Consideration
Nothing, absolutely nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. This is what Paul proclaimed in the previous chapter of his letter to the Romans. But suddenly the tone changes. Paul himself is shocked by his strong expressions. Why then is my people, the chosen people, separated from Christ? It is a staggering drama for which he has no words; with which he knows no way. So there is an exception, namely the non-acceptance of God’s love, the faithlessness. What then do you do with God’s promise?
FIRST READING Rom 9, 1-5
I would like to be accursed myself
if I could help my brothers.
From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Rome
Brothers and sisters,
I speak the truth in Christ,
I do not lie,
my conscience warrants it to me in the Holy Spirit:
In my heart is great sorrow and a pain that does not cease.
Truly,
I would like to be myself accursed and separated from Christ
if I could help my brothers and kinsmen.
For they are Israelites :
To them belongs the adoption of sons ;
they belong to the glory, the covenants,
the law, the worship, and the promises ;
from them are the patriarchs
and from them comes forth the Christ in the flesh
who is God above all things :
The blessed for ever and ever!
For ever and ever. Amen.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 147, 12-13, 14-15, 19-20
Praise now the Lord, Jerusalem.
Praise now the Lord, Jerusalem,
Zion, glorify your God!
For he hath securely locked thy gates,
blessed your sons within your walls.
He maketh you to till your fields in peace
and feed you with wheat flour.
He sends his command over the earth
and hastens his word.
It is He who sent Jacob his word,
His law and commandments for Israel.
Never was there a nation that He treated so,
no other does He make known His ways.
ALLELUIA Mt 11, 25
Alleluia.
I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
because thou hast revealed these things to children.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 14, 1-6
Which one of you shall not immediately
if his son or his ox falls into a well, who will not pull him out, even on the Sabbath?
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
When Jesus, on a sabbath
entered the house of one of the chief Pharisees
they were watching him constantly.
At one point He noticed a man
suffering from dropsy.
Then Jesus went to the priests and Pharisees and asked them
with the question :
“Can one heal someone on the Sabbath or not?”
But they said nothing.
Then He laid His hand on him;
He healed him and let him go.
Then He turned to them with the words:
“Who among you will not immediately
If his son or his ox falls into a well, who will not pull him out,
even though it is the sabbath?”
They were unable to object.

Encyclic of
POPE FRANCIS
On the Care of the Common Home
95. The natural environment is a collective good, the patrimony of all humanity and the responsibility of everyone. If we make something our own, it is only to administer it for the good of all. If we do not, we burden our consciences with the weight of having denied the existence of others. That is why the New Zealand bishops asked what the commandment “Thou shall not kill” means when “twenty percent of the world’s population consumes resources at a rate that robs the poor nations and future generations of what they need to survive”.
