Als iemand mijn stem hoort en de deur opent zal Ik bij hem binnenkomen en Ik zal maaltijd met hem houden.

Ik, Johannes, hoorde een stem die sprak :
“Schrijf aan de engel van de kerk te Sardes :
Zo spreekt Hij
die de zeven geesten Gods en de zeven sterren heeft :
Ik ken uw daden :
Gij hebt de naam dat gij leeft maar gij zijt dood.
“Word wakker,
herstel wat u rest aan leven en dreigt te sterven.
“Geen van uw daden heb Ik volwaardig bevonden
voor het oog van mijn God.
“Denk aan het woord dat gij ontvangen en gehoord hebt ;
bewaar het en kom tot inkeer.
“Als gij niet ontwaakt zal Ik komen als een dief,
en gij weet niet op welk uur Ik u zal verrassen.
“Maar gij hebt er enkelen in Sardes
die hun kleren niet hebben bezoedeld.
“Die zullen Mij geleiden in witte gewaden
want zij hebben het verdiend.
“Wie overwint zal aldus in het wit gekleed gaan.
“En Ik zal zijn naam niet uitwissen uit het boek des levens
maar zijn naam belijden voor mijn Vader en voor zijn engelen.
“Wie oren heeft, hore wat de Geest tot de kerken zegt.
“En schrijf aan de engel van de kerk te Laodicéa :
Zo spreekt ‘Amen’
de getrouwe en waarachtige getuige,
de oorsprong van de schepping Gods :
Ik ken uw daden :
Gij zijt noch koud noch heet !
“Waart gij maar koud of heet!
“Omdat gij lauw zijt en noch heet noch koud,
daarom zal Ik u uitbraken uit mijn mond.
“Gij zegt : Ik ben rijk
want ik heb mij verrijkt en heb aan niets gebrek
en gij beseft niet dat gij meer dan allen,
ellendig zijt en erbarmelijk,
een blinde en naakte bedelaar.
“Volg mijn raad
en koop van Mij goud, in vuur gelouterd,
om rijk te worden,
en witte kleren om u te bekleden
en om de schande van uw naaktheid te bedekken,
en zalf om op uw ogen te strijken zodat gij weer ziet.
“Wie Ik liefheb, die bestraf en tuchtig Ik.
“Welaan, wees edelmoedig, kom tot inkeer !
“Ik sta voor de deur en Ik klop.
“Als iemand mijn stem hoort en de deur opent
zal Ik bij hem binnenkomen
en Ik zal maaltijd met hem houden en hij met Mij.
“Wie overwint, hem zal Ik naast Mij plaatsen op mijn troon,
zoals Ik zelf heb overwonnen
en met mijn Vader zetel op zijn troon.
“Wie oren heeft, hore wat de Geest tot de kerken zegt.”

TUSSENZANG                    Ps. 14, 2-3ab, 3cd-4ab, 5

Wie overwint,
hem zal Ik naast Mij plaatsen op mijn troon.
(Apok, 3, 21).

Wie rechtvaardig is en eerbaar leeft,
in zijn hart geen boze plannen koestert,
geen bedrog pleegt met zijn tong ;

Wie zijn evenmens geen schade doet
 en zijn buren niet te schande zet ;
wie de boosdoener veracht,
maar de dienaars van de Heer in ere houdt ;

Zijn bezit niet uitleent tegen woeker,
als getuige niet omkoopbaar is.
Wie zich zo gedraagt
zal niet wankelen in eeuwigheid.

Uw voorschriften, Heer, zijn betrouwbaar,
onwetenden maken zij wijs.

De Mensenzoon is gekomen om te zoeken,
en om te redden wat verloren was.

Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens Lucas

In die tijd ging Jezus Jericho binnen.
Terwijl Hij er doorheen trok,
poogde een zekere Zacheüs,
hoofdambtenaar bij het tolwezen en een rijk man,
te zien wie Jezus was.
Maar hij slaagde daarin niet vanwege de menigte,
want hij was klein van gestalte.
Om Hem toch te zien liep hij hard vooruit
en klom in een wilde vijgenboom
omdat Jezus daar langs zou komen.
Toen Jezus bij die plaats kwam
keek Hij omhoog en zei tot hem:
“Zacheüs, kom vlug naar beneden,
want vandaag moet Ik in uw huis te gast zijn.”
Zacheüs kwam snel naar beneden en ontving Hem vol blijdschap.
Allen zagen dat en merkten morrend op:
“Hij is bij een zondaar zijn intrek gaan nemen!”
Maar Zacheüs trad op de Heer toe en sprak:
“Heer, bij deze schenk ik de helft van mijn bezit aan de armen;
en als ik iemand iets afgeperst heb
geef ik het hem vierdubbel terug.”
Jezus sprak tot hem:
“Vandaag is dit huis heil ten deel gevallen,
want ook deze man is een zoon van Abraham.
De Mensenzoon is immers gekomen om te zoeken,
en om te redden wat verloren was.”

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijk huis

236. In de Eucharistie vindt de schepping haar grootste verheffing. De genade die ertoe neigt zich voelbaar te manifesteren, bereikt een wonderbaarlijke uitdrukking, wanneer God zelf, mens geworden, zover gaat dat Hij zich door zijn schepsel laat eten. De Heer wilde op het toppunt van het mysterie van de menswording ons binnenste bereiken door een stuk materie. Niet van bovenaf, maar van binnenuit, opdat wij in onze wereld zelf Hem konden ontmoeten. In de Eucharistie wordt de volheid reeds verwezenlijkt en ligt het vitale middelpunt van het heelal, het middelpunt dat overstroomt van liefde en onuitputtelijk leven. Verenigd met de mensgeworden Zoon, die tegenwoordig is in de Eucharistie, brengt heel de kosmos dank aan God. De eucharistie is inderdaad op zich een daad van kosmische liefde: “Ja. kosmisch! Want zelfs als de Eucharistie wordt gevierd aan het nederige altaar van een plattelandskerkje, dan wordt zij in zekere zin altijd nog gevierd op het altaar van de wereld”. De Eucharistie verenigt hemel en aarde, omarmt en doordringt heel de schepping. De wereld, die uit Gods handen is gekomen, keert in vreugdevolle en volledige aanbidding naar Hem terug: in het eucharistisch Brood “is de schepping gericht op de vergoddelijking, de heilige bruiloft, de eenmaking met de Schepper zelf”.  Daarom is de Eucharistie ook een bron van licht en motivatie voor onze zorgen omtrent het milieu en geeft ons richting om bewakers van heel de schepping te zijn.

the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Consideration

The author clearly speaks with the authority of a prophet. The seven letters have a prophetic accent. Each letter ends with the same warning: He who has ears must hear what the spirit says to the community. This is a call to repentance. This call is very specific, e.g. yesterday: ‘Repent and behave as before’ and today ‘repent’, twice . The end of the reading is remarkable and has had a major impact in spirituality: ‘I stand at the door and knock’. That call has enduring topicality.

 

FIRST READING        Apok. 3, 1-6.14-22

If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will enter with him and I will have meal with him.

From the Revelation of the holy apostle John

I, John, heard a voice speaking :
“Write to the angel of the church at Sardes :
Thus speaks He
Who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars :
I know thy deeds :
Ye have the name that ye live but ye are dead.
“Awake,
restore what is left of thy life and threaten to die.
“None of thy deeds have I found worthy
before the eye of my God.
“Remember the word which thou hast received and heard ;
keep it and come to repentance.
“If ye awake not, I will come like a thief ,
and ye know not at what hour I will surprise you.
“But ye have some in Sardes
who have not defiled their garments.
“These shall lead Me in white robes
For they have earned it.
“He who overcomes shall thus be clothed in white.
“And I will not blot out his name from the book of life
but confess his name before my Father and before his angels.

He who behaves in this way

GOSPEL             Lk. 19, 1-10

The Son of Man has come to seek,
and to save what was lost.

At that time, Jesus entered Jericho,
as He passed through it,
attempted a certain Zacchaeus,
chief toll collector and a rich man,
to see who Jesus was.
But he did not succeed because of the crowd,
for he was small in stature.
To see Him anyway, he walked fast ahead
and climbed a wild fig tree
because Jesus would pass by there.
When Jesus came to that place
He looked up and said to him:
“Zacchaeus, come down quickly,
for today I must be a guest in your house.”
Zacchaeus came down quickly and received Him full of joy.
All saw this and noted morosely:
“He has gone to take up residence with a sinner!”
But Zacchaeus stepped up to the Lord and spoke:
“Lord, by this I donate half my property to the poor ;
and if I have extorted anything from anyone
I will give it back to him fourfold.”
Jesus spoke to him:
“Today salvation has come to this house ,
for this man too is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of Man has come to seek ,
and to save what was lost.”

On caring for the common home

236. In the Eucharist, creation finds its greatest exaltation. The grace that tends to manifest itself palpably reaches a miraculous expression, when God himself, having become man, goes so far as to allow himself to be eaten by his creature. At the height of the mystery of the Incarnation, the Lord wanted to reach our innermost being through a piece of matter. Not from above, but from within, so that we could meet Him in our world itself. In the Eucharist, the fullness is already realised and lies the vital centre of the universe, the centre overflowing with love and inexhaustible life. United with the incarnate Son, who is present in the Eucharist, all the cosmos gives thanks to God. Indeed, the Eucharist is itself an act of cosmic love: “Yes. cosmic! For even if the Eucharist is celebrated at the humble altar of a country church, in a sense it is always celebrated at the altar of the world.”  The Eucharist unites heaven and earth, embraces and permeates all creation. The world, having come out of God’s hands, returns to Him in joyful and full adoration: in the Eucharistic Bread “creation is directed towards deification, the holy wedding, unification with the Creator Himself”. Therefore, the Eucharist is also a source of light and motivation for our environmental concerns and gives us direction to be guardians of all creation.
