CONSIDERATION
In the Eastern Church, Mary Magdalene, Mary of Bethany and the sinner who anointed the feet have always been clearly distinguished in Luke. In the West, since Gregory the Great, these three have been confused. Mary Magdalene came from Magdala (on the west coast of Lake Tiberias). She was, according to Luke, a heavily possessed person and was healed by Jesus. She took care of him, together with some other women. She followed him to the cross, was involved in his burial and embalming and is considered one of the privileged witnesses of the resurrection. She had to share the news with the others (Jn 20:17-18). She was therefore later on highly revered as a saint.

FIRST READING      Highl. 3, 1-4a

I found my soul’s beloved!

From the Song of Songs

Thus speaks the bride:

“At night upon my bed I seek my soul’s beloved,
but however I search, I do not find him.
“I get up, I go through the city,
in the squares and in the streets I look for my soul mate,
but no matter how I search, I cannot find him.
There I meet the watchmen traversing the city:
Hast thou seen my soulmate?
“Hardly have I passed them,
or there I find my soul’s beloved!”

Interludium      Ps. 63(62), 2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9

To Thee, Lord, my soul thirsts and my heart yearns.

God, my God, art Thou,
I seek Thee with great longing.
For you my soul thirsts and my heart yearns
like dry fields for rain.

Thus I look up to the place where thou dwellest,
I behold Thy power and Thy glory.
Worthier to me than life is your grace,
my mouth proclaims Your praise.

I will praise Thee as long as I live,
stretching forth my hands unto Thee.
My soul shall be satisfied with nourishing food,
my mouth shall jubilantly give thanks unto Thee.

For Thou hast always been my protector,
I will bask under Thy wings.
With all my heart I cling to Thee,
It is Your hand that sustains me.

ALLELUIA

Alleluia.
Tell us, Mary,
what hast thou seen on the way?
The tomb of Christ that was empty,
the glory of Him who is risen.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL       John 20, 1.11-18

Woman, why do you weep? Whom do you seek?

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John

On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene
came to the tomb early in the morning – it was still dark – and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.
Outside by the grave she stood weeping,
and while she was weeping she bent down to the grave
and saw on the spot where Jesus’ body had lain,
two angels clothed in white,
one at the head and one at the foot.
They spoke to her:
“Woman, why do you weep?”
She answered:
“They have taken away my Lord
and I know not where they have laid it.
When she had said this, she turned round
and saw Jesus standing, but without knowing that it was Jesus.
Jesus said to her:
“Woman, why do you weep?
“Who are you looking for?”
Thinking it was the gardener, she asked:
“Lord, if you have taken Him away,
tell me where you have put him
so that I may take him away.”
Thereupon Jesus said to her:
“Mary!”
She turned and said to Him in Hebrew :
“Rabbuni!”
which means teacher.
Then Jesus spoke:
“Do not hold on to Me
for I have not yet ascended to my Father,
but go to my brothers and say to them:
I ascend to my Father and your Father,
to my God and your God.”
Mary Magdalene went to tell the disciples
that she had seen the Lord
and what He had said to her.

Laudato Si

Encyclic of

POPE FRANCIS

On Care of the Common Home

238. The Father is the ultimate source of everything, the loving and self-communicating foundation of all that exists. The Son, his reflection, through whom all things were created, united himself to this earth when he was formed in the womb of Mary. The Spirit, infinite bond of love, is intimately present at the very heart of the universe, inspiring and bringing new pathways. The world was created by the three Persons acting as a single divine principle, but each one of them performed this common work in accordance with his own personal property. Consequently, “when we contemplate with wonder the universe in all its grandeur and beauty, we must praise the whole Trinity”.
