Invitation
May I ask for your attention for
daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation is to share the joy
of the gospel with you. Everyone, without exception,
can experience that joy by opening their heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Consideration
The gospel has the typical Johannine irony and double meaning with the misunderstanding between Jesus and the Jews (verses 52 and 57). Added to this is the depth of the Christological statement: ‘Before Abraham was, I am’. In this gospel, and indeed in the whole of the New Testament, this self-revelation of Jesus cannot be surpassed.
FIRST READING Gen. 17:3-9
You will become the father of a multitude of nations.
From the Book of Genesis
At that time Abram fell to the ground,
and God said to him: ‘This is my covenant with you:
You shall be the father of a multitude of nations.
’You shall no longer be called Abram;
your name shall be Abraham,
for I will make you the father of a multitude of nations.
‘I will make you very fruitful;
I will make nations of you,
and kings will come from you.
’I will establish my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you
for generations to come,
it is an everlasting covenant
I will be your God and the God of your descendants
‘All of Canaan, the land where you now reside as a foreigner,
I will give to you and your descendants
to possess forever,
and I will be their God.‘
God also said to Abraham:
’You, for your part, must keep my covenant,
you and your descendants, generation after generation.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 105 (104), 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
His covenant will stand forever. Rely on God, on his mighty arm,
always seek his face.
Never forget the wonders he has done,
his signs and his promises. You, offspring of his servant Abraham,
you sons of Jacob, his beloved.
The Lord, He is our only God,
what He decides applies to the whole earth.
His covenant remains in force for ever,
what He has promised for a thousand generations.
The bond He made with Abraham in the past,
the oath He once swore to Isaac.
VERSES FOR THE GOSPEL cf. Luke 8:15
Blessed are those who hear the word
and keep it in a good and noble heart
and bear fruit
through their steadfastness.
GOSPEL John 8:51-59
Abraham, your father, rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John
At that time Jesus said to the Jews:
“Truly, truly, I say to you:
If anyone keeps my word
he shall not see death for ever.’
Then the Jews said to him,
‘Now we know that you are possessed by a devil.
’Abraham and the prophets died,
but you claim
that if anyone keeps my word
he will never see death.
“Are you greater than our father Abraham,
who died?
‘Even the prophets died.
‘Before whom do you hold yourself up?’
Jesus answered:
‘If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing;
but it is my Father who glorifies me,
of whom you say,
He is our God.
’Yet you do not know him.
“But I know him
and if I said I did not know him
I would be like you: a liar.
‘But I know him and keep his word.
’Abraham, your father, rejoiced
at the thought of seeing my day:
he saw it and was glad.‘
Then the Jews said to him,
’You are not yet fifty years old
and you saw Abraham?
Jesus replied to them:
‘Truly, truly, I say to you,
before Abraham was, I am.’
So they picked up stones to stone him
but Jesus withdrew and left the temple.

On fraternity and social friendship
The true victory
244. When conflicts are not resolved but hidden
or buried in the past, a silence can arise which makes one an
accomplice in grave misdeeds and sins. True reconciliation does
not shy away from conflict, but is achieved in conflict
by overcoming it through dialogue and open,
sincere and patient negotiation. The struggle between the different
sectors ‘gradually turns into an honest discussion that is
based on the search for justice, when it refrains
from acts of mutual enmity and hatred’.
