Third Sunday through the Year

Boek met kaars 40

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day

Opening word
We live in a time when
many appeal to ’their’ truth.
Jesus’ gospel message as the only beatific way
may therefore seem pretentious or too radical to many.
And yet we dare to suspect
that there is only one way to go:
the path of radical love in Jesus’ footsteps.
in this celebration we pray for courage
so that we might answer his call to follow him
wholeheartedly.

FIRST READING                      Jonah 3, 1-5.10

The Ninevites repented of their bad behaviour.

From the prophet Jonah

The word of the Lord was addressed to Jonah:
“Make your way to Nineveh, the great city ,
and proclaim to her the message that I will instill in you.”
And Jonah made his way to Nineveh
as the Lord had commanded him.

Now Nineveh was a great big city,
as much as three day’s journey away.
And Jonah began to go into the city, a day’s journey away,
and he preached as follows:
“Forty more days and Nineveh will perish!”

The people of Nineveh believed the word of God;
they proclaimed a fast
and from large to small all put on the penitential garment.

And God saw what they did
and how they repented of their bad behaviour.
And He became sorry that He had threatened them with destruction
And He did not carry out His threat.

RESPONSORIAL                 Ps. 25(24), 4-5ab, 6-7, 8-9

Refrain
Show me your ways, Lord.

Show me your ways, Lord,
Teach me your paths.
Lead me according to Your Word,
for Thou art my God and Redeemer.

Remember Your mercy, Lord,
Your ever-given compassion.
Remember not the evil of my youth,
but remember me with mercy.

The Lord is good and righteous,
therefore He shows sinners the way.
He leads the lowly along honourable paths,
He teaches the simple what to do.

SECOND READING                           1 Cor 7:29-31

The world we see is passing away.

From the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to the
Christians of Corinth

Brothers and sisters,

Time has become short.
Therefore let those who have wives ,
be as though they had them not;
those who weep as if they did not weep;
those who rejoice as if they were not rejoicing;
those who buy as if they did not become owners.
In short those who deal with earthly things should not be absorbed in them;
for the world we see is passing away.

Verse for the Gospel               Mk. 1, 15

Alleluia.
The Kingdom of God is at hand;
Repent and believe in the Good News.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                       Mk. 1, 14-20

Repent and believe in the Good News.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark

After John had been taken prisoner,
Jesus went to Galilee
and proclaimed God’s Good News there.
He said:
“The time is fulfilled and the Kingdom of God is at hand;
Repent and believe in the Good News.”

Once when Jesus was walking along the Sea of Galilee,
He saw Simon and Simon’s brother, Andrew,
as they were busy casting out the net into the lake;
for they were fishermen.
Jesus spoke to them:
“Come, follow Me;
I will make you fishers of men.”
Immediately they abandoned their nets and followed Him.

Going a little further, He saw James, the son of Zebedee
and his brother John;
they too were in the boat preparing their nets.
Immediately He called them.
They left their father Zebedee
with the day labourers in the boat
and followed Him.

Laudato Si

Encyclic of

POPE FRANCIS

On caring for the common home

173. There is an urgent need to establish international treaties, bearing in mind that local bodies are too weak to intervene effectively. Relations between states must safeguard the sovereignty of each, but also establish pathways agreed upon to avoid local catastrophes that would ultimately harm all. Global regulatory frameworks are needed that impose obligations and prevent unacceptable actions, such as powerful nations shifting waste and highly polluting industries onto others.
