Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Paulus spreekt voortdurend over de Geest en over het ‘vlees’. Deze uitdrukking is voor moderne gelovigen vrij onverstaanbaar. Men vertaalt ‘vlees’ dan ook terecht door verschillende andere woorden; hier bijvoorbeeld door ‘zelfzucht’, in de nieuwe vertaling door ‘zondig leven’. Ze geven perfect weer wat Paulus bedoelt: Het menselijk egoïsme. Maar hoe schitterend spreekt Paulus over de vruchten van de Geest: Dit heeft niets meer met de wet te maken, maar met het opbloeien van allen die deel uitmaken van de christelijke gemeenschap.
EERSTE LEZING Gal. 5, 18-25
Zij die bij Christus Jezus horen, hebben hun zelfzucht
gekruisigd, met haar hartstochten en begeerten.
Uit de brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de Galaten
Broeders en zusters,
Als ge u door de Geest laat leiden,
staat ge niet onder de wet.
De uitingen van zelfzucht zijn bekend genoeg :
Ontucht, onreinheid en losbandigheid,
afgoderij en toverij,
haat, tweespalt, afgunst, driftbuien en intriges,
ruzies,
partijschappen en jaloersheden,
drinkgelagen, uitspattingen en zo meer.
Ik waarschuw u zoals ik u al eerder gewaarschuwd heb :
Wie zich zo mishagen
zullen het koninkrijk van God nooit erven.
De vrucht van de Geest daarentegen
is liefde, vreugde, vrede, geduld,
vriendelijkheid, goedheid, trouw, zachtheid en ingetogenheid.
Met zulke dingen heeft geen wet iets te maken.
En zij die bij Christus Jezus horen,
hebben hun zelfzucht gekruisigd
met haar hartstochten en begeerten.
Daar wij leven door de Geest,
willen we ook leven volgens de Geest.
TUSSENZANG Ps. 1, 1-2, 3, 4, 6
Wie U volgt, Heer
zal het levenslicht bezitten
(cf. Joh. 8, 12).
Gelukkig de man die weigert te doen
wat goddelozen hem raden ;
die niet de wegen der zondaars gaat,
niet zit te midden der spotters ;
maar die zijn geluk vindt in ‘s Heren wet,
haar dag en nacht overweegt.
Hij is als een boom, aan het water geplant,
die vruchten draagt op zijn tijd ;
des zomers verdorren zijn bladeren niet,
maar al wat hij doet brengt hem voorspoed.
De goddelozen vergaat het zo niet :
De wind blaast hen weg als kaf.
De Heer immers let op de weg der gerechten,
de weg van de zondaars loopt dood.

De God van onze Heer Jezus Christus
moge ons innerlijk oog verlichten,
om te zien, hoe groot de hoop is
waartoe Hij ons roept.

In die tijd zei Jezus :
“Wee u, Farizeeën !
“Gij betaalt wel tienden van munt en wijnruit en allerlei kruiden,
maar bekommert u niet om rechtvaardigheid en liefde tot God.
“Het ene moet men doen en het andere niet verwaarlozen.
“Wee u, Farizeeën !
“Gij zijt belust op de voornaamste zetel in de synagoge
en op de begroetingen op de markt.
“Wee u !
“Gij zijt gelijk aan onzichtbare graven,
waar de mensen overheen wandelen zonder het te weten.”
Hier nam een van de wetgeleerden het woord en zei tot Hem :
“Meester, door zo te spreken beledigt Ge ook ons.”
Hij antwoordde echter :
“Wee ook u, wetgeleerden !
“Gij legt de mensen haast ondraaglijke lasten op
die ge zelf niet met één van uw vingers aanraakt.”

Invitation
May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Consideration
Paul speaks constantly of the Spirit and of the ‘flesh’. This expression is quite unintelligible to modern believers. People therefore rightly translate ‘flesh’ by various other words; here, for example, by ‘selfishness’, in the new translation by ‘sinful life’. They perfectly capture what Paul means: human selfishness. But how brilliantly Paul speaks of the fruits of the Spirit: this no longer has anything to do with the law, but with the flourishing of all who are part of the Christian community.
FIRST READING Gal. 5, 18-25
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their selfishness ,
with its passions and lusts.
From the holy apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians
Brothers and sisters,
If thou art led by the Spirit,
you are not under the law.
The manifestations of selfishness are familiar enough :
Fornication, uncleanness and debauchery,
idolatry and witchcraft,
hatred, discord, envy, tantrums and intrigues,
quarrels,
partisanship and jealousies,
drinking bouts, excesses and so on.
I warn you as I have warned you before :
Those who abuse themselves in this way
will never inherit the kingdom of God.
The fruit of the Spirit, on the other hand
is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and modesty.
No law has anything to do with such things.
And those who belong to Christ Jesus,
have crucified their selfishness
with its passions and lusts.
Since we live by the Spirit,
we also want to live according to the Spirit.

He who follows you, Lord
shall possess the light of life
(cf. John 8, 12).
Happy the man who refuses to do
what wicked men advise him ;
who does not go the ways of sinners,
does not sit among mockers;

which bears fruit in its time;
in summer his leaves do not wither,
but all that he does brings him prosperity.

“Woe to you, Pharisees !
“Ye do pay tithes of mint and rue and all kinds of herbs ,
but care not for justice and love of God.
“One must do the one and not neglect the other.
“Woe to you, Pharisees!
“Thou art eager for the chief seat in the synagogue
and greetings in the marketplace.
“Woe unto you !
“Thou art like invisible graves ,
over which men walk without knowing it.”
Here one of the law scholars took the floor and said to Him :
“Master, by so speaking Thou also offendst us.”
However, He replied :
“Woe to you too, lawgivers!
“You impose almost unbearable burdens on men
which thou thyself dost not touch with one of thy fingers.”

202. In many things the course needs to be redetermined, but before all else this applies to humanity, which is in need of change. It lacks the awareness of a common origin, a belonging to each other and a future shared by all. This basic awareness should enable the development of new beliefs, new behaviours and lifestyles. Thus a great cultural, spiritual and educational challenge is emerging that will involve long regeneration processes.
