Tuesday – Saint Mattias, apostle

Substitute for Judas, who was unfaithful to him.
Appointed by lot. Added to the group of 11 apostles.

Invitation

I would like to draw your attention to
The daily reading of the Gospel
This invitation wants to share the joy of the Gospel with you.
of the gospel. Everyone, without exception
can experience this joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of the Word of God.
Available every day.
Consideration
The apostles chose Mattias to replace Judas only after a sincere prayer to the Holy Spirit. That prayer to the Holy Spirit is called “discernment”. It is a process that requires much wisdom and deliberation. The apostles chose Mattias because they believed he was truly a disciple of the Lord in word and deed. The Lord himself chose Matthias because he was “a friend”. That is, he loved the Lord. Perhaps that is the highest standard of discipleship: loving the Lord with heart and soul.
First reading            Acts 1:15-17,20-26
Fate struck Mattathias.
He was added to the group of 11 apostles.
From the Acts of the Apostles
In those days Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren.
– There was a group
of about one hundred and twenty people gathered – and he spoke
and he spoke:
“Men and brethren ,
the word of Scripture was to be fulfilled
which the Holy Spirit by the mouth of David
had spoken beforehand concerning Judas,
who became the guide
of those who imprisoned Jesus.
He belonged to our number
and had received his share of this ministry.
After all, it is written in the book of Psalms:
His dwelling place became a wilderness
And no one dwelt there any more;
And also:
Another took his office.
So one of the men
who belonged to our company
during the time that the Lord Jesus was among us,
from the baptism of John
until the day He was taken away from us,
to become with us witnesses of His resurrection”.
Two were introduced:
Joseph, also called Barabbas, nicknamed Justus,
and Matthias.
They then prayed as follows:
“You, Lord, who know all hearts ,
appoint the one You have chosen from among these two
to take his place in this ministry and apostleship
Who was unfaithful to Judas
to go to his own place.
Then they cast lots and the lot fell on Matthias.
He was added to the group of 11 apostles.
Interludium               Ps. 113(112), 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8
The Lord places the weak
in the midst of the mighty among his people.
Alleluia
Glorify, you servants of the Lord
Glorify the name of the Lord.
Praise the name of the Lord
today and forever.
From sunrise to sunset
all should worship that Name.
For the Lord enthrones above the nations,
His glory reigns over the heavens.
Who is like the Lord our God
Who sits high above the stars?
Who rules on high
The firmament and the earth.
Who lifts the powerless from the dust
Out of the rubbish heaps he brings the poor;
To place them in the circle of princes,
In the midst of the mighty among his people.
Alleluia                    John 15:16
You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you.
Alleluia.
I have chosen you
and I have commissioned you to go on your way
and bear fruit that is lasting.
Alleluia.
Gospel                         Jn 15:9-17
You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John
At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:
“As the Father has loved Me
so I have loved you.
Abide in my love.
If you keep my commandments
you will abide in my love
As I have kept my Father’s commandments.
Remain in His love.
This I tell you
so that my joy may be in you
and your joy may be perfect.
This is my commandment
That you love one another as I have loved you.
Greater love no one can have than this
That he gives his life for his friends.
You are my friends if you do what I command you.
I no longer call you servants
for a servant does not know what his master does.
But I have called you friends
because I have told you all that I have heard from the Father.
You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you and I have entrusted you to be My friends.
And I have commissioned you to go on a journey
and bear fruit that is lasting.
Then the Father will give you
whatever you ask for in My name.
This is My commandment,
That you love one another”.
