Monday – Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus, friends of the Lord

Jesus points us to the most important things
in life and that we should not worry about side issues.

Invitation

May I draw your attention to
the daily gospel reading?

This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the gospel.
Everyone, without exception
can experience that joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day

Consideration

If our soul is a house, two women must also live in it. One will throw herself down at the feet of Jesus to listen to his word; the other will feed him. Mary is the sign of resting in Christ, of praying and reading, Martha is the act by which people work for Christ. As long as Christ is poor and walks through the world hungry and thirsty, these two women must take shape in the same person. Action and contemplation can never be separated.
(Adelbert of Rievaux)

FIRST READING               1 Jn 4:7-16
When we love one another, God dwells in us.

From the first letter of the holy apostle John

My friends,
Let us love one another
For love comes from God.
Everyone who loves is a child of God
and knows God.
A person without love does not know God
for God is love.
And the love that is God
has been revealed among us
by sending his only Son into the world,
to bring us life.
This is what love is all about:
We have not loved God
but he loved us
and sent his Son
so that through the sacrifice of his life he could
erase our sins.

My friends,

if God has loved us so much,
then we too must love one another.
No one has ever seen God,
but if we love each other,
God dwells in us,
and His love is perfect in us.
This is proof that we dwell in Him
(as He dwells in us),
that He has made us partakers of His Spirit.
And we have seen and testified
That the Father has sent His Son
to be the Saviour of the world.
If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God ,
God dwells in him and he dwells in God.
Thus we have come to know God’s love for us ,
and we believe in Him.
God is love: he who dwells in love dwells in God and God is with him.
dwells in God and God is with him.

Interludium       Ps 34(33), 2-3, 16-17, 18-19

I will praise the Lord every day.

I will praise the Lord every day,
His praise is always on my lips.
My spirit is proud of the Lord’s favour,
Let all who hear it rejoice.

The eye of the Lord is on the godly,
His ear is on their supplications.
He turns His face away from the wicked,
They are forgotten on earth.

The Lord hears the cries of the godly and rescues them from every need.
And rescues them from every distress.
The Lord is close to the distressed hearts,
He helps those who acknowledge their guilt.

HALLELUYA                cf. Acts 16:14b

Alleluia.
Make our hearts receptive, Lord, and let us turn to the word of God.
And turn us to the word of your Son.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                     Lk. 10, 38-42
Martha, how busy you are with many things.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Luke

In those days Jesus came to a village
where a woman called Martha welcomed him into her home.
She had a sister, Mary, who
– sat at the feet of the Lord
and listened to his words.
Martha was absorbed in the bustle of ministry,
but she joined them for a moment and said:
“Lord, is it indifferent to you
that my sister leaves me to serve alone?
Then tell her to help me.”
The Lord answered her:
“Martha, Martha ,
how much you worry about many things.
“Only one thing is needed.
“Mary has chosen the better part
and it will not be taken away from her.
