CONSIDERATION
After describing the ‘life according to the flesh’, Paul now describes the ‘life in the spirit’. This is a totally new life that is entirely led by God’s Spirit. He makes us children of God, heirs together with Christ. We share in his suffering – and also in his glorification.
FIRST READING Rom 8:12-17
You have received the spirit of childhood
which makes us cry out: Abba, Father!
From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Rome
Brothers and sisters,
We are debtors
but not of the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
If ye live according to the flesh, ye shall surely die.
But if by the Spirit ye put to death the practices of selfishness
you will live.
All who are led by the Spirit of God
are children of God.
The spirit which ye have received is not one of slavishness
that would cause you to fear again.
You have received the spirit of filiation
which makes us cry out :
“Abba, Father!
The Spirit himself confirms the testimony of our spirit
that we are children of God.
But if we are children
then we are also heirs,
and heirs of God, together with Christ,
since we share in his sufferings in order to share in his glorification.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 68(67), 2, 4, 6-7ab, 20-21
Our God is a God who redeems,
the Lord our God snatches from death.
When God exalts himself the enemy disperses,
where He shows Himself, those who hate Him flee.
But all the righteous rejoice for joy
and stand carefree before the face of God.
For orphans a father, for widows a support
God is in His holy habitation.
He gives the neglected a home of their own,
prisoners freedom and prosperity.
The Lord be praised day by day:
He bears our burdens, the God of our salvation.
For our God is a God who redeems,
the Lord our God delivers from death.
ALLELUIA Ps. 130(129), 5
Alleluia.
In the Lord I put my hope,
in his word I trust.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 13, 10-17
Should not this woman, who was a daughter of Abraham,
be freed from her bonds on the Sabbath day?
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
Once Jesus was teaching on the Sabbath in one of the synagogues,
when suddenly there came a woman
who – possessed by a spirit – had been ill for eighteen years.
She was bent over and could not raise herself at all.
When Jesus saw her, He called her to Himself and said :
“Woman, you have been delivered from your sickness.”
He laid his hands on her
and at the same time she arose
and she glorified God.
Annoyed because Jesus healed on the Sabbath,
the ruler of the synagogue took the floor
and spoke to the people:
“There are six days on which to work.
“So come and be healed on those days
and not on the Sabbath day.”
Jesus answered him :
“Hypocrites!
“Does not every one of you on the Sabbath
untie his ox or his donkey from the manger to take it to the watering place?
“And should this woman
– still a daughter of Abraham –
who for eighteen years
was bound by the devil for eighteen years,
should not be freed from her chains on the Sabbath day?
When He said this, all His opponents were ashamed.
But all the crowd rejoiced at all the glorious deeds He was doing.

Encyclic of
POPE FRANCIS
On Care of the Common Home
91. A sense of deep communion with the rest of nature cannot be real if our hearts lack tenderness, compassion and concern for our fellow human beings. It is clearly inconsistent to combat trafficking in endangered species while remaining completely indifferent to human trafficking, unconcerned about the poor, or undertaking to destroy another human being deemed unwanted. This compromises the very meaning of our struggle for the sake of the environment. It is no coincidence that, in the canticle in which Saint Francis praises God for his creatures, he goes on to say: “Praised be you my Lord, through those who give pardon for your love”. Everything is connected. Concern for the environment thus needs to be joined to a sincere love for our fellow human beings and an unwavering commitment to resolving the problems of society.
