Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience this joy by opening his heart
to the healing effect of God’s word.

Available every day.

Consideration

The liturgy juxtaposes the Book of Wisdom, Psalm 34 John: “Let us beseech the righteous” and “because the Jews were out to kill Him”. What we have here is not a true prophecy but an impressive foreshadowing. Mt 27:32-43 would be even more impressive. Let us listen sentence by sentence to the beautiful first reading and we will recognise the Passion in it.

FIRST READING     Wis. 2, 1a.12-22
Let us condemn the righteous to a shameful death.

From the Book of Wisdom

In false delusion the wicked say to one another :
“Let us besiege the righteous, for he is of no avail,
He goes against our works,
He accuses us of sins against the law
He accuses us of transgressions against our education.
“He pretends to have knowledge of God
And he calls himself a child of the Lord ;
he has become a reproach against our conceptions ;
Just to see him is a burden to us,
for his lifestyle is different from that of others
and his behaviour is unusual ;
he regards us as false currency,
he shuns our ways as if they were unclean ;
he calls the end of the righteous blessed,
he boasts that God is his father.
“Let us see if his words are true,
and let us see by way of trial what happens at his going away.
“For if the righteous man be the son of God,
He will come to his aid
and deliver him from the hand of his enemies.
“Let us deal with him with insolence and torment,
To see if he is truly gentle
And to test his patience.
“Let us condemn him to a shameful death,
For he will be protected, he says.”

So they reasoned, but in doing so they were going astray,
For their wickedness blinded them.
They did not understand the secrets of God,
They did not hope for the reward of a holy life,
nor did they believe in a prize of honour for spotless souls.

Interludium Ps. 34(33), 17-18, 19-20, 21, 23

The Lord is nigh for sorrowful hearts.

From evil-doers he turns away his face,
They are forgotten on earth.
The Lord listens to the crying of the pious
And rescues them from every need.

The Lord is near to sorrowful hearts,
He helps those who acknowledge their guilt.
Many disasters threaten the pious,
from each of them the Lord rescues.

The Lord shall watch over his bones
That he may not break any of them.
The Lord saves the lives of those who serve Him,
And whosoever fleeth to Him shall fear no punishment.

VERSION FOR THE EVANGELY John 3, 16

So much did God love the world
that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whoever believes in him shall not perish.

GOSPEL         John 7, 1-2.10.25-30
The Jews wanted to seize Jesus, but His hour had not yet come.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John

At that time Jesus wandered about in Galilee,
for He did not want to do so in Judea
because the Jews were out to kill Him.
It came against one of the Jewish feasts,
the Feast of Tabernacles.
When His brethren had gone to the feast
He also left,
not openly but inconspicuously.
Some of the Jerusalemites said :
“Is this not the man they seek to kill?
“And now look,
He is preaching in public and they are not saying anything to Him!
“Would the authorities really have recognised
that he is the Messiah?
“But of this man we know where he comes from;
But when the Messiah comes
no one knows where he comes from.”
While Jesus was teaching in the temple
He cried out with a loud voice:
“Ye know Me, and ye know whence I am ;
yet I have not come of Myself
But He Who sent Me is true;
It is Him whom you do not know.
“I know Him
because I am of Him, and He hath sent Me.”
They wanted to take possession of Him,
but no one laid hands on him
for His hour was not yet come.

Laudato Si

Encyclic of

POPE FRANCIS

On Care of the Common Home
