Nineteenth Sunday through the year

Invitation

May I draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel

This invitation wants to share with you the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, without except
can experience that joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of the Word of God.

Available every day

Opening word
We live in changing circumstances of life.
Sometimes peace and calm are disturbed.
Certainties give way to doubt and uncertainty.
Restlessness can overwhelm us.
Yes, there can be storms in our lives.
Redeemer is when calm returns.

The prophet Elijah may experience God passing by on a gentle breeze.
Jesus’ disciples faced contrary winds at the lake.
Peter, like Jesus, wanted to cross the water on foot,
but he sinks in doubt.
The hand of Jesus is saving.

We too, in our fear and despair,
know that Jesus is near.
In the turbulence of our life, the Lord also wants to give us peace.
Rest and peace.
That’s why we ask him at the beginning of this celebration
for his mercy.

FIRST READING            1 Kings 19, 9a11-13a

Stand before the Lord on the mountain.

From the first book of Kings

In those days Elijah the prophet came to Horeb, the mountain of God.
There he went into a cave and spent the night.
But the Lord said to him
“Go out and stand before the Lord on the mountain.

So the Lord passed by.
A fierce storm passed before him
that caused the mountains to split and the rocks to shatter.
But the Lord was not in the storm.
The storm was followed by an earthquake.
But the Lord was not in the earthquake either.
The earthquake was followed by fire.
But not even in the fire was the Lord.
The fire was followed by the whisper of a gentle breeze.
As soon as Elijah heard this,
he covered his face with his mantle,
went out and stood
at the entrance of the cave.

Responsorial           Ps  85(84), 9ab-10, 11-12,13-14

Keervers
Show us your mercy, O Lord.

I will listen to what God says to me
surely a word of reconciliation.
His salvation is near to those who fear him,
His glory comes to dwell with us again.

Mercy and truth meet
peace embraces justice.
Truth springs from the earth
righteousness looks down from heaven.

Then the Lord grants us his blessing
and our land yields rich fruits.
Then through Him justice will go forth
and prosperity will follow in his footsteps.

SECOND READING           Rom. 9, 1-5

I wish I were accursed, if only I could help my brethren.

From the first letter of the holy Apostle Paul to the Christians of Rome

My brothers and sisters,

I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie,
my conscience assures me in the Holy Spirit:
In my heart there is great sorrow
and a sorrow that does not cease.

Truly, I wish
to be cursed and separated from Christ,
if I could help my brothers and relatives with this.
After all, they are Israelites,
to them belongs the adoption as sons,
the glory, the covenants, the legislation,
the worship and the promises;
to them are the patriarchs
and from them is Christ according to the flesh,
who above all things is God:
The blessed for ever and ever. Amen.

Gospel Verse       Ps. 130(129), 5

Alleluia.
In the Lord I put my hope,
in his word I trust.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL            Mt 14, 22-33

Tell me to come to you over the waters.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew

After the multiplication of the loaves
Jesus compelled his disciples to get into the boat
and set sail for the other side
while he sent the people home.
When He had sent the people away
He went up on the mountain to pray in solitude.
Night was falling and He was there alone.

The boat was already a long way from the shore
and was ravaged by the waves,
for the wind was against them.
Towards morning
Jesus came to them on foot across the lake.
But when the disciples saw him crossing the lake like this,
they were upset
because they thought they saw a ghost
and began to cry out in fear.
But Jesus immediately said to them
“Be calm, it is I.
“Do not be afraid.
Lord,” Peter answered, “if it is You,
tell me to come to you by water”.
Jesus answered:
“Come!”
Peter got out of the boat
and walked across the water to Jesus.
But when he realised how strong the wind was ,
he was afraid;
he began to sink and cried out:
“Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and took hold of him,
and said to him:
“Little believer, why did you doubt?”
After they had climbed into the boat,
the wind died down.

The occupants threw themselves before Him and said:
“Truly, You are the Son of God.”

On Care for the Common Home

My appeal

13. The urgent challenge to protect our common home includes a concern to bring the whole human family together to seek a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change. The Creator does not abandon us; he never forsakes his loving plan or repents of having created us. Humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home. Here I want to recognize, encourage and thank all those striving in countless ways to guarantee the protection of the home which we share. Particular appreciation is owed to those who tirelessly seek to resolve the tragic effects of environmental degradation on the lives of the world’s poorest. Young people demand change. They wonder how anyone can claim to be building a better future without thinking of the environmental crisis and the sufferings of the excluded.
