Consideration
A home, brothers, sisters, a father and a mother, children and fields: One does not leave it all behind just like that. Nor does Jesus ask us to scorn these precious parts of our lives so that we can give them up more easily. Nor is it that we would feel too little love towards them or be completely detached from our roots. So there must be another reason why the gospel reproduces such crass statements. What Jesus wants to make clear is this: In order to give up such important things, there must be something else that must be much more important, much greater than everything that is already so precious to us: We will get that back a hundredfold when we choose Jesus.
FIRST READING 1 Pet 1:10-16
The prophets prophesied about the grace meant for you.
Therefore be sober
and put all your hope in that grace.
From the first letter of the holy apostle Peter
Brothers and sisters,
Already the prophets have sought and thirsted
for the salvation of your souls,
when they prophesied of the grace destined for you.
They asked at what time and circumstances
the Spirit of Christ shared in them,
when He prophesied all the sufferings that would come upon Christ
and the subsequent glorification.
But it was revealed to them
that they were to administer this message for you
not for themselves.
And now that message has been by the mouth of the gospel preachers
openly proclaimed to you,
in the power of the Holy Spirit
which has been sent down from heaven.
These are secrets into which even angels long to penetrate.
Therefore, be awake and active,
be sober,
put all your hope in the grace
that will be yours when Jesus Christ will be revealed.
Give ear to the truth,
no longer give in to the lusts
which dominated your life in the time of your ignorance.
He who called you is holy.
Be holy like Him,
in all your conduct
for it is written :
“Be holy
for I am holy.”
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 98(97), 1, 2-3ab, 3c-4
His benefits the Lord made known to us.
Sing to the Lord a new song
Because He did wonders.
His hand asserted itself mightily,
the power of His holy arm.
His benefits He made known to us,
His justice to the nations.
Once again His goodness and faithfulness proved
in favour of Israel’s house.
All the earth beheld
What our God did for us.
Glorify the Lord, all nations,
be glad, rejoice and sing.
ALLELUIA 1 Petr. 1, 25
Alleluia.
The word of the Lord remains for ever ;
and this word is the message
proclaimed to you in the gospel.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mk. 10, 28-31
He who follows Me receives the hundredfold,
and in the world to come eternal life.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark
At that time Peter took the floor and said to Jesus :
“Behold, we have given up everything to follow You.”
Jesus replied :
“Verily, I say unto you :
There is no one who leaves home, brothers, sisters,
mother, father, children or fields
for My sake and for the Good News,
or he receives now, in this time, a hundredfold
of homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields,
be it also accompanied by persecutions,
and in the world to come eternal life.
“Many firsts will be lasts
and many last will be first.”

APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION LAUDATE DEUM
FROM THE HOLY FATHER
POPE FRANCISCUS
TO ALL PEOPLE
OF GOOD WILL
52. Today, we can continue to argue that “the agreements have been poorly implemented due to a lack of appropriate mechanisms for monitoring, periodic review and sanctions in cases of non-compliance. The principles they proclaimed still await an efficient and flexible way of practical implementation”. Also that “international negotiations cannot make significant progress because of positions taken by countries that put their national interests above the global common good. Those who will have to suffer the consequences of what we try to hide will not forget this lack of conscience and responsibility.”
