Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Wat zich de laatste tijd wereldwijd afspeelt,
plaatst ons op een bijzonder confronterende manier
voor de relativiteit van al wat we dachten verworven te hebben.
Of het nu materiële rijkdom is of het aanzien waar we zo hard voor werkten:
Veel kan erg snel veranderen.
Onze zekerheden blijven wankel.
De lezingen van vandaag herinneren ons daaraan,
niet om ons nog meer te laten vertwijfelen.
Nee, ze willen ons een belangrijk contrast tonen:
ze spreken over hoe we nieuw mens kunnen worden, naar het beeld van Jezus,
en hoe we op die manier kunnen gaan leven vanuit de overvloed die God is.
Een rijkdom die ons door niets of niemand kan worden ontnomen.
EERSTE LEZING Pred. 1,2;2,21-23
Wat heeft de mens aan al zijn geploeter?
IJdelheid der ijdelheden, zegt Prediker,
ijdelheid der ijdelheden, en alles is ijdelheid!
Er zijn mensen die zich aftobben en inspannen
met wijsheid en kennis van zaken,
maar wat ze verdienen, moeten ze afgeven aan anderen,
die zich niet inspanden.
Ook dat is ijdelheid en grote onbillijkheid.
Wat heeft een mens tenslotte aan al zijn geploeter,
en aan de zorgen waarmee hij zich op aarde kwelt?
Alle dagen bereiden hem leed, en ergernis is zijn loon;
zelfs ’s nachts vindt hij geen rust;
ook dat is ijdelheid.

Gij, Heer, zijt steeds onze toevlucht
Wat sterfelijk is vergaat weer tot stof,
Gij zegt: “Keer terug, kind van Adam!”
Voor U zijn duizend jaren één dag,
als gisteren dat al voorbij is,
een uur van slaap in de nacht.
Ons leven breekt af als een droom in de ochtend,
kortstondig is het als gras op het veld.
Des morgens ontkiemt het en schiet op,
des avonds is het verwelkt.
Leer ons onze dagen naar waarde te schatten
en zo te komen tot wijsheid van hart.
Uw luister, Heer God, moge over ons stralen,
bestuur onze handen bij al wat zij doen.
Zoekt wat boven is, daar waar Christus zetelt.
Broeders en zusters,
Als gij met Christus ten leven zijt gewekt
zoekt wat boven is,
daar waar Christus zetelt aan de rechterhand Gods.
Zint op het hemelse, niet op het aardse.
Gij zijt immers gestorven
en uw leven is nu met Christus verborgen in God.
Christus is uw leven,
en wanneer Hij verschijnt
zult ook gij met Hem verschijnen in heerlijkheid.
Maakt dus radicaal een einde aan immorele praktijken,
ontucht, onzedelijkheid, hartstocht, begeerlijkheid
en de hebzucht die gelijk staat met afgoderij.
En beliegt elkaar niet meer.
Gij hebt de oude mens met zijn gedragingen afgelegd
en u bekleed met de nieuwe mens,
die op weg is naar het ware inzicht,
terwijl hij zich vernieuwt naar het beeld van zijn Schepper.
Dan is er geen sprake meer van Griek of Jood;
besnedene of onbesnedene,
barbaar of Skyth,
van slaaf of vrije mens.
Dáár is alleen Christus,
alles in allen.

Zalig de armen van geest
want hun behoort het Rijk der hemelen.

En al die voorzieningen die je getroffen hebt, voor wie zijn die dan?
“Meester, zeg aan mijn broer dat hij de erfenis met mij deelt.”
Maar Jezus antwoordde hem:
“Man, wie heeft mij tot rechter of verdeler over u aangesteld?”
En Hij sprak tot hem:
“Pas op en wacht u voor alle hebzucht!
Want geen enkel bezit, – al is het nog zo overvloedig –
kan uw leven veilig stellen.”
Hij vertelde hun de volgende gelijkenis:
“Het land van een rijk man had een grote oogst opgeleverd.
Daarom overlegde deze bij zichzelf:
Wat moet ik doen?
Ik heb geen ruimte om mijn oogst te bergen.
En hij zei:
Dit ga ik doen:
ik breek mijn schuren af en bouw grotere:
Daarin zal ik dan heel mijn rijkdom aan koren opbergen.
Dan zal ik tot mijzelf zeggen:
Man, je hebt een grote rijkdom liggen, voor lange jaren;
rust nu uit,
eet en drink en geniet ervan!
Maar God sprak tot hem:
Dwaas!
Nog deze nacht komt men je leven van je opeisen;
en al die voorzieningen die je getroffen hebt,
voor wie zijn die dan?
Zo gaat het met iemand die schatten vergaart voor zichzelf,
maar niet rijk is bij God.”

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijke huis
129. Wil het mogelijk blijven werk te bieden, dan is het onontbeerlijk een economie te bevorderen die een diversificatie van productie en creativiteit van ondernemen begunstigt. Er is bijvoorbeeld een grote verscheidenheid aan landbouwsystemen voor voedsel op kleine schaal, die het merendeel van de wereldbevolking blijft voeden, waarbij een beperkt gedeelte van het gebied en het water wordt gebruikt en minder afval wordt geproduceerd, hetzij op kleine stukjes bouwland en in moestuinen, als bij de jacht en de bosbouw, hetzij bij de visserij. De schaaleconomieën dwingen vooral in de agrarische sector de kleine boeren hun land te verkopen of van hun traditionele culturen af te stappen. Pogingen van enkelen van hen om andere, meer gediversifieerde vormen van productie te ontwikkelen blijken nutteloos op grond van de moeilijkheid om toegang te krijgen tot de regionale of wereldmarkten of omdat de infrastructuur van verkoop en vervoer ten dienste staat van de grote ondernemingen. De autoriteiten hebben het recht en de verantwoordelijkheid maatregelen te nemen die een duidelijke en krachtige steun zijn voor de kleine producenten en de diversificatie van de productie. Voor een economische vrijheid waarvan allen werkelijk profijt hebben, kan het soms noodzakelijk zijn degenen die de meeste middelen en financiële macht bezitten, grenzen te stellen. Het eenvoudig verkondigen van economische vrijheid, wanneer echter de werkelijke omstandigheden het verhinderen dat velen er in werkelijkheid toegang toe hebben, en de toegang tot werk wordt verminderd, wordt een tegenstrijdig verhaal dat de politiek geen eer aandoet. De activiteit van ondernemer, die een nobele roeping is, gericht op welvaart en de verbetering van de wereld voor allen, kan een zeer vruchtbare methode zijn om de streek waarin de activiteiten plaatsvinden, een impuls te geven, vooral als men begrijpt dat het scheppen van arbeidsplaatsen een onontbeerlijk onderdeel is van de dienst aan het algemeen welzijn.

Opening words
What has been going on around the world recently
confronts us in a particularly confrontational way
the relativity of all that we think we have acquired.
Whether it is material wealth or the prestige for which we worked so hard:
Much can change very quickly.
Our certainties remain shaky.
Today’s readings remind us of this,
not to make us despair even more.
No, they want to show us an important contrast:
They talk about how we can become new people, in the image of Jesus,
and how we can thus start living from the abundance that is God.
A wealth that nothing and no one can take away from us.
FIRST READING Ecclesiastes 1,2;2,21-23
What is the use of all man’s toil?
From the book of Ecclesiastes
Vanity of vanities, says Ecclesiastes,
vanity of vanities, and all is vanity!
There are those who labor and labor
with wisdom and knowledge,
but what they earn, they have to give away to others,
who don’t make an effort.
That too is vanity and a great injustice.
What is the use of all one’s toil in the end?
And the cares with which he tortures himself on earth?
Every day he is made to suffer, and vexation is his reward;
even at night he finds no rest;

“Master, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.”
But Jesus answered him:
“Man, who has appointed me judge or divider over you?”
And He spoke to him:
“Beware and guard against all greed!
For no possession, however plentiful it may be, can secure your life.”
He told them the following parable:
“The land of a rich man had yielded a large harvest.
So he thought to himself:
What shall I do?
I have no room to store my harvest.
And he said:
This is what I will do:
I will break down my barns and build larger ones:
In them I will store all my wealth of corn.
Then I will say to myself:
Man, you have laid up great wealth for many years;
now rest,
eat and drink and enjoy!
But God spoke to him:
Fool!
This very night they will come and claim your life;
and all these provisions you have made,
for whom are they then?
Such is the case with one who hoards up treasures for himself,
but is not rich with God.

On Care of the Common Home
129. If it is to remain possible to provide employment, it is indispensable to promote an economy which favours diversification of production and creativity of enterprise. There is, for example, a wide variety of small-scale food farming systems that continue to feed most of the world’s population, using a limited amount of land and water and producing less waste, whether on small plots of land and in kitchen gardens, or in hunting and forestry, or in fishing. The economies of scale are forcing small farmers, especially in the agricultural sector, to sell their land or abandon their traditional cultures. Attempts by some of them to develop other, more diversified forms of production prove futile because of the difficulty of gaining access to regional or world markets or because the infrastructure of sales and transport is at the service of big business. The authorities have the right and the responsibility to adopt measures that will provide clear and strong support for small producers and the diversification of production. For economic freedom to be of real benefit to all, it may sometimes be necessary to impose limits on those who have the most resources and financial power. Simply proclaiming economic freedom when, however, the real conditions prevent many from having access to it and access to work is reduced becomes a contradictory narrative that does not do justice to politics. Entrepreneurial activity, which is a noble vocation, aimed at prosperity and the betterment of the world for all, can be a very fruitful method of boosting the region in which it takes place, especially if one understands that job creation is an indispensable part of the service to the common good.
