Mag ik hierbij uw aandacht vragen voor
de dagelijkse lezing van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil u deelgenoot maken van de vreugde van het Evangelie.
Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan deze vreugde ervaren door zijn hart te openen
voor de helende werking van Gods woord.

OVERWEGING
Een profeet spreekt omdat hij moet spreken van God. Dat is de vaste grond waarop hij staat, en het is de legitimering van zijn spreken als profeet: ik kan niet anders. God dwingt me. Wanneer staan wij op voor anderen en spreken we in Gods naam? Jezus leert ons dat we daarvoor niet bang hoeven te zijn. We mogen op God vertrouwen – hoe extreem de situatie ook is. Durf ik dat aan?
EERSTE LEZING Amos 3, 1-8; 4, 11-12
God de Heer heeft gesproken: wie zou er niet profeteren ?
Uit de Profeet Amos
Hoort het woord
dat de Heer spreekt
over u, de zonen van Israël,
over heel het geslacht
dat Hij uit Egypte heeft geleid:
“U alleen heb Ik uitverkoren
onder al de geslachten der aarde;
daarom roep Ik u ook ter verantwoording
voor al uw ongerechtigheden!
“Gaan er ooit twee mensen samen op weg
zonder dat zij elkaar gevonden hebben?
“Brult ooit een leeuw in het woud
zonder dat hij een prooi heeft?
“Of gromt er een leeuwenjong in zijn hol
zonder dat het iets te pakken heeft gekregen?
“Schiet een vogel omlaag naar de knip op de grond
zonder dat daar een lokaas ligt?
“Of wordt de knip van de grond opgenomen
zonder dat er iets gevangen is?
“Wordt in een stad de bazuin gestoken
zonder dat de bewoners beven?
“Gebeurt er ooit in een stad een ramp
zonder dat de Heer daar de hand in heeft?
“Zo ook doet God de Heer nooit iets
zonder dat Hij zijn besluit onthult
aan zijn dienaars, de profeten.
“De leeuw heeft gebruld:
Wie zou er niet vrezen?
“God de Heer heeft gesproken,
wie zou er niet profeteren?”
En verder spreekt de Heer:
“Ik heb u ondersteboven gekeerd,
even geweldig als Sodom en Gomorra;
al een geblakerd stuk hout zijt gij geworden
dat aan de brand ontrukt is,
maar gij hebt u niet tot Mij bekeerd.
“Daarom zal Ik zo met u handelen, Israël.
“En omdat Ik zo met u zal handelen,
moet gij, Israël, u gereedmaken
om voor uw God te verschijnen.”
TUSSENZANG Ps. 5, 5-6, 7, 8
Geleid mij, Heer, langs veilige wegen.
Reeds vroeg in de morgen hoort Gij mijn stem,
reeds vroeg mijn hoop en verlangen.
Gij zijt toch geen God die onrecht verdraagt,
bij U kan geen booswicht vertoeven.
Geen zondaar kan U in de ogen zien,
Gij haat hen die onrecht bedrijven.
Die leugentaal spreken vernietigt Gij,
Gij gruwt van bloeddorst en wreedheid.
Maar ik, door uw rijke genade,
mag binnengaan in uw huis.
Ik werp mij neer voor uw tempel
in eerbied voor U, mijn Heer.

Jezus richtte zich met een dwingend woord
tot de winden en de zee, en het water werd volmaakt stil.
Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Matteüs
Toen Jezus in de boot stapte volgden zijn leerlingen Hem.
Opeens raakte de zee in hevige beroering
zodat de golven over de boot sloegen;
Hij echter lag te slapen.
Zij gingen naar Hem toe
en maakten Hem wakker met de woorden:
“Heer, red ons, wij vergaan!”
Hij sprak tot hen:
“Waarom zijt gij bang, kleingelovigen?”
Dan stond Hij op,
richtte zich met een dwingend woord tot de winden en de zee,
en het water werd volmaakt stil.
De mensen stonden verbaasd en zeiden:
“Wat voor iemand is dat toch,
dat zelfs de winden en de zee Hem gehoorzamen”

CONSIDERATION
A prophet speaks because he must speak from God. That is the solid ground on which he stands, and it is the legitimisation of his speaking as a prophet: I have no choice. God compels me. When do we stand up for others and speak in God’s name? Jesus teaches us that we need not be afraid of this. We can trust in God – no matter how extreme the situation is. Do I dare to do that?
FIRST READING Amos 3, 1-8; 4, 11-12
God the Lord has spoken: who would not prophesy?
From the Prophet Amos
Hear the word
that the Lord speaks
upon you, the sons of Israel,
to all the generation
that He has led out of Egypt:
“You alone have I chosen
among all the nations of the earth;
therefore I also call you to account
for all your iniquities!
“Do two people ever set out together on a journey
without having found each other?
“Does a lion ever roar in the forest
without his having found a prey?
“Or does a lion cub roar in its den
without it having got hold of anything?
“Does a bird shoot down to the snapper on the ground
without there being any bait?
“Or does the snap from the ground
without anything having been caught?
“Is the trumpet blown in a city
without its inhabitants trembling?
“Does disaster ever strike in a city
without the Lord having a hand in it?
“Likewise, God the Lord never does anything
without revealing his decision
to His servants the prophets.
“The lion has roared:
Who would not fear?
“God the Lord has spoken
who would not prophesy?”

Jesus spoke a compelling word
to the winds and to the sea, and the waters became perfectly still.

When Jesus got into the boat, his disciples followed him.
Suddenly the sea got into a violent commotion
so that the waves crashed over the boat;
but He was asleep.
They went to him and woke him up with the words:
“Lord, save us, we are perishing!”
He spoke to them:
“Why are ye afraid, little ones?”
Then He arose,
addressed the winds and the sea with a commanding word,
and the water became perfectly still.
The people stood amazed and said:
“What kind of person is this,
that even the winds and the sea obey Him”.

96. Jesus makes the biblical belief in God the Creator his own and emphasises a fundamental fact: God is Father. 1 In his dialogues with his disciples, Jesus invited them to acknowledge the fatherly relationship God has with all his creatures, reminding them with moving tenderness how each of those creatures is important in his eyes: “Can one not buy five sparrows for two nickels? Yet God does not forget any of them” (Lk 12:6) . “Look at the birds of the air: they do not sow or mow or gather into barns, but your heavenly Father feeds them” (Lk 12:6).
