Thursday in Easter week

The Lord is truly risen

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day

Consideration
In each of the gospels, Jesus appears to the disciples. It is not so easy to think the resurrection, even his own disciples doubt it. Jesus’ appearances are meant to convince them each time, but now they also take on an extra dimension, which is the mission of his followers. Around word and bread, they will gather people; people who are amazed or perplexed, people who doubt, hope or despair. This is how the Church will set out, listening to the Scriptures and gathering around bread and a cup. In her midst the Lord will come present each time and greet her: ‘Peace be unto you’.

FIRST READING                     Acts 3:11-26

You killed the prince of life. Yet God raised Him from the dead.

From the Acts of the Apostles

In those days, when the paralytic who had been healed
clung to Peter and John,
all the people ran around them in amazement
in the Colonnade of Solomon.
When Peter saw this he addressed the word to the people :
“Men of Israel,
why dost thou marvel at this,
and why do you stare at us
as if by our own strength or piety
that this man walks?
“The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,
the God of our fathers
hath glorified his servant Jesus,
whom thou hast delivered up
and denied before Pilate
Though the latter had judged
Him to be set at liberty.
“But ye have denied the Holy and Righteous One
and asked as a favour the release of a murderer.
“The Prince of life, on the other hand, ye have slain.
“Yet God raised Him from the dead ;
of this we are witnesses.
“Because of faith in His Name
His Name has again given strength
to this man whom thou seest and knowest.

“The faith
granted by Him,
has given the man that flawlessness of limb
in the sight of you all.
“But I know, brethren,
that ye have acted in ignorance,
as well as your governments.
“But what God had announced beforehand
by the mouth of all the prophets,
– that His Messiah would die, –
hath He thus fulfilled.
“Repent therefore, and repent,
that your sins may be blotted out,
and that from the Lord there may come
times of refreshing may come,
and He may send you Jesus
who was destined for you as Messiah.
“Heaven was to take Him up
until the time of the restoration of all things ,
of which God has spoken
through His holy prophets since ancient times.
“Moses after all has said :
A prophet like me
will the Lord our God raise up for you
from among your brethren.
“To Him you must listen
In all that He shall say unto you,
and whoever does not listen to that prophet
shall be exterminated from among the people.
“And all the prophets,
all who have spoken since Samuel and his successors,
have also prophesied these days.
“Ye are the sons of the prophets
and of the covenant which God made with your fathers ,
when He said to Abraham :
In thy seed
shall all the generations of the earth be blessed.
“For you in the first place
God has raised up His servant ,
and sent Him to bless you
by turning every one of you away from his wickedness.”

INTERLUDIUM              Hymn Ps. 8, 2a, 5, 6-7, 8-9

Lord, our Lord,
how awesome is your Name on earth!

Or: Alleluia.

Lord, our Lord,
how awe-inspiring is your Name on earth!
Ah, what is man then, that Thou dost look upon him,
The child of man, that Thou dost so care for him?

Not much less than an angel hast Thou created him,
clothed him with beauty and splendour;
all Thy creation subject to him,
laid all things at his feet:

Cattle and sheep everywhere,
also the wild beasts in the fields ;
birds in the sky and fish in the sea,
all that teems in the oceans.

ALLELUIA                Ps. 118(117), 24

Alleluia.
This is the day, which the Lord has made,
we will celebrate it in joy.
Alleluia.

SEQUENCE

Let us praise the Lamb of Easter,
Honour the Lamb of God with sacrifices.
Yes the Lamb saves the sheep,
Christ by his innocence brings
Us poor sinners to the Father.
Death and life, O miracle,
must fight together.
He who died, He lives, He is our King.
Tell us, Mary,
what is it that thou hast seen?
The tomb of Christ that was empty,
the glory of Him who is risen,
angels as witnesses,
the sweatcloth and the shroud.
My hope, my Christ alive!
Behold He goes before you to Galilee.
Truly Christ is risen : Risen from the dead.
O King, our Hero, give us peace. Alleluia.

GOSPEL                     Lk. 24, 35-48

Thus the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

At that time the disciples told what had happened on the road
and how Jesus was recognised by them
at the breaking of bread.
As they talked about this
He Himself suddenly stood in their midst
and said :
“Peace be unto you.”
In their bewilderment and terror, they thought they saw a ghost.
But He spoke to them :
“Why are you dismayed
and why does doubt arise in thy heart ?
“Look at my hands and feet :
It is I Myself.
“Touch Me and look :
A spirit has no flesh and bones
As ye see that I have.”
And having thus spoken
He showed them His hands and feet.
When they could not believe it for joy and amazement
He said to them :
“Do you have anything to eat here?”
They reached out to Him a piece of roasted fish ;
He took it and ate it before their eyes.
He spoke to them :
“These are My words ,
which I spoke to you while I was still with you :
Everything must be fulfilled
what is written about Me in the Law of Moses,
in the prophets and in the psalms.”
Then He made their minds accessible
to understanding the scriptures.
He told them :
“This is how the scriptures speak of the suffering and death of the Messiah
and about His resurrection from the dead on the third day,
about the proclamation among all nations,
of the repentance and forgiveness of sins in His Name.
“Beginning with Jerusalem, ye must bear witness to all this.
“Therefore I send unto you that which is promised by my Father ;
abide therefore in the city
until thou shalt be equipped with strength from on high.”
Now He led them out as far as Bethany ;
He lifted up His hands and blessed them.
And while He was blessing them He removed Himself from them
And He was taken up into heaven.
They worshipped Him
and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
They kept themselves constantly in the temple
and they glorified God.

Seventh chapter Prayers

246. After this long joyful yet dramatic reflection, I propose two prayers, one that all of us who believe in a creative, omnipotent God may share, and another, that we Christians may take on the obligations to creation that the Gospel of Jesus sets before us.
