Consideration
No one deals with God as intimately as Moses: Face to face, as a human being talks to his fellow man. God will be close to Moses. The God who reveals himself here is the same God who reveals himself in Jesus: A tender and patient, loving Father. The harsh words we hear in the first reading, however, seem to indicate the opposite. But the emphasis is on two things. First of all, the tender, loving God cannot remain indifferent to evil. And the God of love, who will always be with his people, builds in a great disproportion between loving and punishing: a thousand generations against four generations.
FIRST READING Ex. 33, 7-11a ; 34, 5b-9.28
God the Lord spoke to Moses face to face.
From the Book of Exodus
In those days Moses always pitched his tent outside the camp,
at a considerable distance;
He called it the Tent of Meeting.
Everyone who wanted to ask the Lord something
went to this tent outside the camp.
When Moses went to the tent
all the people stood at the entrance to their tents,
and kept watching him until he had gone into the tent.
And when Moses was inside, the column of cloud came down and stood over the entrance to the tent.
Then the Lord spoke to Moses.
When the people saw the column of cloud over the entrance to the tent,
they bowed down at the entrance to their tent.
Then the Lord spoke to Moses face to face,
as a man speaks to his fellow man.
And Moses called out the name ‘Lord’.
The Lord passed by Moses and called out : I am the Lord!
“God the Lord is a merciful and compassionate God,
great in love and faithfulness,
who shows mercy to thousands,
who forgives crimes, transgressions and sins,
but does not leave the guilty unpunished,
and punishes the crimes of the fathers
in their children and grandchildren,
in the third and fourth generations.”
Immediately Moses fell on his knees and bowed down.
Then he spoke :
“O Lord, be so good and go with us.
“These people are stubborn
but forgive us our trespasses and sins,
and regard us as thine own.”
Moses remained there for forty days and forty nights with the Lord,
without eating or drinking.
And the Lord wrote down the provisions of the covenant,
the Ten Commandments, in the stone slabs.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 103(102), 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13
The Lord is merciful and gracious.
The Lord is just in all that He does,
He gives justice to the oppressed.
He made his ways known to Moses,
He showed his works to the sons of Israel.
The Lord is merciful and gracious,
and longsuffering and kindness.
He does not keep on reproaching,
He is not forever wroth.
He does not deal with us as we deserve,
He does not repay us our trespasses.
As wide as the heavens span the earth,
His mercy is all-encompassing.
As far as the distance from east to west,
He drives out sin from us.
As much as a father loves his children,
the Lord loves his servants.
ALLELUIA cf. Acts 16, 14b
Alleluia.
Make our hearts receptive, Lord,
and that we may hear the word of your Son.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mt 13, 36-43
As the weeds are gathered together and burned in the fire,
so shall it be at the end of the world.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew
At that time Jesus let the crowd go and returned home.
His disciples now came to Him and said :
“Explain to us the parable of those weeds in the field.”
He answered them :
“He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man ;
the field is the world.
“The good seed are the children of the Kingdom;
the weeds are the children of evil,
and the enemy that sowed it is the devil.
“The harvest is the end of the world
and the reapers are the angels.
As now the weeds are gathered together
and burned in the fire,
so it will be at the end of the world.
“The Son of Man will send his angels out in thousands
and they will gather out of his kingdom
all those who sin and do iniquity
to cast them into the furnace of fire
where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
“Then shall the righteous
will shine like the sun in their Father’s kingdom.
“He who has ears, he listens.”

POPE FRANCIS
On caring for the common home
Prayer for our Earth
Almighty God,
who art in the infinite universe
and in the smallest of your creatures,
Who with Your tenderness
surround all that exists,
judge us by the power of thy love,
that we may care
for life and preserve its beauty.
Enfold us with peace,
that we may live as brothers and sisters,
without harming anyone.
God of the poor,
help us to help the abandoned and forgotten people of this world
who are so precious in your eyes,
save them.
Make our lives healthy again,
so that we may protect the world
and not plunder it,
so that we may sow beauty
and not pollution and destruction.
Touch the hearts
of all those who seek only advantage
at the expense of the poor and of the earth.
Teach us to discover the value of all things,
to look with wonder,
and to recognise that we are deeply connected
with all creatures
on our way to your infinite light.
Thank that Thou art with us every day.
Please encourage us in our struggle
for justice, love and peace.
