Tuesday – Our Lady of mount Karmel

Patron saint of sailors

Invitation

May I draw your attention to
the daily Gospel reading

This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
Everyone, without exception
can experience that joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Consideration

That Jesus is not only successful in His proclamation tours, but also garners opposition, may be clear to us. The signs He gave are not seen by many. Jesus denounced unbelief in the cities where He preached. They ignored the miracles He did, which were a revelation of God’s love. If there is no receptivity, little can be done. So it was then, so it is now.

FIRST READING                 Isaiah 7:1-9
If you do not believe, you will not be able to resist.

From the prophet Isaiah

In those days when Achaz was king of Judah,
Rezin, king of Aram,
together with the king of Israel,
went up to Jerusalem,
but failed to subdue the city.
When news reached the house of David
that Aram had joined Ephraim,
the king’s heart and the hearts of his people trembled,
as the trees in the forest tremble when the wind blows.
But the Lord spoke to Isaiah:
“You must face Achaz ,
together with your son Shear-Jashub,
at the end of the water pipe of the Upper Pool,
on the road to the Bleacher Field.
“There you must tell him the following:
Be calm, do not be afraid
and don’t let your heart be bewildered
by those two smoking stumps of firewood,
by the fierce wrath of the king of Aram
and the king of Israel.
“For Aram together with Ephraim
and with the king of Israel
has plotted wickedness against you
and has plotted to march against Judah ,
to frighten it, to subdue it
and then to make the son of Tabeal king there,
therefore the Lord God has spoken thus:
“That will not happen! That will not happen!
“For Damascus may be the capital of Aram, and Hars the head of Damascus .
And Hars the head of Damascus,
Samaria may be the capital of Ephraim, and the king of Israel the head of Israel.
and the king of Israel the head of Samaria,
but in sixty-five years
Ephraim will cease to be a nation.
“If ye believe not, ye shall not endure!”

Interludium          Ps. 48(47), 2-3a, 3b-4, 5-6, 7-8

The city of the Lord of heavenly hosts,
God upholds it for ever.

Great is the Lord, praise be to him
In the city of our God, Jerusalem.
His holy mountain stands radiant there
A joy to all on earth.

To us Zion is the Mount of the Gods,
The city of the great King.
God himself, who dwells in his fortresses,
shows Himself a sure fortress.

Behold, the kings were gathered
And marched against it.
But when they saw it, they were afraid
And fled in terror.

Suddenly fear came upon them
Like the pain of a woman giving birth;
Like the storm from the east
Strikes the ships off the coast of Tarshish.

Alleluia            Ps. 119(118), 36a, 29b

Alleluia.
Guide my heart according to what You command, O Lord,
give me Your law as my guide.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                  Mt 11, 20-24
The fate of Tyre and Sidon
will bear the day of judgment better than yours.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew

In those days Jesus began
the cities where most of his miracles had taken place,
and reproached them for not repenting.
“Woe to you, Chorazin; woe to you, Bethsaida!
“Tyre and Sidon
would have repented long ago, clothed in sackcloth and ashes,
if the miracles had happened to them
that have happened to you.
“Yes, I tell you:
The fate of Tyre and Sidon
will be better to bear on the day of judgment than yours.
“And you, Capernaum ,
Will you ever be exalted in heaven?
“You will sink to hell.
“If in Sodom
the miracles that happened to you had happened in Sodom ,
it would have continued to this day.
“Yet I say to you :
The fate of the land of Sodom
will be better endured on the day of judgement than yours.”
