Invitation
May I hereby call your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with you the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one except,
can experience that joy by opening his heart
to the healing power of God’s word.
Available every day.
Opening Word
Today Jesus takes us
atop a high mountain.
There God speaks to us
and shows us how far his love reaches.
In this hour, with great confidence, we want to
listen to his Word.
He gives us hope and perspective
to a life without pain and without tears.
Let us thank God for this good news
and joyfully celebrate Eucharist.
FIRST READING Dan. 7, 9-10,13-14
His garment was white as snow.
From the Prophet Daniel
In my vision, I saw that thrones were set up
and that a highly aged man was sitting down.
His robe was white as snow
and his head hair white as wool.
His throne was made up of flames,
its wheels of blazing fire.
A stream of fire welled up
and flowed before Him.
A thousand times thousands served Him
and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him.
The court of justice sat down
and the books were opened.
In my nightly vision, I saw the clouds of heaven
one arriving who looked like a human being.
He went to the one on high and was led before Him.
Then dominion was given to Him,
glory and royal power;
all nations, tribes, and languages paid homage to Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion
that never perishes,
His kingdom never perishes.
Responsorial Ps. 97(96), 1-2, 5-6, 9
Keervers
The Lord is king: All the earth is under his power.
The Lord is king, the earth may rejoice,
glad are the lands around the sea.
Dark clouds form his bodyguard,
and law and justice bear his throne.
Mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
the Ruler of all the world.
The heavens proclaim his holiness
and all nations behold his glory.
For all the earth is under Your power,
Thou art the highest of the gods.
SECOND READING 2 Pet 1:16-19
We ourselves have heard this voice from heaven.
From the second letter of the holy apostle Peter
Dear ones,
When we proclaimed to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ
proclaimed to you,
we did not rely on cleverly devised myths
but we spoke as eyewitnesses of His splendor.
For He received from God the Father honor and glorification
when by the exalted Majesty this word was addressed to Him :
“This is My beloved Son
in Whom I am well pleased.”
And this voice we ourselves heard sounding from heaven
when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
Because of this, for us,
the word of the prophets have even more authority.
Verse for the Gospel Mt. 17, 5c
Alleluia.
This is My Son, the Beloved,
in whom I have been pleased;
listen to Him.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mt.17, 1-9
His robe began to shine like the sun.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew
At that time Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John
with him
and brought them to the top of a high mountain,
where they were alone.
He was transformed before their eyes :
His face began to shine like the sun
and his garment became shining like the light.
Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them,
who were conversing with Him?
Peter took the floor and said to Jesus :
“Lord, it is good that we are here.
“If You will, I will pitch three tents here,
one for Thee, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
Still, he had not spoken
or a luminous cloud overshadowed them
and out of that cloud sounded a voice :
“This is My Son, the Beloved,
in whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.”
On hearing this, the disciples threw themselves down to the earth,
seized with intense fear.
But Jesus came to them, touched them, and said :
“Stand up and do not be afraid.”
When they lifted up their eyes they saw no one but Jesus.
While descending the mountain, Jesus enjoined them :
“Speak to no one of what you have beheld,
before the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”

Encyclic of
POPE FRANCIS
On the care of the common home
6. My predecessor Benedict XVI likewise proposed “eliminating the structural causes of the dysfunctions of the world economy and correcting models of growth which have proved incapable of ensuring respect for the environment”. He observed that the world cannot be analyzed by isolating only one of its aspects, since “the book of nature is one and indivisible”, and includes the environment, life, sexuality, the family, social relations, and so forth. It follows that “the deterioration of nature is closely connected to the culture which shapes human coexistence”. Pope Benedict asked us to recognize that the natural environment has been gravely damaged by our irresponsible behavior. The social environment has also suffered damage. Both are ultimately due to the same evil: the notion that there are no indisputable truths to guide our lives, and hence human freedom is limitless. We have forgotten that “man is not only a freedom which he creates for himself. Man does not create himself. He is spirit and will, but also nature”. With paternal concern, Benedict urged us to realize that creation is harmed “where we have the final word, where everything is simply our property and we use it for ourselves alone. The misuse of creation begins when we no longer recognize any higher instance than ourselves when we see nothing else but ourselves”.
