door te geloven,
niet door de wet te onderhouden.
Broeders en zusters,
Thans is buiten de wet om
Gods gerechtigheid openbaar geworden,
waarvan de wet en de profeten getuigenis afleggen:
Gods gerechtigheid,
die zich door het geloof in Jezus Christus meedeelt
aan allen die geloven,
zonder enig onderscheid.
Want allen hebben gezondigd
en allen zijn verstoken van de goddelijke heerlijkheid.
En allen worden zij om niet door zijn genade gerechtvaardigd,
krachtens de verlossing die in Christus Jezus is.
Hem heeft God, voor wie gelooft,
aangewezen als zoenoffer door zijn bloed.
God wilde zo zijn gerechtigheid tonen,
want Hij had in zijn verdraagzaamheid
de zonden van het verleden vergeven.
Hij heeft zijn gerechtigheid willen tonen
nu, in deze tijd,
opdat zou blijken dat Hijzelf rechtvaardig is
en rechtvaardig maakt ieder die leeft uit het geloof.
Waar blijft dan de eigen roem?
Die is onmogelijk geworden!
Door welke wet?
Door die van de werken?
Neen, door de wet van het geloof.
Ik beweer juist, dat de mens gerechtvaardigd wordt door te geloven,
niet door de wet te onderhouden.
Is God soms alleen de God van de Joden
en niet van de heidenen?
Neen, ook van de heidenen,
want er is slechts één God.
TUSSENZANG Ps. 130(129), 1-2, 3-4b, 4c-6
De Heer is steeds barmhartig,
zijn genade onbeperkt.
Uit de diepte roep ik, Heer,
luister naar mijn stem.
Wil aandachtig horen
naar mijn smeekgebed.
Als Gij zonden blijft gedenken,
Heer, wie houdt dan stand?
Maar bij U vind ik vergeving,
daarom zoekt mijn hart naar U.
Op de Heer stel ik mijn hoop,
op zijn woord vertrouw ik.
Gretig zie ik naar Hem uit
meer dan wachters naar de ochtend.
Meer dan wachters naar de ochtend
hunkert Israël naar Hem.

EVANGELIE Lc. 11, 47-54
Dit geslacht zal verantwoordelijk gesteld worden
voor het bloed van alle profeten dat vergoten is
vanaf de grondvesting der wereld.
In die tijd zei Jezus tot de wetgeleerden:
“Wee u!
Gij bouwt de graven van de profeten,
maar uw vaderen hebben hen gedood.
Hiermee legt gij getuigenis af
dat gij instemt met de werken van uw vaderen,
want zij doodden hen en gij bouwt hun graven.
Daarom ook heeft Gods wijsheid gezegd:
Ik zal profeten en afgezanten tot hen zenden,
maar sommigen van hen zullen zij doden en vervolgen,
zodat dit geslacht verantwoordelijk gesteld zal worden
voor het bloed van alle profeten,
dat vergoten is vanaf de grondvesting der wereld,
vanaf het bloed van Abel tot het bloed van Zacharias,
die gedood werd tussen het altaar en het tempelgebouw.
Ja, zeg Ik u,
dit geslacht zal verantwoordelijk zijn!
Wee u, wetgeleerden!
Gij hebt de sleutel van de kennis weggenomen.
Zelf zijt ge niet binnengegaan,
en hun die wilden binnengaan
hebt ge het belet.”
Toen Hij naar buiten kwam,
begonnen de schriftgeleerden en de Farizeeën
– hevig op Hem gebeten –
Hem allerlei vragen te stellen,
met de heimelijke bedoeling
Hem op grond van de een of andere uitlating te kunnen vangen.

87. Wanneer men zich de weerspiegeling van God in alles wat bestaat realiseert, bespeurt het hart het verlangen de Heer te prijzen om al zijn schepselen en Hem samen met hen te aanbidden, zoals zichtbaar wordt in het zeer mooie lied van de heilige Franciscus van Assisi:
“Wees geprezen, mijn Heer, met al uw schepselen
vooral zuster zon, die de dag is, en door wie Gij ons verlicht.
En zij is schoon en stralend met grote glans:
van U, Allerhoogste, is zij het zinnebeeld…
Wees geprezen, mijn Heer, om zuster maan en de sterren,
aan de hemel hebt Gij ze gevormd, helder en kostbaar en mooi.
Wees geprezen, mijn Heer, om broeder wind
en om de lucht en de wolken en het kalme weer en ieder jaargetijde,
waardoor Gij uw schepselen ondersteuning geeft.
Wees geprezen, mijn Heer, om zuster water,
die zeer nuttig en nederig en kostbaar en zuiver is.
Wees geprezen, mijn Heer, om broeder vuur,
waardoor Gij de nacht verlicht:

Consideration
Today Gentiles and Jews are mentioned in the same breath to highlight the great theme of the letter to the Romans. All have sinned. All are justified ‘freely’ through faith in Jesus Christ. It is clear, says Paul, that the Gentiles are not justified by the Law. Sin is the human condition. Salvation is God’s answer. The teaching of the letter to the Romans is not as difficult as it seems. Resumed in short words: we do not earn God’s love through human performance. God’s love comes first and our good works are the grateful response to God’s love, which is always before us. Where is the self glory? God saves. Not we save ourselves.
FIRST READING Rom 3,21-29
Man is justified by faith,
not by keeping the law.
From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Rome
Brothers and sisters,
Today, apart from the law
God’s righteousness has become manifest beyond the law,
of which the law and the prophets bear witness:
God’s righteousness,
which proclaims itself through faith in Jesus Christ
to all who believe,
without distinction.
For all have sinned
and all are deprived of the divine glory.
And all are justified freely by his grace,
through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
God has appointed him as atoning sacrifice through his blood for those who believe.
God thus wished to demonstrate His righteousness,
because in His forbearance He had
forgive the sins of the past.
He wanted to show his righteousness
now, in this time,
so that it might appear that He Himself is righteous
and makes righteous all who live by faith.
So where is the glory?
It has become impossible!
By what law?
By the law of works?
No, by the law of faith.
I maintain that man is justified by faith,
not by keeping the law.
Is God only the God of the Jews
and not of the Gentiles?
No, even of the Gentiles,
for there is only one God.

but some of them they shall kill and persecute,
so that this generation shall be made responsible
for the blood of all the prophets,

this generation will be responsible!
