Liturgical tradition identifies Bartholomew with Nathanael, from the vocation story of John. Bartholomew was informed by Philip about his meeting with Jesus: “The one about whom Moses wrote in the Law and also the prophets, we have found him: Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth’. Like every right-believing Israelite, Nathanael knew that the Messiah had to come from Bethlehem, from the tribe of David. That is why he initially reacts haughtily – surely nothing good can come out of Nazareth? Then Philip himself brought his friend to Jesus.
This is how God’s voice works in us: It calls us and leads us through others. God does not want to work alone; He invites us to participate in His kingdom. Are we not also tools that invite others to get to know the Lord?
FIRST READING Apok. 21, 9b-14
On the foundation stones were inscribed the names
of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
From the Revelation of the holy apostle John
An angel came to me and said :
“Come!
“I will show you the Bride of the Lamb”.
And he brought me in the spirit on a very high mountain
and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem,
as it came down from God out of heaven,
radiant with the glory of God:
It shone like the most precious stone
and like crystal clear jasper.
The city was surrounded by a very high wall with twelve gates
and at the gates were twelve angels;
names were engraved upon them,
the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.
There were three gates on the east, three on the north,
three on the south, and three on the west.
And the wall of the city had twelve foundation stones
and on them were the twelve names
of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
Interludium Ps. 145(144), 10-11, 12-13ab, 17-18
Your saints, Lord, make your power
known to men.
Your works shall praise You, Lord,
your devotees shall praise You.
They shall extol the glory of thy dominion,
they shall proclaim your power.
They shall make known thy power unto men,
the splendor of thy kingdom.
Thy kingdom is a kingdom for all ages,
thy dominion is for every generation.
The Lord is just in all his ways,
and holy in all that he does.
The Lord is near to everyone who calls upon Him,
to everyone who prays sincerely to Him.
ALLELUIA John 1, 49b
Alleluia.
Rabbi, thou art the Son of God,
Thou art the King of Israel.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL John 1, 45-51
Truly this is an Israelite in whom there is no guile!
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John
At that time
Philip met Nathanael and said to him :
“The one about whom Moses wrote in the Law
and also the prophets,
it is Him we have found:
Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”
Natanael asked :
“From Nazareth, can anything good come from there?”
To which Philip replied :
“Then come and see.”
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him
and said, pointing at him:
“Truly this is an Israelite in whom there is no guile!”
Nathanael said to Him :
“How do You know me?”
Jesus answered him :
“Before Philip called you
I saw you sitting under the fig tree.”
Then Nathanael said to Him :
“Rabbi!
Thou art the Son of God.
“Thou art the King of Israel.”
Jesus answered :
“Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe?
“Thou shalt see greater things than these.”
And He added :
“Verily, verily, I say unto thee :
Thou shalt see heaven open
and see the angels of God ascending and descending
in the service of the Son of Man.”

On Care of the Common Home
24. Warming has effects on the carbon cycle. It creates a vicious circle that aggravates the situation even more, affecting the availability of essential resources like drinking water, energy and agricultural production in warmer regions, and leading to the extinction of part of the planet’s biodiversity. The melting in the polar ice caps and in high-altitude plains can lead to the dangerous release of methane gas, while the decomposition of frozen organic material can further increase the emission of carbon dioxide. Things are made worse by the loss of tropical forests which would otherwise help to mitigate climate change. Carbon dioxide pollution increases the acidification of the oceans and compromises the marine food chain. If present trends continue, this century may well witness extraordinary climate change and unprecedented destruction of ecosystems, with serious consequences for all of us. A rise in the sea level, for example, can create extremely serious situations, if we consider that a quarter of the world’s population lives on the coast or nearby and that the majority of our megacities are situated in coastal areas.
