Invitation

I would like to draw your attention to
The daily reading of the Gospel

This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
Of the Gospel. Everyone, without exception
can experience that joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of God’s Word.

Available every day

Consideration
Incessantly and in many ways, Jesus continues to urge detachment and sobriety. We should not cling to fleeting wealth and happiness, but seek our treasure in heaven. A treasure is something of the greatest value, something we pay attention to and value more than other things. Where that treasure is, there is also our heart. Does this mean we should give up our desires for earthly things, our longings and dreams? Not at all. We just need to give them their rightful place, and we can only do that if we identify which treasure is closest to our heart.

FIRST READING                      2 Kings 11, 1-4. 9-18.20
Joash was anointed king and everyone shouted, ‘Long live the king!

From the second book of Kings

When Athaliah, the mother of King Ahaziah,
discovered that her son was dead, she killed all the king’s descendants,
she killed all the king’s descendants.
But Joash, a son of King Ahaziah, was killed by Joash, a son of King Ahaziah,
was killed by Jehosheba,
daughter of King Joram and sister of Ahaziah,
secretly among the king’s sons
who were to be killed, taken away.
She kept him with his nurse
hidden in the bedroom from Athaliah;
Thus he was saved.
For six years he remained hidden with her in the temple of the Lord.
In the temple of the Lord,
while Athaliah ruled over the land.
In the seventh year, the priest Jozadak summoned
the hundred men of the Carians and the guard.
He made them appear before him in the temple of the Lord.
Then he showed them the king’s son.

The hundred men
The hundred men meticulously carried out the orders of Jehoiada the priest.
Each man led his men,
both those who were to appear on the Sabbath
and those who were to report on the Sabbath,
and reported to Jehoiada the priest.
He gave the hundred men
the spears and shields of King David
which were kept in the temple of the Lord.
The guard gathered man by man
with weapons in their hands,
from the right wing of the building to the left wing,
facing the altar and the building,
forming a circle.
Jojada then brought forward Joash, the king’s son,
put the diadem on him, handed him the charter,
appointed him king and anointed him.
The soldiers applauded and shouted:
‘Long live the king!
When Athaliah heard the cheers of the escort and of the people
in the temple of the Lord,
he went there.
And there he saw the king standing on the elevation according to custom,
surrounded by the commanders and the trumpeters
and all the people of the land
who cheered and blew the trumpet.
Then Athaliah tore her clothes and exclaimed:
‘Treason! Treason!’
Then Jehoiada, the priest, gave
To the hundred men,
the commanders of the army, he ordered:
‘Take her outside the cordon.
‘Kill with the sword anyone who follows her.’
Because the priest had said
that she was not to be killed in the temple of the Lord.
They took her prisoner
and when they had passed through the Horse Gate
they had reached the royal palace,
there they killed her.
Jojada made a pact
between the Lord, the king and the people,
which would make the people the Lord’s people again,
as well as between the king and the people.
Then the people of the land went to the temple of Baal ;
they destroyed its altars
they smashed the images
and killed the priest of Baal Mattan in front of the altars.
But the priest Jojada
set sentries before the temple of the Lord.

The people of the land rejoiced
and the city was silent.
Athaliah had been killed with the sword in the royal palace.

INTERLUDIUM       Ps. 132(131), 11, 12, 13-14, 17-18

God has chosen Zion
God has chosen Zion as his seat.

The Lord has sworn to David
an oath he will never break :
a descendant of thy posterity
I will exalt on your throne.

Keep your children to my covenant
to everything I impose on them,
then your children too
sit on your throne.

For God has chosen Zion
he has willed that it should be his seat :
here is forever my resting place
here I will dwell, this is my choice.

There for David a horn will spring up,
for my anointed one there shines a light;
I will put his enemies to shame
but he shall wear my crown of glory.

Alleluia           Ps. 25(4), 4c, 5a

Alleluia.
Lord, teach me your ways;
Lead me according to your word.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                            Mt 6:19-23
Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:
‘Do not gather for yourselves treasures on earth ,
where they are lost to the moth and the worm
and where thieves break in and steal;
Keep for yourselves treasures in heaven
where neither moth nor worm can destroy them
and where thieves do not break in and steal.
‘Where thy treasure is, there shall thy heart be also.

‘The lamp of the body is the eye.
‘When your eye is illuminated
your whole body will be enlightened.
‘On the other hand, if your eye is bad, your whole body will be dark,
then your whole body will be dark.
‘Therefore, if even your inner light is dark ,
how bad will the darkness be!’
