Consideration
Faith is often presented as cherishing hope against all hope. Humanly speaking, Abraham had every reason to despair, to question his future, to think he was in a hopelessly blocked situation, to doubt. Biblically speaking, it is precisely such hopelessness that constitutes the ground of God’s love. Abraham, against all hope, put his trust in God. What is written about Abraham also applies to us. Our sins and those of the world around us, the responsibilities that sometimes crush us, the worries that weigh on us: Let us lay them at the Lord’s feet. He has promised to save us, and He will.
FIRST READING Rom. 4, 20-25
These words were not only written down
for Abraham’s sake but also for ours,
whom believing will be charged likewise.
From the Holy Apostle Paul’s letter to the Christians of Rome
Brothers and sisters,
Abraham did not doubt God’s promise for a moment.
On the contrary,
he honoured God by the strength of his faith,
by his firm conviction
that He is able to fulfil what He has promised.
Therefore, it was imputed to him as righteousness.
These words were written down not only for his sake
but also for our sake,
who believe it will also be imputed,
since we believe in Him
Who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead :
Jesus who was delivered up for our failings
and was raised for our justification.

At that time, someone from the people said to Jesus :
“Master, tell my brother that he shares the inheritance with me.”
But Jesus answered him :
“Man, who has appointed Me judge or divider over you?”
And He spoke to him :
“Beware and guard against all greed !
“For no possession, – though so abundant –
can secure your life.”
He told them the following parable :
“The land of a rich man had yielded a great harvest.
“Therefore this one deliberated to himself :
What should I do?
“I have no room to store my harvest.
“And he said :
This is what I am going to do :
I will tear down my barns and build larger ones:
In them I will store all my wealth in corn.
“Then I will say to myself :
Man, you have a great wealth lying, for long years ;
rest now,
eat and drink and enjoy it !
“But God spoke to him :
Fool !
“This very night they will come to claim your life from you ;
and all those provisions you have made,
for whom are they then?
“So it goes with one who amasses treasures for himself ,
but is not rich with God.”

On caring for the common home
83. The final goal of the course of the universe lies in the fullness of God, already achieved through Christ, pivot of universal maturation. Thus we add another argument to reject any despotic and irresponsible domination of the other creatures by the human being. The ultimate goal of the other creatures is not us. On the contrary, all proceed with us and through us towards the common goal that is God, in a transcendent fullness where the risen Christ embraces and illuminates all. Indeed, the human being, endowed with intelligence and love and drawn to the fullness of Christ, is called to bring all creatures back to their Creator.
