Consideration
The readers of James’ letter seem more in need of revival than a warning against certain forms of (charismatic) enthusiasm, as, for example, with the Corinthians. The message seems to be “stand firm” and “endure the trial”. If you can’t, don’t blame God, blame yourself: man’s imperfection makes him weak and small”. These are the author’s sober remarks: perhaps they were addressed to second-generation Christians, who need affirmation and no longer expect an imminent end of the world.
FIRST READING James 1:12-18
God tempts no one.
From the letter of the holy apostle James
Brothers and sisters,
Blessed is the man who stands firm in tribulation.
If he endures the tribulation
then he will receive the garland of life
which God has promised to those who love him.
No one in temptation can say:
“I am tempted by God”.
God tempts no one,
nor can He Himself be tempted by evil.
When anyone is tempted ,
it is always
by the attraction of his own desire.
Then, when desire is fertilised, it gives birth to sin,
it gives birth to sin
and sin, once grown, gives birth to death.
Beloved brothers and sisters,
do not be deceived:
Every good gift, every perfect gift comes from above,
from the Father of the heavenly lights,
with whom there is no change or darkening through disorder.
By his own will he has given us life
Through the word of truth,
so that we are in a sense the firstfruits among his creatures.

Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees
and from the leaven of Herod.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark
At that moment, the disciples had forgotten to bring bread.
So they had only one loaf in the boat.
Then Jesus gave them this warning
“Be careful,
beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.
And the leaven of Herod”.
They discussed this among themselves:
“He says this because we have no bread”.
But He noticed and spoke:
“What are you discussing among yourselves there?
“That I say this because you have no bread?
“Do you still not understand?
“Is your mind so blind?
“You have eyes: do you not see?
“You have ears: do you not hear?
“And do you not remember
how many baskets full of clods you gathered
when I broke those five loaves for the five thousand?”
They answered him :
“Twelve.
“And how many baskets full of loaves did you gather ,
when with those seven for four thousand?”
And they answered :
“Seven.”
Then He said to them

196. What is the place of politics? Let us recall the principle of subsidiarity, which gives freedom for the development of capacities, present at all levels, but at the same time demands greater responsibility for the common good from those who have more power. It is true that today some economic sectors have more power than the states themselves, but an economy without politics cannot be justified: it would not be able to promote a different logic that could address the different aspects of the current crisis. The logic that leaves no room for a genuine concern for the environment is equivalent to a logic in which there is no room for a concern for the most vulnerable, because “in the prevailing model of ‘success’ and ‘private law’ it seems to make no sense to invest in ensuring that those who are left behind, the weak or the less gifted, can find their way in life”.
