Invitation
I would like to draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel
This invitation wishes to share with you the joy of the Gospel
Everyone, without exception
can experience this joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of the Word of God.
Available every day
Consideration
The person who realises that he needs God’s mercy will be able to follow the Lord. Jesus addresses a sinner. Our Eucharist is always a meal of Jesus with sinners. What we can experience in the Eucharist, we can also pass on to others. Receiving mercy, passing on mercy to receive mercy again.
FIRST READING Am. 8, 4-6,9-12
I will bring a famine upon the land, not a famine of bread
but to hear the word of the Lord.
From the prophet Amos
“Hear this, you who lay snares for the poor
To drive the wretched out of the land,
you who reason:
When will the new moon be over?”
Then we can sell our grain!
“And when is the Sabbath?
“Then we can put out our grain!
“Then we will reduce the measure of wheat,
then we will raise the price
and cheat with false scales.
“Then we will buy the little man for money,
the poor man for a pair of shoes,
and we will trade even with the remains of our wheat.”
“On that day – so says the divine word of the Lord – I will cause the sun to set on the day the sun sets.
I will cause the sun to set at noon,
I will darken the earth in broad daylight.
“Then I will turn your feasts into mourning, all your songs into lamentations,
all your songs into lamentations;
Around all your hips I will put a sackcloth of mourning.
And all your heads I will shave bare.
“I will make the earth mourn as for an only son ;
the last day of this land shall be bitter.
Behold, the days are coming,” says the oracle of the Lord God, “that I will bring a famine upon this land .
That I will bring a famine upon this land,
not a famine for bread, nor a thirst for water,
but a famine and thirst to hear the word of the Lord.
“Then they will wander from sea to sea,
wandering from north to east
searching everywhere for the word of the Lord
but they shall not find it.
INTERLUDIO Ps 119(118), 2, 10, 20, 30, 40, 131
Man does not live by bread alone
but from all that proceeds from the mouth of God.
(Mt 4, 4b)
Blessed are those who heed what God ordains
Seek Him with all their hearts.
With all my heart I turn to You :
That I may not turn away from Your commandments.
My spirit is filled with longing
For all that You have ordained.
I have chosen the way of faithfulness,
I keep what You have commanded.
Behold, I desire to follow Your commandments;
Then let me live, O righteous God.
Panting I open my mouth
I long for Your commandments.
ALLELUIA I Thess. 2:13
Alleluia.
Receive the divine word of preaching
not as the word of men
but as what it really is:
The word of God.
Alleluia
GOSPEL Mt 9, 9-13
It is not the healthy person who needs a doctor, but the sick one.
I prefer mercy to sacrifice.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew
At that moment, Jesus continued,
He saw someone sitting by the toll house, whose name was Matthew,
and He said to him:
“Follow me.”
The man got up and followed him.
As he sat at the table in his dwelling, many tax collectors and sinners were sitting there,
many tax collectors and sinners
with Jesus and his disciples.
Seeing this, the Pharisees said to His disciples:
“Why does your Master eat with tax collectors and sinners?”.
He heard this and said:
“It is not the healthy who need a physician, but the sick.
“Go and learn what this means:
I prefer mercy to sacrifice.
“I have not come to call the righteous, but to call sinners.
But to call sinners”.
