Considerations
Paul is animated by a holy zeal to bring people closer to Jesus Christ. His selfless commitment guarantees the authenticity of his ministry. After all, Paul is only concerned with the truth of Christ out of love for people. For: Great is everything He performs, captivating the attention of every one who checks it (Ps 111.2). Jesus himself is also completely disinterested in the Father. Jesus himself, too, is completely disinterested in the Father. So that we too might grow in selfless trust in God, Jesus teaches us to pray with his words. In the Lord’s Prayer, we first attune ourselves to what concerns God: His holy Name, his will, his kingdom. Then we ask that nothing should separate us from the Father: No distress, no guilt, no evil. For in the relationship with God and with fellow human beings, the temptation to self-interest is never far away.
FIRST READING 2 Cor. 11, 1-11
The gospel of God I have proclaimed to you for nothing.
From the holy apostle Paul’s two epistles to the Christians of Corinth
Brothers and sisters,
If ye would but bear a little folly
would be willing to endure from me!
But thou wilt.
Surely ye know
that my envy for thee is the envy of God Himself.
With thy only bridegroom Christ I have betrothed thee
To take thee as a virgin virgin to Him.
But sometimes I fear that thou art tempted
as once Eve was deceived by the cunning serpent,
and that thy thoughts are straying from faithfulness to Christ.
If the first person preaches a different Jesus
than we have preached,
or brings you another spirit or another gospel
than thou hast accepted from us,
let it be brought to you quietly.
Yet I do not think I am behind those archapostles !
Though I may be unskilled in speaking ,
I have enough knowledge of the truth
as I have shown you all in many ways.
Or have I done wrong
that in order to exalt you I humbled myself ?
Was it a sin
not to preach to you the gospel of God ?
Other churches have paid me
and taken support from them
in order to be of service to you.
And when I was with you and became deficient
I did not bother anyone.
The brothers who came from Macedonia
provided for all my needs.
In every respect I have refrained from being a burden to you.
And will continue to be so.
As sure as the truth of Christ is in me :
I will not allow myself to be deprived of that glory
in all the land of Achaïa.
Why?
Because I do not love you?
God knows better.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 111(110), 1-2, 3-4, 7-8
The work of your hands
Is good and trustworthy, Lord.
Or : Alleluia.
To the Lord I give thanks from all my heart,
in the midst of the pious, for all the congregation.
Great is all that He performs,
captivating the attention of all who contemplate it.
Gentleness and majesty speak from His deeds,
eternally He remains righteous and faithful.
Miracles He performed never to be forgotten,
affable and loving, the Lord shows Himself.
The work of His hands is good and trustworthy,
all that He decides is unshakeable.
It remains in force through the ages and always,
it is thoughtful and just.
ALLELUIA John 14, 23
Alleluia.
If any man love Me ,
he will keep My word ;
my Father will love him
and We will come to him.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mt 6:7-15
Thou must pray thus.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew
At that time Jesus said to his disciples :
“When ye pray ,
do not use repetition, like the pagans;
for these think
that by their multitude of words they will find hearing.
“Therefore follow not their example ,
for before you ask Him
your Father knows what ye need.
“Thou must therefore pray thus :
Our Father who art in heaven ,
hallowed be thy Name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
“Give us this day our daily bread.
“And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
“And lead us not into temptation,
but preserve us from evil.
“For if you forgive to men their faults
your heavenly Father will also forgive you ;
but if ye forgive not men
neither will your heavenly Father forgive your faults.”

POPE FRANCIS
On caring for the common home
208. It is always possible to develop a new capacity to step outside oneself and towards the other. Without this capacity, one does not recognise other creatures in their own worth, one is not interested in caring for anything for the benefit of the other, one lacks the ability to set oneself limits to avoid the suffering and decay of that which surrounds us. The fundamental attitude of transcending oneself by breaking through an isolated consciousness and self-involvement is the root that makes any concern for the other and the environment possible, and triggers the moral response to consider the effect caused by every action and personal decision outside oneself. When we are able to overcome individualism, an alternative lifestyle can actually be established and a change relevant in society becomes possible.
