Thursday – Ascension of the Lord

Jesus Christ ascended to God, his heavenly Father

Invitation

May I draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel
This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
of the Gospel. Everyone, without exception
can experience this joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of the Word of God.
Available every day
Opening Word
Forty days after Easter
we hear how Jesus says goodbye to his disciples.
But his ascension does not mean
that he leaves his disciples for good.
From now on, Jesus is exalted at the right hand of God.
As God himself, he can be very close to us.
So today we celebrate his new
Today we celebrate his new presence among us.
He continues to speak to us,
he always renews our hope
and urges us forward.
FIRST READING Acts 1:1-11
The Lord was lifted up before them.
From the Acts of the Apostles
My first book, Theophylact, I wrote
about everything Jesus did and taught up to the day He gave His commission to the apostles.
When He gave His commission to the apostles
whom He had chosen by the Holy Spirit,
and on which He was taken up into heaven.
After His death, He showed them by many proofs
That He was alive.
He appeared to them for forty days
and spoke to them about the Kingdom of God.
While He ate with them
He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem
but to wait for the promise of the Father
which, he said, you have heard from me:
“John baptised with water ,
but you will in a few days
you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit”.
When they were gathered together
they asked him:
“Lord, will you at this time return the kingdom to Israel?”.
But he answered them
“It is not for you to know the day and hour
which the Father has in his power.
But you will receive power
from the Holy Spirit who will come upon you
so that you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem
throughout Judea and Samaria
and to the ends of the earth”.
After these words
he was lifted up before their eyes
and a cloud hid him from their eyes.
As they watched his ascension tensely ,
suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them and said:
“Men of Galilee,
what are you looking at heaven?
This Jesus who was taken up into heaven before you
will return in the same way
as you have seen him go to heaven”.
RESPONSORIAL                 Psalm 47(46), 2-3, 6-7, 8-9
Refrain
God ascends the throne under great cheers,
the Lord with trumpets.
All nations, clap your hands
Rejoice before God with shouts of joy.
For great is the Lord and formidable on all sides,
a mighty prince over all the earth.
God ascends the throne under loud cheers,
the Lord with trumpet blasts.
Sing now to God, let your song resound,
to our King a song of praise!
God is king over all the earth
sing to him a psalm.
King is God over all nations
seated on his holy throne.
SECOND READING Ephesians 1:17-23
God has set him at his right hand in heaven.
From the holy apostle Paul’s letter to the Christians in
Ephesus
Brothers and sisters,
I pray to the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of glory,
that He may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation
That you may truly know Him.
May He enlighten your inner eye
to see
how great is the hope to which He calls you
how rich is the glory of your inheritance
in the midst of the saints
and how great is His power in us believers.
The same power and might that He showed in Christ
when He raised him from the dead
and set him at his right hand in heaven,
above all dominions,
powers and might and highnesses, and above every name that is called
and above every name that is called,
not only in this age, but also in the age to come.
God has put all things under His feet,
and He Himself exalted above all things,
He has as His Head the Church
which is His body
the fullness of Him who fulfils all in all.
Gospel verse         Mt 28, 19a.20
Alleluia.
Go and make all nations my disciples
says the Lord;
I am with you always, until the consummation of the world.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mt 28:16-20
To me has been given all power in heaven and on earth.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew
At that time the eleven disciples went away into Galilee
To the mountain Jesus had pointed out to them.
When they saw Him
they fell down in worship;
Some, however, doubted.
Jesus came and spoke to them
“To me has been given all power in heaven and on earth.
Go therefore and make all nations my disciples and baptise them
And baptize them
in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
and teach them to observe all that I have commanded you.
“Behold, I am with you
all days until the end of the age”.

APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION LAUDATE DEUM
FROM THE HOLY FATHER
PAUS FRANCISCO
TO ALL PEOPLE
OF GOOD WILL
33. In conscience and in view of the children who will pay for the harm their deeds will cause, the question of the meaning of life inevitably arises.
In conscience, and in view of the children who will pay for the harm their actions will cause, the question inevitably arises about the meaning: ‘What is the meaning of my life?
What is the meaning of my time on this earth? And what is the ultimate meaning of all my work and effort?
Of all my work and effort”?
