Introdocion
When prophets confront their listeners with the hard truth
with the hard truth
they are often silenced.
Ezekiel, for example, was not heard by God’s people,
Paul was exiled and persecuted
and Jesus was not honoured in his own city.
Prophetic voices can also be heard today,
calling us to repentance and renewal.
Are we open to their message
or do we close ourselves off to its presence?
Let us pray that we may be more and more ears and eyes for what the prophets want to make clear.
For what the prophets want to make clear to us today.
FIRST READING Ezekiel 2:2-5
The people are unruly and will know that there is a prophet in their midst.
From the prophet Ezekiel
In those days the Spirit came upon me.
He made me stand upright
And I heard him speak to me
He said to me:
“Son of man, I am sending you to the children of Israel,
to that rebellious people who oppose me;
they and their forefathers
have rebelled against me
to this day.
“They are a proud and stubborn people.
“To them I send you, and you shall say to them:
Thus speaks the Lord God.
“And whether they listen or not,
-they are a rebellious people.
they shall know that there is a prophet in their midst”.
Reply Psalm 123(122), 1-2ab, 2bcde, 3-4
Refrain
Our eyes are fixed on the Lord
Until he takes care of us.
To you I lift up my eyes
To you who dwell in the heavens.
Like the slave’s eye
Focused on the hand of his master.
As the eye of the handmaid
focused on her mistress;
so our gaze is fixed on the Lord our God
until he has mercy on us.
Be merciful to us, Lord,
we cannot bear the scorn any longer.
That drunken mockery, that smug mockery!
we are disgusted by it!
SECOND READING 2 Cor 12:7-10
I will glory in my weaknesses, then the power of Christ will dwell in me.
From the holy apostle Paul’s second letter to the Christians in Corinth
Brothers and sisters,
there is
-because otherwise these extraordinary revelations would
might make me bloated
there is a thorn in my flesh,
like a messenger from Satan to scourge me.
Three times I cried out to the Lord
To go away from me.
But the Lord answered me:
“You have had enough of my grace.
“Strength is made perfect in weakness”.
So I will glory above all in my weaknesses.
Then the power of Christ will dwell in me.
Therefore, for Christ’s sake, I will gladly suffer from
weakness, defamation, distress, persecution and tribulation.
For when I am weak
then I am strong.
Gospel verse Isa 61:1 (cf. Lk 4:18)
Alleluia.
The Spirit of the Lord has come upon me,
He has sent me to bring to the poor
the glad tidings.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL McK 6, 1-6
A prophet is honoured everywhere except in his own city.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark
In those days Jesus departed from there
To go to his native city
and his disciples went with him.
And when it was Sabbath, he began to teach in the synagogue.
The many listeners asked in amazement
“How did he get that?
“And what wisdom is bestowed on him?
“And what miracles do his hands perform?
“Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joseph
and the brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon?
“And don’t his sisters live with us?
And they were offended.
But Jesus spoke to them:
“A prophet is honoured everywhere
except in his own city
among his own relatives and in his own circle”.
He could not perform miracles ,
except that he healed a small number of sick people on whom he laid his hands.
On whom he laid his hands.
He was amazed at their unbelief.
Jesus travelled through the surrounding villages
where he taught.
