Tuesday – Saint Pius V, pope

Pius V was born Anthony Ghislierie on 17/1/1504.
He was pope from 1566 until his death on 1/5/1572 in Rome.

Invitation

May I draw your attention to
the daily Gospel reading
This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
of the gospel. Everyone, without exception
can experience this joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of the Word of God.
Available every day

Consideration

The reading is thought-provoking. How fickle is the human heart. Jesus is triumphantly received in Jerusalem and crucified a few days later. Paul and Barnabas are worshipped as gods by the mob and stoned to death some time later. The servant is no better than the master. How close glory and reproach are, but the apostles do not desire glory. The great message of the whole missionary journey is communicated to the community on their return. He has opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.

FIRST READING                          Acts 14:19-28

They told of all that God had accomplished with their cooperation.

From the Acts of the Apostles

In those days Jews came from Antioch and Ikonium
and rebuked the people.
Therefore they stoned Paul
and dragged him out of the city
believing he was dead.
But when the disciples gathered around him, he straightened up and returned to his place.
He straightened up and returned to the city.
The next day, he left with Barnabas for Derbe.
And when they had preached the gospel in that city
and had won many disciples,
they returned to Lystra, Ikonium and Antioch.
There they confirmed the disciples in their good state,
they exhorted them to persevere in the faith
and they said that through many tribulations
into the kingdom of God.
In every congregation
after praying and fasting, elders appointed for them
and commended them to the Lord
in whom they now believed.
They travelled through Pisidia as far as Pamphylia,
preached the word in Perga
and came to Attalia.
There they embarked for Antioch
From there,
entrusted to the grace of God,
they had set out for the work they had done.
After their arrival, they called the congregation together
and told everyone
what God had accomplished with their cooperation,
and how He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.
They spent some time there with the disciples.

INTERLUDIUM                Ps. 145(144), 10-11, 12-13ab, 21

Your works, O Lord
make known to men your power.

O : Alleluia.

Your works shall praise You, O Lord,
Thy godly ones shall praise thee.
They praise the glory of Your rule,
they proclaim Your power.
They make Your power known to men,
the splendour of Your kingdom.
Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages
Your kingdom is for all generations.
My mouth sings the praises of the LORD
and every living creature praises his name forever.

ALLELUIA            H John 10:14

Alleluia.
I am the good shepherd, says the Lord.
I know mine and mine know me.

Alleluia.

GOSPEL                            Jn 14:27-31a

My peace I give to you.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to

John

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:
“Peace I leave with you
My peace I give to you.
“Not as the world gives, I give to you.
“Let not your hearts be troubled and let not your hearts be troubled.
“You have heard Me say:
I am going away, but I am coming back to you.
“If you loved Me
you would rejoice that I am going to the Father
for the Father is greater than me.
“Now, before it happens I tell you, so that when it happens you believe.
So that when it happens, you believe.
“I will not speak much to you now
for the prince of the world is coming.
“Truly, he cannot do anything against Me,
but the world must know that I love the Father
and that I do what He has instructed Me to do.

Rethinking our use of power

24. Not every increase in power means progress for humanity. It is enough to

Just think of the “admirable” technologies used to decimate populations, drop atomic bombs and destroy ethnic groups.

to decimate populations, drop nukes and destroy ethnic groups.

destruction. There have been times in history when our admiration for progress blinded us to the horror of progress.

blinded us to the horror of its consequences. But that risk is always present,

because “our immense technological development has not been accompanied by a development of responsibility

development of human responsibility, values and conscience…. We are

exposed to our ever-increasing power without the means to control it.

To exercise control. We have certain superficial mechanisms at our disposal,

but we cannot claim to have solid ethics, culture and spirituality that are truly capable of setting boundaries.

spirituality that are truly capable of setting boundaries and clear self-control.

learning”. It is no wonder that such a great power in such hands is capable of destroying life

destroy, while the mentality inherent in the technocratic paradigm blinds us, blinds us and does not allow us to see

blinds us and does not allow us to see this very serious problem of humanity today.
