Consideration
Today’s Europe needs the presence of mature believing Catholics and Christian missionary communities who bear witness to God’s love for all people. This renewed proclamation of Christ must be accompanied by profound unity and communion with the Church, and in dialogue with the followers of other religions. The Gospel is a light that illuminates all areas of social life: From the family to culture, the school, the university, young people and the mass media, the economy, and politics. Christ meets people where they live and work, giving full meaning to their existence.
(Pope John Paul II)
FIRST READING Hos. 2, 16b.17b. 21-22
I take you as my bride forever.
From the prophet Hoséa
This is what the LORD says:
“I will make your mother Israel going
to the wilderness, and I will speak to her heart.
There she will become willing again,
as in the days of her youth
when she came up out of Egypt.
I will take you as my bride forever,
in righteousness and justice,
in kindness and mercy,
as my bride in unbreakable faithfulness:
Then shall ye know the LORD.”
Interludium Ps. 45(44), 11-12, 14-15, 16-17
Behold, the bridegroom is there,
go and meet Christ the Lord (cf. Mt 25:6)
Listen, daughter, be attentive,
forget thy people, forget thy father’s house.
Your beauty awakens the love of the King,
pay him homage, for he is your lord.
There the king’s daughter enters
in her beauty,
Her garments were of gold woven cloth.
In the splendour of colour, they lead her to the king,
with her retinue of maidens, she approaches.
They are overtaken with joy and jubilation,
they enter the royal residence.
Thy sons shall one day take the place of thy father,
they shall be princes in all the land.
Alleluia Mt 5, 10
Alleluia.
This is the wise virgin
who finds the Lord watchful ;
at His coming, she enters with Him
To celebrate a wedding.
Alleluia
GOSPEL Mt 25, 1-13
There is the Bridegroom, go and meet Him!
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew
In those days Jesus told his disciples this parable:
“The kingdom of heaven is like ten girls
who went out with their lamps
to meet the bridegroom.
Five of them were foolish, and the other five were wise.
For the foolish ones took their lamps with them,
but no oil;
but those who were wise took with their lamps
oil with their lamps.
When the bridegroom was very late,
they all dozed off and slept.
But in the middle of the night, a cry went up:
“There is the bridegroom! Go and meet him!”
Immediately all the girls were awake
and put their lamps in order.
The foolish said to the wise:
“Give us some oil, for our lamps are going out.”
But the wise replied:
“Nay, for once there may not be enough
for us and you together.
Go to the vendors and get some for yourselves. But while they were on their way to buy
came the bridegroom,
and those who were ready,
entered with him to celebrate the wedding;
and the door was locked.
Later the other girls came and said:
“Lord, Lord, open up!”
But he replied:
“Verily I say unto thee, I know thee not.”
So be vigilant, for ye know neither day nor hour.”

POPE FRANCIS
On Care of the Common Home
9. At the same time, Bartholomew has drawn attention to the ethical and spiritual roots of environmental problems, which require that we look for solutions not only in technology but in a change of humanity; otherwise, we would be dealing merely with symptoms. He asks us to replace consumption with sacrifice, greed with generosity, wastefulness with a spirit of sharing, an asceticism which “entails learning to give, and not simply to give up. It is a way of loving, of moving gradually away from what I want to what God’s world needs. It is liberation from fear, greed and compulsion”. As Christians, we are also called “to accept the world as a sacrament of communion, as a way of sharing with God and our neighbours on a global scale. It is our humble conviction that the divine and the human meet in the slightest detail in the seamless garment of God’s creation, in the last speck of dust of our planet”.
