Wednesday – Saint Paul VI, pope

Paul VI was Pope from 1963 to 1978. He continued the
Second Vatican Cicilia of John XXIII.

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wishes to share with you the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Consideration
‘For all flesh is like grass and all its glory like a field flower’: it is a wonderful metaphor for baptism, our rebirth in Christ. Our first, human birth was the fruit of our parents’ love. Our rebirth is the fruit of God’s love, of his imperishable Word. To respond to the image of God is to love like God, to love like He loves us. It is an exhortation to love one another with genuine brotherly love, because we live in the same love for and with God.

FIRST READING               1 Peter 1:18-25

Ye are redeemed by the precious blood of Christ,
the lamb without spot or blemish.

From the first letter of the holy apostle Peter

Brothers and sisters,

Ye know that ye are not redeemed with perishable things
such as gold and silver be redeemed from the senseless existence
which ye had inherited from your fathers.
Thou art redeemed by the precious blood of Christ,
the lamb without spot or blemish,
who was chosen before the foundation of the world
but only appeared at the end of time
for your sake.
Through Him you believe in God,
Who raised Him from the dead
and has given Him glory ;
Therefore your faith in God is also hope in God.
Now that you have purified your soul
to accept the truth obediently
ye must love one another with sincere brotherly love,
with heart and fervour,
as men born again,
not of a perishable seed,
but by the imperishable word
of the living and eternal God.
For all flesh is like grass
and all its glory like a field flower.
The grass withers away,
the flower falls off
but the word of the Lord remains for ever.
And this word is the message
proclaimed to you in the gospel.

INTERLUDIUM             Ps. 147, 12-13, 14-15, 19-20

Now praise the Lord, Jerusalem!
or : Alleluia.

Praise now the Lord, Jerusalem !
Zion, glorify thy God!
For He has firmly locked your gates,
blessed thy sons within thy wall.

He lets you cultivate your fields in peace
And feed you with wheat flour.
He sends forth his command over the earth
and hastens his word.

It is he who sent Jacob his word,
His law and commandments for Israel.
Never was there a people He treated like this,
no other does He make His ways known.

ALLELUIA                 cf. Eph. 1, 17-18

Alleluia.
The God of our Lord Jesus Christ
May enlighten our inner eye,
to see how great is the hope
To which He calls us.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                Mk. 10, 32-45

We are now going to Jerusalem
where the Son of Man will be delivered up.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark

At that time the disciples went forth, on their way to Jerusalem
and Jesus went before them ;
they were dismayed
and also those following Him were fearful.
He again took the twelve aside
and began to speak to them about what would happen to Him :
“We are now going to Jerusalem
where the Son of Man
will be handed over to the high priests and scribes.
“They will condemn Him to death
and deliver Him to the Gentiles ;
They shall mock and spite Him,
scourge Him and kill Him,
but three days later He will rise.”
Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee,
came to him and said :
“Master, we want You to do for us what we ask You to do.”
He answered them :
“Then what do you want me to do for you?”
They said to Him :
“Grant that in thy glory one of us may be on thy right hand
and the other may sit at thy left hand.”
But Jesus said to them :
“Ye know not what ye ask.
“Are you able to drink the cup that I drink
and be baptised with the baptism
with which I am baptised?”
They answered Him :
“Yes, we can.”
“Indeed!
– admitted Jesus –
the cup which I drink ye shall drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptised
shall ye be baptised ;
but it is not for Me
to make thee sit on My right or left hand ,
because only they obtain this
for whom this is prepared.”
When the ten others heard this
they became angry with James and John.
Jesus, however, called them to Himself and spoke to them :
“You know that those who count as rulers of the nations
rule them with an iron fist
and that the great ones abuse their power over them.
“This may not be the case with ith you ;
whoever wants to become great among you
must be your servant,
and whoever wants to be first among you
must be the slave of all ,
for even the Son of Man
did not come to be served,
but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION LAUDATE DEUM

FROM THE HOLY FATHER
POPE FRANCISCUS

TO ALL PEOPLE
OF GOOD WILL

What can we expect from COP28 in Dubai?
53. The United Arab Emirates will host the next Conference of the
Parties (COP28). It is a country on the Persian Gulf known as a major
exporter of fossil fuels, although it has made significant investments in
renewable energy sources. Meanwhile, gas and oil companies there are planning
new projects, aiming to further increase their production. To say there is nothing to
to hope for would be suicide, as it would mean that all of humanity, especially the
poorest, be exposed to the worst consequences of climate change.
