Sunday – HH. PETRUS AND PAULUS, ap.

The feast day of the Apostles Peter and Paul is celebrated in both the
Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

OPENING WORD

Jesus chose a tough fisherman from Galilee
and a zealous Christian follower to follow Him.
Even though neither apostle ran a perfect course
and had their own temperaments,
and yet Peter and Paul became the pillars
on which the Church was built.
With fervent zeal, they committed themselves to the Gospel
and followed Jesus to martyrdom.
Let us pray for courage and strength,
so that we too give our lives with zeal and devotion
in the service of the Lord and of the Church.

FIRST READING    Acts 3:1-10

What I have I give you: “In the name of Jesus: Use your feet!”

From the Acts of the Apostles

In those days Peter and John once went to the temple
at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.
There was a man there who had been lame from birth
and was carried to the temple gate every day
called the Beautiful One ,
to sit down there and ask alms
to those who entered the temple.
When he saw Peter and John
who were just about to enter the temple
he asked for alms.
Peter, as well as John looked at him sternly and said :
“Look at us.”
He fixed his gaze on them
expecting to get something from them.
Yet Peter spoke :
“Silver or gold I have not
but what I have I give you.
“In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene :
use your feet!”
He grabbed him by his right hand
and helped him up.
At the same time, strength came into his feet and ankles,
with a leap he stood upright,
began to walk
and went running and jumping with them into the temple
while glorifying God.
All the people saw that he was walking and glorifying God.
They recognised him as the man
who was always begging at the Beautiful Gate of the temple
and they were beside themselves with amazement
at what had happened to him.

RESONSORIAL   Ps. 19(18),2-3, 4-5

Refrain
Over all the earth their cry sounds.

The heavens proclaim God’s glory,
the firmament shows us the work of his hands.
The day calls it to the next day,
the night passes it on to the night.

No word is spoken, no voice echoes,
no sound is heard;
yet all over the earth their call resounds,
their message penetrates to the edge of the world.

SECOND READING         Gal. 1, 11-20
God has chosen me from birth.

From the holy apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians

Brothers and sisters,

I assure you:
the gospel I have proclaimed ,
was not devised by men.
Nor did I receive or learn it from any human being,
but by a revelation from Jesus Christ.
Surely you have heard
how I used to live as a Jew,
how I fiercely persecuted the Church of God
and sought to exterminate her,
and how I led many of my age and my people
in the matter of the Jewish religion
in my passionate zeal
for the lore of ancestry.

But then God decided ,
who had chosen me from birth
and called me by his grace,
decided to reveal His Son to me
that I might proclaim Him among the Gentile nations.

Then I immediately left for Arabia
without consulting a human being.
Nor did I go to Jerusalem,
to those who were apostles before me.
And from Arabia I returned again to Damascus.
Only three years later I went to Jerusalem
to make the acquaintance of Cephas
and I stayed with him for only a fortnight.
Of the other apostles I met no one
except James, the brother of the Lord.
What I write is the pure truth: God is my witness.

Verse for the gospel     John 21, 17d

Alleluia.
Lord, Thou knowest all things;
Thou knowest that I love Thee.
Alleluia

GOSPEL          Jn 21, 15-19
Pasture my lambs, shepherd my sheep.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John

When Jesus had appeared to His disciples ,
after breakfast, He said to Simon Peter :
“Simon, son of John,
do you love Me more than these love Me?”
He replied :
“Yes Lord, Thou knowest that I love Thee.”
Jesus told him :
“Pasture My lambs.”
A second time He said to him :
“Simon, son of John, do you love Me?”
And this one answered :
“Yes Lord, Thou knowest that I love Thee.”
Jesus resumed :
“Shepherd My sheep.”
For the third time He asked :
“Simon, son of John, do you love Me?”
Now Peter was grieved,
because for the third time He asked him :
Do you love Me?” and he said to Him :
“Lord, Thou knowest all things ; Thou knowest that I love Thee.”
Thereupon Jesus told him :
“Pasture My sheep.
“Verily, verily, I say unto thee :
When thou wast young,
thou didst put thy girdle upon thyself and go whithersoever thou wouldest,
but when thou art old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands,
another shall girdle thee and take thee whither thou wilt not.”
With this He alluded to death
through which he would glorify God.
And after these words, He told him :
“Follow Me.”

Laudato Si

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On caring for the common home

36. Caring for ecosystems requires a view beyond the
the short term, because protecting them does not interest anyone
when all one seeks is quick and easy economic gain.
But the cost of the damage caused by selfish carelessness
is many times greater than the economic benefit to be gained. In
the case of the loss or serious damage to some species
we are talking about values beyond any calculation.
Therefore, we can be silent witnesses to very serious injustices,
when one claims to gain important economic benefits
and the rest of present and future humanity for the very
high costs of environmental destruction.
