Consideration

The letter of Hebrews gives important teachings about Jesus as high priest and about the significance of his one-time sacrifice. Later in chapter 10, the great exhortation will begin, an exhortation to faithfulness. Of this we now have a small prelude: Exhortation to patience in difficult situations. And for the O.T. connoisseur who is the author of the letter, Abraham is the obvious example of patience and faith in the promise.

FIRST READING   Heb 6, 10-20

Hope is the secure and firm anchor of our souls.

From the letter to the Hebrews

Brothers and sisters,

God is just ;
He cannot forget
what you have done for love of his name :
All the services which you have rendered and are still rendering to the saints.
But I wish
that each one of you continues to show the same ardent zeal
until your hopes are completely fulfilled.
You must not become lazy,
but you must take an example from those
who, through faith and patience, obtain a share of the promises.
When God made his promise to Abraham
He swore by Himself
since He had no one above Him to swear by:
“I promise that I will bless you
and make your descendants numerous.”
Abraham therefore received what he was promised,
after a long and patient wait.
People swear by a higher power,
and the oath is for them the highest form of affirmation
which must exclude all contradiction.
And so God wanted to vouch for his promise with an oath,
to show the heirs of the promise
even more clearly how unshakably firm his decision was.
God has thus performed two irrevocable acts
that make it impossible for Him to deceive us ;
and to us, refugees, they powerfully urge
us to cling to the hope of salvation.
Hope is the safe and firm anchor of our soul.
It penetrates, within the sanctuary
where Jesus entered for us as forerunner
now that He has become the High Priest forever
in the manner of Melchisédeck.

INTERLUDIUM   Ps. 111(110), 1-2, 4-5, 9, 10c

Always the Lord remembers His covenant.
or : Alleluia.

The Lord I will give thanks from all my heart,
in the midst of the pious, for all the congregation.
Great is all that He performs,
captivating the attention of each one who follows it.

He did miracles never to be forgotten,
loving and kind, the Lord shows Himself.
He gives food to those who worship Him,
always remembering his covenant.

He has brought salvation to his people,
made with them his covenant for ever;
Holy and honored is his Name,
for ever and ever they must praise Him.

ALLELUIA             Ps. 119(118), 27

Alleluia.
Lead me in the way of your commands, Lord,
and I will remember your deeds.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL               Mk. 2, 23-28

The Sabbath was made for man’s sake but not man for the Sabbath’s sake.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark

Once Jesus went through the cornfields on a Sabbath
and His disciples began to pick ears as He went.
The Pharisees said to Him :
“Why do they do on the Sabbath something that is not lawful?”
He answered them :
“Have you never read what David did when he needed something
to eat and he and his companions were hungry?
“How he, under the high priest Abjatar.
entered the house of God
and ate of the bread, which only the priests are allowed to eat,
and how he gave of them also to his companions?”
And He added :
“The Sabbath was made for the benefit of man
but not man for the sake of the Sabbath.
The Son of Man is therefore Lord also of the Sabbath.”

Laudato Si

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On the care of the common home

The weakness of responses

53. This situation cause the moaning of sister earth, which unites with the moaning of the abandoned of the world, with a lament that demands of us a different course. Never have we mistreated and damaged our common home like in the last two centuries. On the contrary, we are called to become instruments of God the Father, so that our planet could be what He dreamed of when He created it, responding to His plan of peace, beauty and fullness. The problem is that we do not yet have the necessary culture to cope with this crisis, and it is necessary to form leaderships that show ways to respond to the needs of current generations, all of them included, without endangering future generations. It becomes necessary to create a system of norms that contains inviolable boundaries and ensures the protection of ecosystems, before the new forms of power derived from the techno-economic paradigm end up destroying not only politics but also freedom and justice.
