Thursday – St Stanislaus, bishop and martyr

Saint Stanislaus, patron of Poland, was a bishop and martyr. He was born in 1030,
and murdered by King Boleslaw II in 1079, he was Sanctified  in 1253.

Invitation

May I hereby call your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wishes to share with you the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening his heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Consideration
The apostles are accused by the high priests. They do not abide by the prohibition against preaching, and in substance they continue to accuse the authorities of having carried out the murder of Jesus. Peter answers the accusations, but formally affirms that they will not obey except to God. Faith in Jesus, in his death and resurrection will require sacrifices: also from us. Are we prepared to do so?

FIRST  READING                 Acts 5, 27-33
To all this we are witnesses, but also the Holy Spirit.

From the Acts of the Apostles

In those days the servants of the commander took the apostles and brought them before the Sanhedrin. The high priest began to question them, “Did we not expressly forbid you to teach in the Name of Jesus? By thy doing all Jerusalem is full of thy teaching. Moreover, you want to charge us with the blood of that man.” But Peter and the other apostles replied, “One must obey God more than men. The God of our fathers raised Jesus to life, to Whom you have transgressed by striking Him on the cross. God exalted Him as Guide and Savior at His right hand to grant repentance and remission of sins to Israel. Of all this we are witnesses, as well as the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.” When they heard this they ignited in anger and decided to kill them.

Interludium           Ps. 34(33), 2, 9, 17-18, 19-20

Those cry out in distress, to them the Lord listens.
Alleluia

The Lord I will praise every day,
His praise is ever on my lips.
Observe and notice how gracious the Lord is,
Happy is he who seeks salvation in Him.

From evildoers He turns His face away,
they are forgotten on earth.
To the pious who cry out the Lord listens
And rescues them from every need.

The Lord is near to grieving hearts,
He helps those who acknowledge their guilt.
Many calamities will threaten the pious,
from each one the Lord saves him.

Alleluia

Alleluia
He who called everything into existence
And took care of us, his people,
He is risen, Christ the Lord!
Alleluia

Gospel                                 John 3, 31-36
The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in His hands.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John

At that time Jesus said to Nicodemus, “He who is from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks the language of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all. He bears witness to what He saw and heard, yet no one accepts His testimony. He who does accept His testimony thereby seals that God is true. For He who is sent by God speaks God’s own words: so immoderately God bestows His Spirit. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in His hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. He who refuses to believe in the Son will not see life; on the contrary, the wrath of God remains on him.”

APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION LAUDATE DEUM

FROM THE HOLY FATHER
POPE FRANCISCUS

TO ALL PEOPLE
OF GOOD WILL

The global climate crisis

5. No matter how much people try to deny, hide
hide, obfuscate or downplay them, they are becoming increasingly apparent. No one
can deny the fact that in recent years we have witnessed extreme
weather phenomena, frequent periods of unusual heat, drought and other
cries of protest from the side of the earth that are but a few tangible manifestations of a silent
disease that affects everyone. Granted, not every concrete catastrophe may be
attributed to global climate change. Nevertheless, it is arguable that
certain human-induced climate changes significantly
of increasingly frequent and intense extreme events. For example, we know that every
time the earth’s temperature increases by 0.5°C, the intensity and frequency of heavy
rains and floods increase in some areas, and of severe droughts elsewhere;
extreme heat waves will occur in some places and heavy snowfall in yet
others. If we can already have several heat waves a year now, what will happen
if the global temperature rises by 1.5° C, and that’s where it’s headed. These
heat waves will be much more frequent and severe. Should the temperature rise above
degrees, then the ice sheets of Greenland and much of Antarctica  will
melt completely, with very serious consequences for everyone.
