Invitation

May I draw your attention to
the daily Gospel reading?

This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
of the gospel. Everyone, without exception
can experience that joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Consideration
Although the atmosphere of the letter of James is very different from that of Paul’s letters, they (along with all the writings in the New Testament) have one thing in common: they show us how those first Christians were people just like us. Again and again, we see how those first generations were flesh-and-blood people; people with gifts and flaws, yes, even major flaws. Today’s reading frightens us: were things so bad back then?

FIRST READING               James 4, 1-10
If you pray, you will not succeed
because you pray badly.

From the letter of the holy apostle James

Brothers and sisters,

where do these quarrels and disputes come from?
Surely only from your own passions
which will not leave you alone?

You desire things you cannot have.
You murder and envy
and you cannot reach your goal.
Then you will struggle and struggle.
You have nothing
Because you don’t pray.
And if you pray
you don’t get it
Because you pray wrongly,
with the intention
To spend what you get for your evil desires.

Unfaithful,
don’t you know that friendship with the world
means enmity with God?
Whoever wants to be a friend of the world
makes himself an enemy of God.
Or do you believe that Scripture says without reason :
“The spirit which He has caused to dwell within us
lusts with envy”?
All the richer is the grace
which He gives us, according to the word of Scripture:
“God resists the proud
but gives grace to the humble”.
So submit to God.
Resist the devil
and he will flee from you.
Draw near to God
and He will draw near to you.
Cleanse your hands, you sinners;
You waverers, cleanse your hearts.
Acknowledge your misery,
Lament and weep.
Let your laughter turn into tears and your joy into sorrow.
Humble yourselves before the Lord
and he will exalt you.

INTERLUDIUM                   Ps 55 (54), 7-8, 9-10a, 10b-11a, 23

Let God take care of you, for he is your support.

Who gives me the wings of a dove,
Then I would fly away and rest.
Then I would surely flee far away from here
And I would stay in the desert.

There I would seek refuge
From the whirlwind and the hurricane.
Scatter them, Lord, and make them discordant.

Violence and discord rule the city.
By day and by night they roam the walls,
and within the city injustice and pressure reign.

Let God take care of you, for He is your support,
He will not let the godly fall.

HALLELUJAH               John 14:5

Alleluia.
I am the way, the truth and the life, says the Lord;
No one comes to the Father but through Me.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL Mk 9:30-37

The Son of Man is betrayed.
Whoever wants to be first
must be the last of all.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark

After the transfiguration on the mountain
Jesus and his disciples went forth from there
and passed through Galilee;
But he did not want anyone to know, for he taught his disciples.
For he taught his disciples.
He said to them:
“The Son of Man has been betrayed into the hands of men
and they will kill him
but three days after his death he will rise”.
They did not understand these words
but they refused to question Him.
They came to Capernaum
and when they were in the house, He questioned them:
“What were you arguing about on the way?
But they remained silent, for they had
quarrelled on the way over the question of
who was the elder.
Then he sat down,
called the twelve and said to them:
“If anyone wants to be first
he must be the last of all
and be the servant of all.
He took a child and put him in their midst;
He embraced him and said to them
“Whoever takes such a child in My Name
takes Me; and whoever takes Me
does not take Me, but Him who sent Me”.
