Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Vandaag en morgen lezen we uit het apocalyptisch deel van Daniël. De twee lezingen maken één geheel uit. Vandaag is er het visioen; morgen de uitleg. Het is voor ons niet zo belangrijk al deze dieren en horens te identificeren in historische koningen. De bedoeling van de auteur is al te duidelijk. Hij leeft ten tijde van de vervolging van Antiochus IV en van de Makkabeeënopstand. Hij wil het beproefde volk bemoedigen door de redding van Godswege aan te kondigen. Welke woorden spreken wij tot mensen die beproefd worden?
EERSTE LEZING Dan. 7, 2-14 of 7, 2-3.9-14
Met de wolken des hemels
zag ik iemand aankomen die op een Mensenzoon geleek.
In die dagen sprak Daniël:
“In mijn nachtelijk visioen zag ik
dat de vier winden des hemels
de grote zee in beroering brachten
en vier grote dieren eruit opstegen.
En terwijl ik bleef toekijken
zag ik dat er tronen werden geplaatst
en een Hoogbejaarde zich neerzette;
zijn gewaad was wit als sneeuw
en zijn hoofdhaar blank als wol.
Zijn troon bestond uit vlammen,
de wielen ervan uit laaiend vuur.
Een stroom van vuur welde op en vloeide voor Hem uit.
Duizend maal duizenden dienden Hem
en tienduizend maal tienduizenden stonden vóór Hem.
Het gerechtshof zette zich neer en de boeken werden geopend.
Toen zag ik dat het vierde beest
vanwege de grootspraak van de horen
gedood werd, en zijn kadaver aan het vuur werd prijsgegeven
en zo vernietigd werd.
Ook de overige dieren werden beroofd van hun macht,
maar ze werden voor een korte tijd in leven gelaten.
In mijn nachtelijk visioen zag ik toen
met de wolken des hemels iemand aankomen
die op een Mensenzoon geleek.
Hij ging naar de Hoogbejaarde en werd voor Hem geleid.
Toen werd Hem heerschappij gegeven,
luister en koninklijke macht;
alle volken, stammen en talen brachten Hem hun hulde.
Zijn heerschappij is een eeuwige heerschappij
die nooit vergaat,
zijn koninkrijk gaat nooit te gronde.”

Looft de Heer, prijst en verheft Hem eeuwig.
Looft Hem, bergen en heuvels,
al wat daar groeit, prijst de Heer.

vogels des hemels, prijst Hem.
Looft Hem, wilde en tamme dieren,
prijst en verheft Hem eeuwig.

Wanner ge al deze dingen ziet
weet dan dat het Rijk Gods nabij is.
en zei tot zijn leerlingen:
“Kijkt naar de vijgenboom en naar alle andere bomen:
Zodra ze uitlopen weet ge vanzelf, als ge dat ziet,
dat de zomer in aantocht is.
Zo ook, wanneer ge al deze dingen ziet,
weet dan dat het Rijk Gods nabij is.
Voorwaar, Ik zeg u:
dit geslacht zal niet voorbijgaan vóór dit alles geschied is.
Hemel en aarde zullen voorbijgaan
maar mijn woorden zullen niet voorbijgaan.”

130. In de filosofische en theologische visie op de schepping die ik heb trachten voor te houden, blijkt duidelijk dat de menselijke persoon met de bijzondere eigenschap van zijn rede en zijn wetenschap geen externe factor is die volkomen moet worden buiten gesloten. Hoewel de mens in de planten- en dierenwereld kan ingrijpen en zich ervan kan bedienen, wanneer dat noodzakelijk is voor zijn leven, leert de Catechismus toch dat proefnemingen op dieren alleen maar gewettigd zijn, als “ze binnen redelijke perken blijven en ertoe bijdragen mensen te verzorgen of mensenlevens te redden”. Hij herinnert er met kracht aan dat de macht van de mens grenzen heeft en dat “dieren nutteloos laten lijden of hun leven verspillen in strijd is met de menselijke waardigheid”. Ieder gebruik en iedere proefneming ” vereist een religieuze eerbied voor de heelheid van de schepping”.

Consideration
Today and tomorrow we read from the apocalyptic part of Daniel. The two readings form a whole. Today there is the vision; tomorrow the explanation. It is not important for us to identify all these animals and horns in historical kings. The author’s intention is all too clear. He lives at the time of the persecution of Antiochus IV and of the Maccabean revolt. He wants to encourage the afflicted people by announcing their salvation by God. What words do we speak to people who are being tried?

With the clouds of heaven
I saw someone coming who looked like the son of man.
From the prophet Daniel
In those days Daniel said:
“In my vision by night I saw
that the four winds of heaven
stirred up the great sea
and four great beasts came up out of it.
And while I kept looking on
I saw thrones being set
and a High Elder was prostrate;
his robe was white as snow
and his hair was white as wool.
His throne was made of flames,
its wheels of blazing fire.
A stream of fire rose up and flowed before Him.
A thousand times thousands served him
and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.
The court sat down and the books were opened.
Then I saw the fourth beast
because of the boasts of the hearers
and I saw the fourth beast slain because of the boasting of the heathen, and his cadaver given up to the fire
and so was destroyed.
The other beasts were also deprived of their power,
but they were left alive for a short time.
Then in my night vision
with the clouds of heaven I saw someone coming
who looked like the son of man.
He went to the High Elder and was led before Him.
Then He was given dominion,
splendour and royal power;
all nations, tribes and languages paid Him their homage.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion
that never perisheth,
His kingdom shall never perish.”

130. In the philosophical and theological vision of creation which I have tried to put forward, it is clear that the human person, with the special quality of his reason and his science, is not an external factor which must be completely excluded. Although man can intervene in the plant and animal world and use it when necessary for his life, the Catechism teaches that experiments on animals are only legitimate if “they remain within reasonable limits and help to care for people or save human lives”. It forcefully reminds us that human power has limits and that “to allow animals to suffer needlessly or to waste their lives is contrary to human dignity”. Every use and experimentation “requires a religious respect for the wholeness of creation”.
