Invitation
May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.
Available every day.
Consideration
Unlike yesterday, here the name ‘servant’ should be applied to the prophet himself. Like Moses and Jeremiah, he is called and given a mission. Like Moses and Jeremiah, he toils in vain, is not heard and turns to God complaining. But like them, he perseveres because Yahweh is with him. He will achieve his ‘goal’, whether one sees this as a deliverance from exile or a moral-religious renewal or both together. In any case, his action reaches to the ends of the earth. The early Christians and also the liturgy to this day apply this to the Christ event.
FIRST READING Isa 49:1-6
I will make you a light to the Gentiles, so that my salvation will go to the ends of the earth.
The shuddering of Jesus has already been mentioned
From the Prophet Isaiah
Ye islands, listen to me!
Prick up your ears, distant peoples!
From the mother’s womb the Lord has called me,
He has called my name from my mother’s womb.
He has made my mouth a sharp-edged sword
and sheltered me with the shadow of his hand.
He has made me a pointed arrow
and secured me in His quiver.
He has said to me :
“My servant art thou,
Israel, through whom I am going to find My glory.”
But I said :
“Fruitlessly I toiled,
my strength perished in emptiness and wind,
yet the Lord administers my justice,
and my reward comes from God.”
Now, however, the Lord has spoken,
who formed me from my mother’s womb into His servant
To bring Jacob back to Him
and save Israel from destruction.
I stand with the Lord in honour
and my God is my strength.
He has said to me :
“Thou art not only my servant
to raise up Jacob’s tribes
and to bring back the spared of Israel.
“I now also make thee a light unto the Gentiles ,
so that my salvation may go to the borders of the earth.”
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 71(70), 1-2, 3-4a, 5-6ab, 15, 17
I will praise Your justice.
To You, Lord, do I take refuge,
never disappoint me.
Thou art just, save and deliver me,
listen and come to my aid.
Be to me a refuge, a safe place ;
my rock and my fortress thou hast always been.
Deliver me, my God, from the hands of sinners.
For Thou, my God, art my expectation,
my hope art Thou, Lord, since my earliest youth.
From the mother’s womb I have leaned on Thee,
Thou art my protector since my birth.
I will praise Thy justice,
Thy assistance all day long.
From childhood I have experienced it,
and even now I praise Your deeds.
VERSE FOR THE GOSPEL
Do we pay homage to our King.
Obedient to the Father
He was taken away to the cross,
like an unsuspecting lamb led to the slaughter.
GOSPEL Jn 13:21-33,36-38
One of you will deliver Me up. Before the cock crows
you will have denied Me three times.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John
At that time when Jesus was at table with His disciples
He was moved and affirmed :
“Verily, verily, I say unto you :
one of you will deliver Me up.”
The disciples looked at each other,
uncertain who He meant.
One of the disciples,
the one who was loved by Jesus,
lay close to Jesus.
Simon Peter gave him a sign and asked him :
“Who does He mean?”
Then this one leaned against Jesus’ chest and said :
“Lord, who is it?”
Jesus replied :
“It is he
to whom I will give the piece of bread I am about to dip.”
Having dipped the piece of bread
He handed it to Judas Iscariot.
And when Judas had accepted it
Satan entered into him.
Jesus said to him :
“What thou hast to do
do it quickly.”
But none of those lying by
understood why He said this to him.
Because Judas held the purse,
some believed Jesus was instructing him :
Buy what we need for the feast,
or that he should give something to the poor.
When he had accepted the piece of bread
he left immediately.
It was night.
After his departure, Jesus said :
“Now the Son of Man is glorified
And God is glorified in Him.
“If God is glorified in Him
God will also glorify Him in Himself ,
yes, He will soon glorify Him.
“Little children, only a little while longer will I be with you.
“Ye shall seek Me, and as I said unto the Jews :
Where I go ye cannot come ,
so now I say to you.
Simon Peter said to Him :
“Lord, where art thou going?”
Jesus answered him in reply :
“Where I am going you cannot follow Me now,
later you can.”
Peter asked Him :
“Lord, why can I not follow Thee at once?
“My life I will give for Thee.”
Jesus replied:
“Thy life wilt thou give for Me ?
“Verily, verily, I say unto thee :
Before the cock crows
thou shalt have denied Me thrice.”

Encyclic of
POPE FRANCIS
On the care of the common home
The Trinity and the relationship between creatures
238. The Father is the ultimate source of everything, loving and sharing foundation of all that exists. The Son, reflecting Him and through whom everything was created, united with this earth when He assumed human form in Mary’s womb. The Spirit, infinite bond of love, is intimately present in the heart of the universe, animating and awakening to new ways. The world was created by the three Persons as one divine principle, but each of them accomplishes this common work according to their own personal identity. Therefore, “we should praise all the Trinity, when we look with admiration on the universe in its grandeur and beauty”.
