Introduction
Even if summer makes us a little happier
and the holidays put us in a good mood
the Bible readings challenge us to face the fragility of our lives.
To face the fragility of our lives.
The question is not avoided:
“Can we despite this anger
believe in life and keep hope?
This faith and hope are awakened in our hearts
when we come together as brothers and sisters
and take seats at the banquet God offers us.
Here our faith is nourished
that, in life and in death, we are never alone.
FIRST READING Wis. 1, 13-15; 2, 23-24
Through the envy of the devil, death has entered the world
From the book of Wisdom
God did not make death
and He takes no pleasure in the destruction of the living.
He created all things to live:
healthy are the creatures of the earth
there is no deadly poison in them
and the underworld has no power on earth,
for righteousness is immortal!
After all, God created man to be immortal,
He made him to reflect his own self.
But because of the devil’s envy, death came into the world,
and is endured by his followers.
Responsorial Psalm 30(29), 2 and 4, 5-6, 11.12a.13b
Refrain
I will praise you, O Lord, for you have redeemed me.
I will praise you, O Lord, for you have redeemed me,
you have not allowed my enemies to triumph.
Lord, from the kingdom of the dead you have delivered my soul,
You have delivered me from those who go to the grave.
Sing therefore with me to the Lord, all the pious
And thank His name, which is highly exalted.
His wrath lasts but a short time, but His mercy lasts a lifetime,
the evening brings weeping, the morning joy.
Lord, hear and have mercy on me,
My God, assist me with Your help.
You have turned my sad lament into a dance of joy.
I will praise You, O Lord my God, for ever and ever.
SECOND READING 2 Cor 8:7,9,13-15
May your generosity benefit your neighbour.
From the holy apostle Paul’s second letter to the Christians in Corinth
Brothers and sisters,
you already excel in many ways:
in faith, in eloquence, in knowledge,
in zeal in everything,
in your love for us;
Then let this work of love also excel you.
Through the act of love of our Lord Jesus Christ
I need not remind you
How he became poor for you, though he was rich,
That you might be enriched by his poverty.
It is not the intention
For you to disgrace yourselves by supporting others.
You do not want to embarrass yourselves.
A certain balance must be found.
Because the moment
your abundance fills their lack,
at another moment
their abundance will fill your lack.
This creates the balance that Scripture talks about:
“He who had gathered much ,
had not too much ,
and he who had gathered little
had no lack.
Gospel verse 2 Tim. 1, 10b
Alleluia.
Our Saviour, Jesus Christ, has destroyed death
and has given birth to eternal life
through the gospel.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mk 5, 21-43
Young woman, I tell you to rise.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark
At that time, when Jesus crossed over again in a boat, many people came to him.
Many people came to Him.
While He was on the shore of the lake,
there came a certain Jairus, the ruler of the synagogue.
When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet
and begged Him urgently:
“My little daughter may die at any moment,
come and lay your hands on her
so that she may be healed and live.
Jesus went with him.
He was joined by a large crowd, who crowded him from all sides.
Among them was a woman who had been suffering from haemorrhage for 12 years.
She had suffered a lot from all kinds of doctors
and had spent her entire fortune ,
but in vain;
On the contrary, things had got worse for her.
When she had heard about Jesus
she went forward through the crowd
and touched his cloak.
She said to herself
“If only I could touch his clothes, I would be healed,
I will be healed.
Immediately the bleeding stopped.
And she could see from her body
that she was healed from her illness.
At that same moment, Jesus realised
that a power was emanating from Him;
He turned around amid the crowd and asked:
“Who touched my garments?”.
His disciples said to Him
“You see the crowd coming towards you on all sides and you ask:
Who touched Me?
But He let His gaze wander to see who had done it.
Knowing what had happened to her
the woman came and threw herself down before Him anxious and trembling
and confessed to Him the whole truth.
Then Jesus spoke to her
“Daughter, your faith has made you well.
“Go in peace and be delivered from your affliction”.
She had not yet spoken or someone came
from the house of the superior of the synagogue with the message:
“Your daughter is dead.
“Why are you still bothering the Master?”.
Jesus heard what they said to Him
and said to the superior of the synagogue:
“Do not be afraid, continue believing.”
He did not let anyone go with Him
except Peter, James and James’ brother John.
When they arrived at the house of the superior ,
He saw the mourning crowd
of people weeping and wailing.
He went in and said to them
“Why this mourning and weeping?
“The child is not dead, but sleeping”.
But they laughed at him.
But Jesus sent them all away and went away with his companions
with his companions and with the child’s father and mother
to the room where the child lay.
He took the child’s hand and said to her:
“Talita koemi”
which translated means:
Girl, get up.
Immediately, the girl got up and started walking, for she was 12 years old.
For she was twelve years old.
And they were dumbfounded.
And he told them emphatically that no one was to know.
That no one was to know about it, and added
that they had to feed her.
