Consideration

Abraham is old. He has no children, but he continues to wait and believe in the God of the Alianza. Abraham becomes the father of many nations. What seems almost dead is now alive. Dios wants man to live. The birth of Isaac is the sign of this. La vejez y la muerte no impiden a Dios dar vida. Dios has the future in his hands. Jesús joins the Alianza that Dios gave to Abraham. He frees the struggle against death. He turns death into a pasaje to eternal and true life. For those who believe in Him: ¡el futuro se abre!

FIRST READING                    Gen 17:3-9

Thou shalt become the father of a multitude of nations.

From the Book of Genesis

At that time Abram threw himself to the ground,
and God said to him, “This is my covenant with you:
Thou shalt become the father of a multitude of nations.
“Thou shalt no longer be called Abram ;
thy name shall be Abraham,
for I will make thee the father of a multitude of nations.
“I will make thee very fruitful,
nations will I make of thee,
even kings shall come forth from thee.
“I will make a covenant with you and your descendants,
generation after generation,
an everlasting covenant :
I will be your God and the God of your descendants,
“All of Canaan, the land where you now dwell as strangers,
I will give to you and your descendants
to possess it forever ,
and I will be their God.”
Further, God still said to Abraham :
“Thou for thy part

Furthermore, God still said to Abraham :
“You on your part must keep my covenant ,
thou and thy descendants, generation after generation.”

INTERLUDIUM                 Ps. 105 (104), 4-5, 6-7, 8-9

For ever his covenant remains in force.

Abide in God, in his mighty arm,
always keep seeking His Face.
Never forget the miracles He did,
His signs and His promises.

Ye offspring of His servant Abraham,
ye sons of Jacob, his beloved.
The Lord, He is our only God,
what He decrees applies to all the earth.

For ever and ever His covenant remains in force,
which He has promised for a thousand generations.
The covenant He made with Abraham before,
the oath He once swore to Isaac.

VERS FOR THE Gospel                     cf Lk 8:15

Blessed are those who keep the word they heard
keep in a good and noble heart
and bring forth fruit
by their steadfastness.

of whom thou sayest :
He is our God.
“Yet ye know Him not.
“I, on the other hand, know Him
And if I said that I do not know Him
I would be like unto thee : A liar.
“But I know Him and keep His word.
“Abraham, thy father rejoiced for joy
At the thought that he would see my day :
He saw it and rejoiced.”
Then the Jews said to Him :
“Thou art not yet fifty years old
and Thou hast seen Abraham?”
Jesus answered them :
“Verily, verily, I say unto thee :
for Abraham was I.”
Toe they picked up stones to stone Him
but Jesus withdrew and left the temple.

GOSPEL                          Jn 8:51-59

Abraham, your father rejoiced for joy at the thought of seeing my day.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John

At that time, Jesus said to the Jews :
“Verily, verily, I say unto you :
If anyone keeps my word
he shall not see death for ever.”
Then the Jews said to Him :
“Now we know for certain that thou art possessed of the devil.
“For Abraham and the prophets died ,
while Thou claims :
If anyone keeps my word
he shall not taste death for ever.
“Art Thou sometimes greater than our father Abraham
Who did die ?
“Even the prophets have died.
“For whom do Thou hold Thyself?”
Jesus replied :
“If I glorify Myself then my glory is nothing ;
but it is My Father who glorifies Me,
of whom thou sayest :

POPE FRANCIS

On caring for the common home

The sacramental sign and the celebration of rest

233. The universe develops in God, who fills the whole. So there is a mystery to be beheld in a leaf, in a path, in the dew, in the face of a poor person. The ideal is not just to go from outwardness to inwardness to discover the action of God in the soul, but to come to meet Him in all things, as St Bonaventure taught, “Contemplation is all the more sublime the more man feels in himself the effect of divine grace, or the more he knows how to recognise God in the other creatures”.
