Consideration

Glorified down to her body, Mary appears to us in the glory of her Assumption as the highest and most beautiful fruit of redemption. As Mother of Him whose ‘Kingdom knows no end’, she is also for all men a mighty intercessor on their way to the glory of the children of God.
(From the Missal for weekdays and celebrations of saints).

FIRST READING Isa. 9, 1-3.5-6

A Son is given to us.

From the Prophet Isaiah.

The people walking in darkness
see a great light ;
a light shines upon those
who dwell in the land of deadly darkness.
Thou hast
increased their joy.
Before Thy face they are full of joy,
joy like that for the harvest,
like that of men rejoicing at the division of the spoils.
For the yoke that weighed heavily on the people,
the rod on their shoulders,
and the rod of their drivers,
Thou hast broken them to pieces as in the days of Midian.
For a child was born unto us,
a son was given to us;
Him the power is laid upon the shoulders
and one calls Him :
Wonderful Counsellor,
Divine Hero:
Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.
Great power and unlimited prosperity
will accrue to David’s throne
and to his kingdom
so that it will be founded
and firmly built on law and justice
from now until eternity.
The zeal of the Lord of heavenly powers will bring it about.

INTERLUDIUM            Ps. 113(112), 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8

The Lord places the powerless
amidst the mighty of his people.

Glorified, servants of the Lord,
glorify the Name of the Lord.
The Name of the Lord is praised
today and forever.

From dawn to dusk
should everyone worship that Name.
For above the nations the Lord enthrones,
His Glory rules the heavens.

Who is like the Lord our God,
seated high above the stars?
Who overlooks from on high
the firmament and the earth.

Who lifts the powerless from the dust,
from rubbish heaps take away the poor;
to place them in the circle of princes,
in the midst of the mighty of his people.

ALLELUIA               cf. Acts 16, 14b

Alleluia.
Make our hearts receptive, Lord,
and that we turn to the word of your Son.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL              Lk. 1, 26-38

Thou shalt conceive and bring a son into the world.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

At that time
the angel Gabriel was sent by God
to a city in Galilee, Nazareth,
to a virgin who was betrothed to a man named Joseph,
from the house of David;
the virgin’s name was Mary.
He entered her and spoke :
“Rejoice, Gifted One, the Lord is with thee,
Thou art the blessed one among women.”
She was startled by that word
and wondered what that greeting could mean anyway.
But the angel said to her :
“Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.
“Behold, thou shalt conceive and bring forth a son
and thou must give Him the name Jesus.
“He shall be great
and be called Son of the Highest.
“God the Lord will give Him the throne of His father David
and He shall be King over the house of Jacob forever and ever
and His kingship will never come to an end.”
Mary, however, spoke to the angel :
“How shall this come about since I know no man?”
To this the angel answered her :
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you
and the power of the Highest will overshadow you ;
Therefore whatever is brought into the world
shall be called holy, Son of God.
“Know that even Elisabeth, thy kinswoman,
in her old age conceived a son
and, though she was called barren,
she is now in her sixth month ;
for before God nothing is impossible.”
Now Mary said :
“Behold the handmaid of the Lord ;
unto me according to thy word.”
And the angel went from her.

Laudato Si

Encyclic of

POPE FRANCIS

On caring for the common home
22. These problems are closely linked to the disposable culture that affects both the outcast human beings and the things that are rapidly turning into rubbish. For example, let us realize that most of the paper produced is thrown away and not recycled. With difficulty, we acknowledge that the functioning of natural ecosystems is exemplary: the plants synthesize nutrients that feed the herbivores; these in turn feed the carnivores, which provide significant amounts of organic waste that gives rise to a new generation of crops. In contrast, the industrial system has not developed the ability to process waste and reuse residues at the end of the production and consumption cycle. It has not yet succeeded in introducing a cycle of production that safeguards resources for all and for future generations and that requires minimizing the use of non-renewable resources, limiting consumption, maximizing the efficiency of exploitation, reuse and recycling. Addressing this issue would be a way to counter the throwaway culture, which ultimately harms the entire planet, but we see that progress in this direction is still very scarce.
