Invitation
May I hereby call your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with you the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one except,
can experience that joy by opening his heart
to the healing power of God’s word.
Available every day
Opening Word
‘God’s first word in the ten commandments is: I ; With this I’ man has to do, not with some general law. In every word of the ten commandments God is basically talking about Himself, and that is the essence of these commandments. Therefore, the ten commandments are revelation from God. Not a law, but God Himself we hear and obey in the ten commandments. And not on a law, but on God himself we suffer shipwreck, when we transgress these commandments.
(Bonhoeffer, Breviary, pp. 431-432)
FIRST READING Ex. 20, 1-17
The Law given by Moses.
From the Book of Exodus
In those days God spoke all the words that follow here.
“I am the Lord your God
Who led you out of Egypt, the house of slavery.
“Thou shalt have no other gods at My expense.
“Thou shalt make no images of gods,
no image of any being above in heaven,
down on earth or in the waters under the earth.
“Thou shalt not bow down to the earth before them
and pay them no divine honor;
for I, the Lord thy God,
I am to them that hate Me, a jealous God
who avenges the guilt of the fathers upon their children
unto the third and fourth generation,
but to those who love Me and keep My commandments,
a God who proves kindness to the thousandth generation.
“You shall not use the name of the Lord your God lightly ;
for the Lord will not let those who use his Name lightly,
not with impunity.
“Remember the Sabbath: It must be holy to you.
“Six days shalt thou work and perform all labor.
“But the seventh day is the Sabbath to the Lord thy God.
“Then ye shall not do any labor:
Thyself not, thy son not, thy daughter not,
not thy slave, not thy slave girl, not thy animals,
not even the stranger who lives with you.
“For in six days the Lord made heaven, the earth ,
made the sea with all that is in it.
“But on the seventh day He rested
and so blessed the Sabbath and made it a holy day.
“Honor thy father and thy mother.
“Then shalt thou live long upon the ground which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
“Thou shalt not kill.
“Thou shalt not commit adultery.
“Thou shalt not steal.
“Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
“Thou shalt not set thy sights on thy neighbor’s house;
thou shalt not set thy sights on thy neighbor’s wife,
not on his slave, his bondswoman,
his ox or his ass,
on nothing that belongs to him.”
Responsorial Ps. 19b(18), 8, 9, 10, 11
Keervers
Lord, Thou hast words of eternal life.
The law of the Lord is perfect,
it strengthens the uncertain spirit.
His precepts are trustworthy,
they make the ignorant wise.
Lawful are all His commands,
satisfying to the mind.
Clear as glass are His commandments,
they are a light to the eye.
The word of the Lord is fair,
it remains true for all eternity.
His judgments are true,
righteous in every matter.
Sought after more than gold or jewels,
prosperous as honeycomb.
Your servant takes them to heart,
he is richly rewarded for them.
ALLELUIA Ps. 25(24), 4c, 5a
Alleluia.
Teach me your paths, Lord;
lead me according to your word.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mt. 13, 18-23
He who hears and understands the word also bears fruit.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew
At that time Jesus said to his disciples:
“Ye then ,
listen to the parable of the sower:
“As often as anyone hears the word of the kingdom
hears but does not understand,
the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in his heart;
that is the one sown on the road.
“Who was sown on rocky places is he
who hears the word and immediately takes it up with joy:
But he has not taken root,
he lives by the moment,
and if he be
is oppressed or persecuted because of the word,
he immediately falls down.
“Who was sown among thistles is he
who does hear the word,
but this is choked by the cares of the world
and the delusion of riches stifles it
and so it remains without fruit.
“But he who was sown in good ground is he
who hears the word and understands it, and therefore bears fruit:
In one the yield is a hundredfold,
in another sixtyfold and in another thirtyfold.”

Encyclic of
POPE FRANCIS
On the care of the common home
244. In the meantime, we come together to take charge of this home which has been entrusted to us, knowing that all the good which exists here will be taken up into the heavenly feast. In union with all creatures, we journey through this land seeking God, for “if the world has a beginning and if it has been created, we must enquire who gave it this beginning, and who was its Creator”. Let us sing as we go. May our struggles and our concern for this planet never take away the joy of our hope.
