Consideración
It is comforting and strengthening to realise that the Lord cares about us. He wants to be close to us, whoever we are, whatever we carry in our lives. Aren’t we all sheep without a shepherd? The Lord wants to be close to us in those he sends. They are all the baptised. The Kingdom of God grows where people shape their faith in God’s closeness to all. We can contribute to that.
FIRST READING Hos 8:4-7,11-13
You sow wind, but you will reap storm.
From the prophet Hosea
Thus speaks the Lord:
“The children of Israel have appointed kings ,
but they have not reckoned with me
they have chosen themselves as rulers
but apart from Me.
“Of their silver and gold they have made idols, good to be destroyed .
good to be destroyed.
“Remove your bull statue, Samaria!
“My wrath is kindled against them.
“How long will it last?
“Are they incapable of innocence?
“Yes, that idol is from Israel,
made by an artist there,
but it is not a god.
“Yes, it will be destroyed,
that bull statue from Samaria!
“Yes, they sow wind,
but they will reap storms;
the stalks on which there is no growth
they yield no flour,
and even if they did,
strangers devoured it.
“Yes, Ephraim made his altars numerous ,
but they were for sin,
altars for sin!
“Though I prescribe my law to him so often ,
it applies as the law of a stranger.
“They offer sacrifices according to their own pleasure
and eat of the flesh of the sacrifice
but the Lord does not accept them.
“Now He remembers their guilt
and punishes their sins:
They return to Egypt!”
Interludio Ps 115(113B), 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10
The people of Israel trust in the Lord.
The God of Israel is in heaven,
He acts as He pleases.
Their idols are silver and gold
made by human hands.
They have mouths, but do not speak,
they have eyes but do not see;
they have ears but do not hear
they have noses but do not smell.
They have hands but they do not touch,
they have feet but do not walk,
no sound comes out of their throats.
Equally reckless is he who creates them,
and who now relies on their strength.
The people of Israel trust in the Lord,
He is their helper and their shield.
The tribe of Aaron trusts in the Lord,
He is their helper and shield.
HALLELUYA Ps. 27(26), 11
Alleluia.
Show me your way, O Lord, in the face of opposition,
lead me on level paths.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mt 9, 32-38
The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew
In those days they brought to Jesus a mute man
who was possessed by the devil.
As soon as the demon was cast out, the mute man began to speak.
The people said in amazement:
“Never before had such a thing been seen in Israel.”
But the Pharisees said:
“The prince of demons allows him
to cast out demons.
Jesus went through all the towns and villages
where he taught in their synagogues
and proclaimed the good news of the Kingdom
and healed all diseases and afflictions.
When he saw those crowds
he felt pity
because they lay abandoned
like sheep without a shepherd.
Then he spoke to his disciples:
“The harvest is plentiful
but there are few labourers.
“Ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers to harvest.
To send out labourers to reap.
