Consideration
Today’s gospel does not offer an easy recipe that is quickly prepared. From those who want to translate it into concrete actions, it simply requires all or nothing. At the same time, we know that it is impossible to live evangelically and follow Jesus purely in our own strength. Even if we renounce everything, even if we were to give away all possessions, we are still unable to save ourselves and enter the kingdom of God. Only God Himself can do that. Yet this should not discourage us because: Jesus looked lovingly at the rich young man. It is with this look that He also looks at us, at the people we live with, but also at those we don’t like so much, at those with whom we live in quarrels. What does such a thing do to me?

FIRST READING                      I Pet 1:3-9

Thou believest in Christ though thou seest Him not ;
how inexpressible
be thy joy
when thou attainest the final goal of thy faith.

From the first letter of the holy apostle Peter

Brothers and sisters,

Blessed is God,
the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who in his great mercy
caused us to be reborn to a life of hope
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
An imperishable, immortal, untouchable inheritance
is reserved for you in heaven.
In God’s strength secured in faith
ye wait for salvation, which is already prepared
to be revealed at the end of time.
Then ye shall rejoice,
even though now if it must be so
suffer all kinds of trials for a short time.
But these are necessary
to prove the soundness of thy faith,
thy faith, which is so much more precious than perishable gold
which is nevertheless also purified by fire.
Then, when Jesus Christ reveals Himself
praise, glory and honour will be your portion.
You love Him without ever having seen Him.
In Him you believe, even though you cannot see Him now.
How unspeakable, how heavenly will be your joy
when ye reach the final goal of your faith,
the salvation of thy soul.

INTERLUDIUM             Ps. 111(110), 1-2, 5-6, 9, 10c

Always the Lord remembers his covenant.
Alleluia.

To the Lord I give thanks from all my heart,
in the midst of the pious, for all the congregation.
Great is all that He performs,
captivating the attention of all who contemplate it.

Food He gives to those who worship Him,
always remembering His covenant.
He showed His people the power of His deeds
and gave them possession of the pagan land.

He brought redemption to His people,
made His covenant with them forever;
holy and highly honoured is His Name,
for ever praising Him.

ALLELUIA               II Cor. 5, 19

Alleluia.
It was God
who in Christ reconciled the world to Himself,
and He gave us the message of reconciliation.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                 Mk. 10, 17-27

Go sell what you possess and give it to the poor.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark

At that time Jesus was making his way
and someone came running
who threw himself on his knees before Him and asked :
“Good Master,
What must I do to obtain eternal life?”
Jesus replied :
“Why do you call Me good?
“No one is good but God alone.
“Ye know the commandments :
Thou shalt not kill,
thou shalt not commit adultery,
thou shalt not steal,
thou shalt not bear false witness,
thou shalt not wrong anyone,
honour thy father and thy mother.”
He answered Him :
“All this I have maintained from my childhood.”
Then Jesus looked lovingly at him and spoke :
“One thing you lack ;
go and sell what you possess and give it to the poor,
with that you will possess treasure in heaven,
and then come back to follow Me.”
This word dismayed the man and dismayed he went away
because he possessed many goods.
Then Jesus let his gaze pass over his disciples and said to them :
“How difficult it is for those who have money
enter the kingdom of God!”
The disciples were amazed at what He said.
Therefore, Jesus repeated :
“Children ,
how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God.
“For a camel it is easier
to go through the eye of a needle
than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
Then they were even more perplexed and they said to each other :
“Who then can be saved?”
Jesus looked at them and said :
“This is not in the power of men but in the power of God :
for to God all things are possible.”

APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION LAUDATE DEUM

FROM THE HOLY FATHER
POPE FRANCISCUS

TO ALL PEOPLE
OF GOOD WILL

51. This conference in Egypt was another example of the difficulty of the
negotiations. One could say that it at least represented a step forward
represented a step forward in consolidating a system for financing “loss and damage” in
the countries most affected by climate disasters. This would seem to give a new voice and
a greater role for to developing countries. Yet even here, many points remained
vague, especially the concrete responsibility of countries to contribute.
