Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Samuël bewerkte de overgang van de chaos in de Rechtertijd naar de monarchie. Hij stelde eerst Saul, dan David aan. Die overgang naar de monarchie mag men niet idealiseren. Er bestond een duidelijke tegenstroom tegen het koningschap. Reeds in het boek der Rechters hebben we de fabel van de bomen die een koning zochten, tot alleen de doornstruik bereid was. Hier hebben we een even striemende waarschuwing tegen het koningschap. Niemand is koning over Israël dan God alleen. Toch zal de tendens naar monarchie het halen. (Het wordt hier voorgesteld als gril van het volk: wij willen een koning zoals andere volkeren. In feite zal de dreiging en het Filistijns gevaar ook wel meegespeeld hebben).
EERSTE LEZING I Sam. 8, 4-7.10-22a
Gij zult bij de Heer uw nood klagen
over de koning die gij zelf gewild hebt,
maar de Heer zal niet antwoorden.
Uit het eerste boek Samuël
In die dagen kwamen de oudsten van Israël bijeen,
begaven zich naar Samuël in Rama en zeiden tot hem :
“Gij zijt oud geworden
en uw zonen volgen uw voorbeeld niet.
“Stel daarom een koning aan om rechter over ons te zijn,
een koning zoals alle andere volken die hebben.”
maar Samuël vond het ongepast dat ze voorstelden :
“Geef ons een koning om rechter over ons te zijn.”
daarom bad hij tot de Heer.
Maar de Heer zei tot Samuël :
“Geef gehoor aan het volk, wat zij u ook vragen,
want ze verwerpen niet u, maar Mij;
Mij willen ze niet langer als koning.”
Toen bracht Samuël het volk
dat hem om een koning had gevraagd,
op de hoogte van wat de Heer had gezegd.
Hij zei :
“De koning die over u heerst
zal de volgende rechten doen gelden :
“Uw zonen zal hij opeisen voor zijn wagens,
voor zijn paarden en om zijn wagen te escorteren,
om ze aan te stellen
als leider van duizend en leider van vijftig,
om zijn akkers te ploegen,
zijn oogst binnen te halen,
wapens te maken voor de oorlog
en zijn wagens uit te rusten.
“Uw dochters zal hij opeisen om zalf te bereiden,
te koken en te bakken.
“Uw beste akkers, wijngaarden en olijftuinen
zal hij u afnemen en ze aan zijn dienaren geven.
“Van uw oogsten en de opbrengst van uw wijngaarden
zal hij tienden heffen
en die aan zijn hovelingen en dienaren geven.
“Uw slaven en slavinnen, uw sterkste jongemannen en uw ezels
zal hij voor zichzelf laten werken.
“Van uw schapen en geiten zal hij tienden heffen.
“Zo wordt gij zijn slaven.
“Als het zover is,
zult gij bij de Heer uw nood klagen over de koning
die gij zelf gewild hebt,
maar dan zal de Heer niet antwoorden.”
Maar het volk wilde niet naar Samuël luisteren en zei :
“Toch moeten wij een koning hebben !
“Dan zijn wij gelijk aan alle andere volken.
“Onze koning zal rechter over ons zijn
en voor ons uittrekken om onze oorlogen te voeren.”
Samuël hoorde de verlangens van het volk aan
en bracht ze over aan de heer.
De Heer zei tot Samuël :
“Ga in op hun verzoek
en stel een koning over hen aan.”
TUSSENZANG
Uw gunsten, Heer, wil ik bezingen,
uw trouw verkondigen aan elk geslacht.
Gelukkig is het volk dat weet wat blijdschap is,
omdat het leeft, Heer, in het licht van uw gelaat.
Van dag tot dag vertrouwt het op uw Naam,
vindt het zijn kracht in uw gerechtigheid.
Want Gij zijt onze roem en onze sterkte,
uw gunst maakt ons een groot en machtig volk.
Want van de Heer ontvingen wij ons schild,
de Heilige van Israël gaf ons een koning.

Toon mij uw weg, Heer, bij tegenstand,

EVANGELIE Mc. 2, 1-12
De Mensenzoon heeft macht op aarde zonden te vergeven.
Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens Marcus
Toen Jezus in Kafarnaüm was teruggekeerd
en men hoorde dat Hij thuis was,
stroomden de mensen in zulk een aantal samen,
dat zelfs de ruimte voor de deur geen plaats meer bood
toen Hij hun zijn leer verkondigde.
Men kwam een lamme bij Hem brengen
die door vier mannen gedragen werd.
Omdat zij wegens de menigte geen mogelijkheid zagen
hem dicht bij Jezus te brengen,
legden ze het dak bloot boven de plaats waar Jezus zich bevond,
maakten er een opening in
en lieten het bed waarop de lamme uitgestrekt lag zakken.
Toen Jezus hun geloof zag, zei Hij tot de lamme :
“Mijn zoon, uw zonden zijn u vergeven.”
Er zaten enkele schriftgeleerden bij.
Ze zeiden bij zichzelf :
“Wat zegt die man daar ?
“Hij spreekt godslasterlijk !
“Wie anders kan er zonden vergeven dan God alleen ?”
Uit zichzelf wist Jezus aanstonds dat zij zo redeneerden
en Hij zei hun :
“Wat redeneert gij toch bij uzelf ?
“Wat is gemakkelijker, tot de lamme te zeggen :
Uw zonden zijn u vergeven,
of :
Sta op, neem uw bed en loop ?
“Welnu, opdat ge zult weten
dat de Mensenzoon macht heeft op aarde zonden te vergeven,
– sprak Hij tot de lamme –
“Ik zeg u,
sta op, neem uw bed mee en ga naar huis.”
De man stond op, nam zijn bed
en voor aller ogen ging hij onmiddellijk naar buiten.
Iedereen stond er versteld van,
en ze verheerlijkten God en zeiden :
“Zoiets hebben wij nog nooit gezien.”

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijke huis
179. Op sommige plaatsen is men samenwerkingsverbanden aan het ontwikkelen voor de exploitatie van hernieuwbare energie die een lokale zelfstandigheid en zelfs de verkoop van de overtollige productie toestaan. Dit eenvoudige voorbeeld wijst erop dat, terwijl de bestaande wereldorde niet in staat blijkt verantwoordelijkheid te nemen, de lokale instantie het verschil kan maken. Daar kunnen immers een grotere verantwoordelijkheid, een sterk gemeenschapsgevoel, een bijzonder vermogen om voor de ander te zorgen en een edelmoedigere creativiteit, een diepe liefde voor de eigen grond ontstaan, evenals het denken aan wat men kinderen en kleinkinderen achterlaat. Deze waarden hebben zeer diepe wortels in de oorspronkelijke bevolkingen. Daar het recht soms ten gevolge van de corruptie niet voldoende blijkt, is er onder druk van de bevolking een politieke beslissing vereist. De maatschappij moet door middel van niet gouvernementele organen en intermediaire organisaties de regeringen verplichten normenstelsels, procedures en strengere controles te ontwikkelen. Als de burgers de – nationale, regionale en gemeentelijke – politieke macht niet controleren, dan is er ook geen bestrijding van milieuschade mogelijk. Anderzijds kan gemeentelijke wetgeving doeltreffender zijn, als er overeenkomsten zijn tussen naburige volken om eenzelfde milieupolitiek te ondersteunen.

Consideration
Samuel made the transition from the chaos of the Judges’ time to a monarchy. First he appointed Saul, then David. One should not idealise this transition to the monarchy. There was a clear backlash against kingship. Already in the book of Judges we have the fable of the trees that looked for a king, until only the thorn bush was willing. Here we have an equally stark warning against kingship. No one is king over Israel but God alone. Yet the tendency towards monarchy will prevail. (It is presented here as a whim of the people: we want a king like other nations. In fact, the threat and the Philistine danger will also have played a role).
FIRST READING I Sam. 8, 4-7.10-22a
You shall complain to the Lord of your need
about the king whom you have wanted,
but the Lord will not answer.
From the first book of Samuel
In those days, the elders of Israel gathered together,
went to Samuel in Ramah and said to him :
“You are getting old
and your sons do not follow your example.
“Therefore appoint a king to be judge over us,
a king like all the other nations have.”
but Samuel thought it inappropriate that they suggested :
“Give us a king to be judge over us.”
So he prayed to the Lord.
But the Lord said to Samuel :
“Give ear to the people, whatever they ask you,
for they reject not you, but me;
They no longer want me as king.”
Then Samuel brought the people
who had asked him for a king,
of what the Lord had said.
He said :
“The king who rules over you
shall assert the following rights :
“Your sons he will claim for his chariots,
for his horses and to escort his chariots,
To appoint them
as the leader of a thousand and the leader of fifty
To plough his fields
to bring in his harvest,
to make weapons for war
and equip his chariots.
“Your daughters he will claim to prepare ointment,
to cook and bake.
“He will take your best fields, vineyards, and olive gardens
He will take from you and give them to his servants.
“Of your harvests and the produce of your vineyards
He will raise tithes
and give them to his courtiers and his servants.
“Your slaves and your bondswomen, your strong young men and your asses
He will make them work for himself.
“He shall raise tithes from your sheep and goats.
“Thus will ye be his slaves.
“When the time comes,
thou shalt complain unto the Lord of thy distress concerning the king
whom ye have desired for yourselves,
but the Lord will not answer.”
But the people would not listen to Samuel and said :
“Yet we must have a king!
“Then we shall be equal to all other nations.
“Our king shall be judge over us
and go before us to fight our wars.”
Samuel heard the desires of the people
and conveyed them to the Lord.
The Lord said to Samuel :
“Accept their request
and appoint a king over them.”
INTERLUDIUM
Your favours, Lord, I want to sing,
proclaim your faithfulness to every generation.
Happy is the people who know what joy is,
because they live, Lord, in the light of your countenance.
They trust in your name from day to day,
finding its strength in your righteousness.
For thou art our glory and our strength,

When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the lame man :
“My son, your sins are forgiven you.”
Some scribes were sitting there.

“He is speaking blasphemy!
“Who else can forgive sins but God?
Jesus himself knew immediately that they were thinking in this way
and He said to them:
“What is your reasoning?
“What could be easier than to say to the paralytic:
Your sins are forgiven you,
or :
Arise, take up thy bed and walk?
“Well, that you may know
that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins,
– He said to the lame man –
“I say to you,
get up, take your bed and go home.”
The man got up, took his bed
and immediately went out before everyone’s eyes.
Everyone was amazed,
and they glorified God and said :
“We have never seen anything like it.”

179. In some places, partnerships are being developed for the exploitation of renewable energy that allow for local autonomy and even the sale of surplus production. This simple example suggests that while the existing world order is unable to take responsibility, the local authority can make a difference. It is there that a greater sense of responsibility, a strong sense of community, a special ability to care for others and a generosity of spirit, a deep love of one’s own soil, as well as a thought for what one’s children and grandchildren will leave behind, can emerge. These values have very deep roots in the original populations. Since the law sometimes proves inadequate as a result of corruption, a political decision is required under pressure from the people. Society, through non-governmental bodies and intermediary organisations, must oblige governments to develop standards, procedures and stricter controls. If the citizens do not control the political power – national, regional and municipal – there will be no combating of environmental damage. On the other hand, if there are agreements between neighbouring nations to support similar environmental policies, then municipal legislation can be more effective.
