Uitnodiging
Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Een stronk is alles wat overblijft van een omgehakte boom. Er zit weinig toekomst in. Het beeld kan voor zovele zaken symbool staan, o.a. voor het verval of de ondergang van de dynastie. Toch schiet er onverwacht een twijgje op. Een vorst uit de toekomst zal niet met militaire macht regeren. Zijn aandacht gaat uit naar kleinen en geringen. Zijn grote zorg is recht en rechtvaardigheid. Wat is er meer nodig om aan Jezus, de Messias, te denken, zoon van David maar tegelijk vredevorst als Salomo?
EERSTE LEZING Jes. 11, 1-10
De geest van de Heer zal op hem rusten.
Uit de Profeet Jesaja
In die dagen zal een twijg ontspruiten
aan de stronk van Isaï,
een scheut aan zijn wortels zal vruchten dragen.
De geest van de Heer zal op hem rusten,
de geest van wijsheid en verstand,
de geest van raad en heldenmoed,
de geest van liefde en vreze des Heren,
en hij zal uitstralen deze vreze des Heren.
Hij zal geen oordeel vellen naar uiterlijke schijn,
geen uitspraak doen op basis van geruchten.
De kleine luiden zal hij recht verschaffen,
een eerlijk vonnis spreken over de geringsten der aarde,
maar de uitbuiter
zal hij striemen met de gesel van zijn mond,
de boosdoener doden
met de adem van zijn lippen.
De rechtvaardigheid zal hem dienen tot gordel om het middel,
de onkreukbaarheid tot band om de lenden.
Dan huist de wolf bij het lam,
vlijt de panter zich neer naast het geitje,
grazen te samen het kalf en het leeuwenjong,
een kleuter kan ze weiden !
Koe en berin hebben vriendschap gesloten,
hun jongen liggen naast elkaar,
en de leeuw vreet hooi met het rund.
De zuigeling speelt bij het hol van de adder,
en het kleine kind steekt zijn handje in het nest van de slang !
Dan zondigt niemand meer, doet niemand meer kwaad
op heel mijn heilige berg,
maar zal de gehele aarde vervuld zijn met liefde tot God,
zoals de zeebodem bedolven is onder het water.
Op die dag zal de wortel van Isaï
opgericht staan als banier voor de volken :
Alle naties zullen naar hem toestromen.
En zijn troon zal luisterrijk zijn!
TUSSENZANG Ps. 72(71), 2, 7-8, 12-13, 17
Rechtvaardigheid zal in zijn dagen ontbloeien,
en welvaart alom tot het einde der maanden.
Mijn God, verleen de koning uw wijsheid,
de koningszoon uw rechtvaardigheid.
Hij moge uw volk rechtvaardig besturen,
uw armen met billijkheid.
Rechtvaardigheid zal in zijn dagen ontbloeien,
en welvaart alom tot het einde der maanden.
Regeren zal hij van zee tot zee,
vanaf de Rivier tot de grens van de aarde.
De arme die steun vraagt zal hij bevrijden,
de ongelukkige zonder hulp.
Hij zal zich ontfermen over misdeelden,
de zwakken schenkt hij weer levensmoed.
Voor eeuwig blijve zijn naam geprezen,
in ere zolang als er dagen zijn.
Zijn naam zij een zegen voor alle stammen,
bij alle volken met lof vermeld.

Vervuld van de heilige Geest jubelde Jezus het uit.
Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Lucas
In die tijd jubelde Jezus het uit, vervuld van de heilige Geest,
en Hij sprak :
“Ik prijs U Vader, Heer van hemel en aarde,
omdat Gij deze dingen verborgen gehouden hebt
voor wijzen en verstandigen,
maar ze hebt geopenbaard aan kinderen.
“Ja Vader,
zo heeft het U behaagd.
“Alles is Mij door mijn Vader in handen gegeven.
“Niemand weet wie de Zoon is tenzij de Vader ;
en wie de Vader is tenzij de Zoon
en aan wie de Zoon Hem wil openbaren.”
Daarop keerde Hij zich naar zijn leerlingen afzonderlijk
en Hij zei tot hen :
“Gelukkig de ogen die zien wat gij ziet.
“Ik zeg u :
Vele profeten en koningen verlangden te zien wat gij ziet
maar zij hebben het niet gezien ;
en te horen wat gij hoort
maar ze hebben het niet gehoord.”

Acht jaar na Pacem in Terris verwees de zalige Paus Paulus VI in 1971 naar de ecologische problematiek en presenteerde deze als een crisis die “een dramatisch gevolg” is van de ongecontroleerde activiteit van de mens: “Door een onbezonnen exploitatie van de natuur dreigt hij haar te verwoesten en op zijn beurt slachtoffer van een zodanig verval te worden”. Hij sprak ook tot de FAO over de mogelijkheid “van een ware ecologische ramp als gevolg van de terugslag van de industriële beschaving”, daarbij “de urgentie en de noodzaak” onderstrepend “van een radicale verandering in het gedrag van de mensheid”, omdat “de meest bijzondere wetenschappelijke vooruitgang, de meest verbluffende technische huzarenstukjes, de meest wonderbaarlijke economische groei, als deze niet gepaard gaan met een authentieke maatschappelijke en morele vooruitgang, zich uiteindelijk tegen de mens keren”.

Invitation
May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.
Available every morning from 7 a.m.
Consideration
A stump is all that remains of a felled tree. There is little future in it. The image can symbolise so many things, including the decline or demise of dynasty. Yet a twig shoots up unexpectedly. A monarch of the future will not rule with military might. His focus is on the small and the small. His great concern is law and justice. What more is needed to think of Jesus, the Messiah, son of David but at the same time prince of peace like Solomon?
FIRST READING Isa 11:1-10
The spirit of the Lord will rest on him.
From the Prophet Isaiah
In those days a twig will sprout
from the stump of Isaiah,
a shoot from his roots will bear fruit.
The spirit of the Lord will rest upon him,
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and valour,
the spirit of love and fear of the Lord,
and he shall radiate this fear of the Lord.
He will not pass judgment according to outward appearances,
make no judgment on the basis of hearsay.
The little folks he will administer justice,
pass fair judgment on the least of these,
but the exploiter
he will scourge with the scourge of his mouth,
slay the evildoer
with the breath of his lips.
Righteousness will serve him as a girdle around the waist,
incorruptibility a belt around the loins.
Then the wolf dwells with the lamb,
the panther perches next to the kid,
the calf and the lion cub graze together,
a toddler can graze them!
Cow and bear have made friendship,
their young lie side by side,
and the lion eats hay with the cow.
The infant plays by the viper’s den,
and the little child puts its hand in the snake’s nest !
Then no one sins any more, no one does evil any more
in all my holy mountain,
but the whole earth will be filled with love for God,
as the seabed is buried under the water.
In that day the root of Isaiah
will stand erect as a banner to the nations :
all nations will flock to him.
And his throne will be glorious!

Righteousness will blossom in his days,
and prosperity everywhere till the end of the months.

Eight years after Pacem in Terris, Blessed Pope Paul VI referred to the ecological problem in 1971, presenting it as a crisis that is “a dramatic consequence” of man’s uncontrolled activity: “Through a rash exploitation of nature, he risks destroying it and in turn becoming a victim of such decay”. He also spoke to the FAO about the possibility “of a true ecological disaster resulting from the setback of industrial civilisation”, underlining “the urgency and necessity” “of a radical change in the behaviour of humanity”, because “the most extraordinary scientific advances, the most astounding technical feats, the most prodigious economic growth, if they are not accompanied by authentic social and moral progress, ultimately turn against man”.
