Consideration
After the ritual appointment of Joshua and the transfer of authority over the people, Deuteronomy recounts the death of Moses in an exceptionally simple manner (verse 5). This narrative contrasts with all the previous ones. Very elaborately everything has been narrated: The handover, and the farewell songs. Now there is the impressive simplicity. Death is preceded by a moving story. Moses still gets to see the promised land for himself. So the promise to the progenitor is fulfilled. The end of the book refers once more to the handover to Joshua, with the additional mention that no one will be comparable to Moses.
FIRST READING Deut. 34, 1-12
As the Lord had said, Moses died.
No prophet in Israel has risen like him.
From the Book of Deuteronomy
In those days Moses went up from the plain to Mount Nebo,
to the top of the Pisgah, opposite Jericho.
And the Lord showed him all the land :
Gilead as far as Dan,
all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh,
the region of Judah unto the sea in the west,
the Negeb, the Jordan, the plain of Jericho,
the city of palms, even to Soar.
Then the Lord said to him :
“Now this is the land of which I gave Abraham,
I have promised under oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob:
I will give it to your descendants.
“I have shown it to you with your own eyes,
though you shall not see it come to pass.”
There in Moab died Moses, the servant of the Lord,
as the Lord had said.
He was buried in the valley near Bet-Peor in Moab ;
to this day no one knows where his grave lies.
Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died.
His eyes were not dimmed and his strength not diminished.
In the plain of Moab, the Israelites mourned Moses for thirty days, until the time of mourning was over.
Joshua, son of Nun,
was filled with the spirit of wisdom,
since Moses laid hands on him,
and the Israelites obeyed him
and did what the Lord had commanded Moses ;
but no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses,
who had known the Lord face to face
and who, being sent by the Lord, went into Egypt to Pharaoh,
to his courtiers and to all his country
all those signs and wonders
and with great power had performed impressive
deeds for Israël.
INTERLUDIUM Ps 66(65), 1-3a, 5, 8, 16-17
Praise be to God,
He has saved my life again and again.
Rejoice before God, all the nations of the earth,
sing of the glory of his name.
Give him your homage and say to your God :
Astonishing are all thy deeds.
Come and see what God has done,
awe-inspiring acts among men.
Praise now, all nations, our God,
proclaim the fame of his deeds.
Come, therefore, ye who fear God, hearken unto me,
I will tell thee what he hath done unto me.
To Him, my mouth has always asked for help,
My tongue has always praised Him.
ALLELUIA cf. Eph. 1, 17-18
Alleluia.
The God of our Lord Jesus Christ
may our inner eye be enlightened,
to see how great is the hope
to which He calls us.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mt 18, 15-20
If your brother who has sinned listens to you,
then you have won your brother.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew
At that time Jesus said to his disciples :
“When your brother has sinned,
reward him in private.
“If he listens to you,
then you have won your brother.
“But if he does not listen,
then bring one or two more men in.
That all may rest upon the testimony of two or three witnesses.
“If he will not listen to them,
take the matter to the church.
“If he will not listen to the Church either,
then consider him a heathen or a tax collector.
“Verily I say unto you :
Whatever you bind on earth
shall also be bound in heaven,
and whatsoever ye shall lose on earth
shall also be loosed in heaven.”
“Likewise I say unto you :
When two of you are united in asking anything on earth,
it may be what it wants,
they shall obtain it from my Father who is in heaven.
“For where two or three are united in my name,
there am I in their midst.”

Laudato Si
Encyclic of
POPE FRANCIS
On Care of the Common Home
16. Although each chapter will have its own subject and specific approach, it will also take up and re-examine important questions previously dealt with. This is particularly the case with several themes which will reappear as the Encyclical unfolds. As examples, I will point to the intimate relationship between the poor and the fragility of the planet, the conviction that everything in the world is connected, the critique of new paradigms and forms of power derived from technology, the call to seek other ways of understanding the economy and progress, the value proper to each creature, the human meaning of ecology, the need for forthright and honest debate, the serious responsibility of international and local policy, the throwaway culture and the proposal of a new lifestyle. These questions will not be dealt with once and for all, but reframed and enriched again and again.
