Consideration
The designation of Mary as Mother of the Church is ancient. Augustine wrote that Mary is the mother of the members of the Church because she helped give birth to the faithful in the Church through her love. Pope Leo the Great proclaimed that the birth of the Head is also the birth of the Body. He also designated Mary as the mother of Christ, the Son of God, and as the mother of the members of the Mystical Body, i.e. the Church.
FIRST READING Gen. 3, 9-15,20
I will establish enmity between you and the woman
between your offspring and her offspring.
From the book of Genesis
After Adam had eaten from the tree
God the Lord called the man and asked him:
“Where are you?”
He replied:
“I heard your thunder in the garden ,
and then I became afraid, for I am naked ;
and I hid myself.
But the Lord God said:
“Who told you that you are naked?
“Have you ever eaten from the tree
which I have forbidden you?
The man replied:
“The woman you gave me as a companion ,
she gave me from that tree
and so I ate.
Then the Lord God asked the woman:
“How could you do that?”
The woman replied:
“The serpent tempted me ,
and I ate”.
The Lord God then said to the serpent:
“Because you did this
you are cursed among all domestic animals
and among all wild animals.
“On your belly you shall crawl and eat dust all the days of your life,
all the days of your life.
“I will put enmity between you and the woman,
between your offspring and her offspring.
“She will threaten your head
and you her heel!”
The man called his wife Eve,
because she became the mother of all living.
Interludium Ps. 98(97), 1, 2-3ab, 3c-4
Sing to the Lord a new song
For he has done wonderful things
Sing to the Lord a new song
For he has done wondrous things.
His hand is mightily established,
The power of his holy arm.
His benefits he has made known to us,
His justice to the nations.
Again His goodness and faithfulness
on behalf of the house of Israel.
The whole earth saw
what our God has done for us.
Glorify the Lord, all nations,
be glad, rejoice and sing.
GOSPEL Jn 14:15-17
The Spirit of truth will always be with you.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John
At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
“Then, at my prayer, the Father will
give you another Helper to be with you forever.
The Spirit of truth,
to whom the world is not receptive
because it neither sees him nor knows him.
“You know him, for he remains with you and will be in you”.
