Saturday – HH. Martha, Mary and Lazarus, friends of the Lord

Jesus points us to the most important thing in life
and not to worry about extraneous matters.

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
Everyone, no one except,
can experience this joy by opening his heart
to the healing effect of God’s word.

Available every day

Consideration

In everyday reality, listening and serving can go together perfectly, and there is little point in trying to decide which of the two is best. Yet we can hear a message here: The most important thing guests and friends can expect from us is a listening ear. In hospitality, there is nothing more valuable than spending attentive time in each other’s presence. This is also true for encounters with the Lord: Listening to Him is indispensable for love and re-love to germinate and grow.

FIRST READING         1 John 4, 7-16
If we love one another, God lives in us.

From the First Letter of the Holy Apostle John

Friends,
let us love one another
for love comes from God.
Everyone who loves is a child of God,
and knows God.
Man without love does not know God,
for God is love.
And the love that is God
has revealed himself among us
by sending his only Son into the world
in order to bring us life.
Herein lies love :
It is not we who have loved God,
but He has loved us,
and he sent his Son
in order to erase our sins through the sacrifice of his life.

Friends,
if God has loved us so much,
we too must love one another.
No one has ever seen God,
but if we love one another,
God lives in us
and his love is made perfect in us.
This is the proof that we abide in Him
(as He dwells in us),
that He has given us part in His Spirit.
And we, we have seen and we testify
that the Father has sent His Son
to be the Saviour of the world.
If someone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God,
God lives in him and he remains in God.
Thus we have come to know the love that God has for us,
and we believe in it.
God is love: He who dwells in love
lives in God and God is with him.

INTERLUDIUM   Ps 34(33), 2-3, 16-17, 18-19

The Lord I will praise every day.

The Lord I will praise every day,
his praise is always on my lips.
My spirit is proud of the Lord’s favour,
let everyone who hears it rejoice.

The eye of the Lord is upon the pious,
his ear to their supplication.
From evil-doers He turns away His face,
they are forgotten on earth.

The Lord listens to the pious who cry out,
and rescues them from every need.
The Lord is near to sorrowful hearts,
He helps those who acknowledge their guilt.

ALLELUIA    cf. Acts 16, 14b

Alleluia.
Make our hearts receptive, Lord,
and that we may hear the word of your Son.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL     Lk 10, 38-42
Martha, how worried and preoccupied you are about so many things.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

In those days Jesus came to a village
where a woman named Martha received Him into her home.
She had a sister, Mary, who was
– sitting at the feet of the Lord –
listened to His words.
Martha was engrossed in the busyness of ministry,
but she stood by for a moment and said:
“Lord, do you not care
that You are indifferent to my sister letting me serve alone?
“Then tell her to help me.”
The Lord answered her :
“Martha, Martha,
how you worry and fret over so many things.
“Only one thing is necessary.
“Mary has chosen the best part
and it will not be taken away from her.”

Laudato Si

Encyclic of

POPE FRANCIS

On Care of the Common Home

245. God, who calls us to generous commitment and to give him our all, offers us the light and the strength needed to continue on our way. In the heart of this world, the Lord of life, who loves us so much, is always present. He does not abandon us, he does not leave us alone, for he has united himself definitively to our earth, and his love constantly impels us to find new ways forward. Praise be to him!
