Friday – St Francis of Assisi

St Francis was born in 1181 or 1182. He died on 3 October 1226.
Founder of the monastic order of the Franciscans or Friars Minor. Canonised on 16 July 1228.

Invitation

May I draw your attention to
the daily Gospel reading

This invitation wishes to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
of the gospel. Everyone, without exception
can experience that joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Consideration
God intervenes from within the storm. He gives an answer, but no explanation, no solution. The only answer is: ‘I am God. My ways are not your ways’. Job accepts this and remains submissive. Could the Old Testament go beyond this answer? Later, on Calvary, Jesus will match and even surpass Job’s cry. The utterly innocent asks for justice. God will answer on the third day. That is our faith.

FIRST READING               Job 38, 1.12-21 ; 40, 3-5
Have you ever shown the dawn its place?
Or have you ever penetrated the springs of the sea?

From the book of Job

And it happened
the Lord answered Job out of the storm and spoke:
‘Have you ever in your life called the morning,
given the dawn its place
so that it may take hold of the ends of the earth
that the wicked may be shaken?
‘The earth changes its appearance like clay under a seal
And becomes furry like a garment.
‘Then from the wicked their light is taken away,
their uplifted arm broken.
‘Have you ever passed through the springs of the sea
Or have you walked
In the unfathomable depths of the ocean?
‘Have you seen the gates of death?
Have you seen the gates of darkness?
‘Have you thought of the ends of the earth?
‘Say if you know all this!
‘Where is the way to the abode of light,
and the darkness, where has it its place,
‘That you may guide them to their dwelling places,
and lead them by the paths to their homes?
‘Thou knowest surely, for then werest thou born
and the number of thy days is great’.
And Job answered and spoke to the Lord :
‘Behold, I am too insignificant; what can I answer thee?
‘I put my hand before my mouth.
‘Once I have spoken, but I speak no more;
Twice, but I go no further’.

INTERLUDIUM              Ps. 139(138), 1-3, 7-8, 9-10, 13-14

Guide me, O Lord, in tried paths.

You know me, O Lord, and see me go by,
You see me where I go or where I am.
Thou knowest my thoughts from afar,
Thou knowest by which I work or rest.

Where could I escape from Thy Spirit?
Where would I hide from Thy Face?
Though I ascend to heaven, Thou art already there,
Though I descend into the kingdom of the dead, Thou art there.

If I borrow the wings of the dawn
and I settle down beyond the sea:
Even there it is Thy hand that keeps leading me,
Even there Thou dost hold me fast.

You have created what is within me,
You shaped me like a tissue
formed in the womb.
I thank You for the miracle of my life,
for all the wonderful works You have done.

Alleluia               Ps 119(118), 88

Alleluia.
Be merciful to me and let me live, Lord,
then I will be faithful to what You command.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                          Lk. 10, 13-16
Whoever rejects me, rejects the one who sent me.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

At that time Jesus said:
‘Woe to you, O Chorazin, woe to you, O Bethsaida!
‘Tyre and Sidon, long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes, would have been converted,
they would have been converted,
if the miracles had happened to them
that have taken place with you.
‘Yes, the fate of Tyre and Sidon
will be more bearable at the judgment
than yours.
‘And you, Capernaum
Wilt thou sometimes be exalted into heaven?
‘Thou shalt sink to hell.
‘Whoever listens to you listens to Me;
And he that rejecteth thee, rejecteth Me.
‘Whoever rejects Me
Rejects Him who sent Me.

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

CHAPTER TWO
A STRANGER ON THE ROAD

56. The previous chapter should not be read as a cool and detached description of today’s problems, for “the joys and hopes, the grief and anguish of the people of our time, especially of those who are poor or afflicted, are the joys and hopes, the grief and anguish of the followers of Christ as well. Nothing that is genuinely human fails to find an echo in their hearts”.In the attempt to search for a ray of light in the midst of what we are experiencing, and before proposing a few lines of action, I now wish to devote a chapter to a parable told by Jesus Christ two thousand years ago. Although this Letter is addressed to all people of good will, regardless of their religious convictions, the parable is one that any of us can relate to and find challenging.

“Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. ‘Teacher,’ he said, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ He said to him, ‘What is written in the law? What do you read there?’ He answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.’ And he said to him, ‘You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.’ But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbour?’ Jesus replied, ‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.’ Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” He said, ‘The one who showed him mercy.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise.’”(Lk 10:25-37).
