Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day

Opening word
When we come together to celebrate Eucharist,
the bread is taken, broken and shared.
We remember what Jesus himself did
When He fed the crowds.
In breaking and sharing the bread
He comes into our midst today.
Let us approach this meal with a sincere heart,
thank the Lord for his self-giving
and share in the abundance of his love.

FIRST READING              2 Kings 4, 42-44

They will eat and have left over.

From the second book of Kings

In those days someone came from Baal-Salisa.
In his bag he brought before the man of God, Elisha, as firstfruits
twenty barley loaves and some fresh wheat.

Elisha said:
“Feed this to the people.”

His servant replied:
“How can I present that to a hundred men?”

But the prophet repeated:
“Feed the people.
“For so speaks the Lord:
They shall eat and have left over.”

Now the servant put it in front of the people.
They ate and still kept over
as the Lord had said.

RESPONSORIAL             Ps. 145(144), 10-11, 15-16, 17-18

Refrain
You open Your hand, Lord, and satiate us.

Thy works shall praise Thee, Lord,
Thy pious shall praise Thee.
They praise the glory of your rule,
thy power they proclaim.

The eyes of all look hopefully to Thee,
Thou givest them food in due season.
Thou openest Thy hand to all that live,
satisfy all their desires.

The Lord is righteous in all His ways,
and holy in all that He does.
Near is the Lord to every one that calleth upon Him,
to each one who prays sincerely to Him.

SECOND READING              Eph. 4, 1-6

One body, one Lord, one faith, one baptism.

From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of
Ephesus

Brothers and sisters,

I, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you:
lead a life that responds
to the calling you have received from God,
in all humility and meekness, in longsuffering,
lovingly enduring one another.

Strive
maintain the unity of the Spirit through the bond of
peace:
one body and one Spirit,
as ye also are called to one and the same hope,
for which God’s calling is guarantor.
One Lord, one faith, one baptism.
One God, and Father of all,
who is above all, and with all, and in all.

Verse for the Gospel            Lk 7, 16

Alleluia.
A great prophet has risen among us
and God has graciously looked down on his people.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                          Jn 6:1-15

He allowed those seated to hand out as much as they wanted.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John

At that time Jesus went
across the Sea of Galilee, near Tiberias.
A great crowd followed Him
because they saw the signs He was doing to the sick.
Jesus went up the mountain
and sat down there with his disciples.
It was shortly before Easter, the feast of the Jews.

When Jesus lifted up his eyes
and saw that a large crowd was coming towards Him,
He asked Philip:
“How are we to buy bread for these people to eat?”
-This He said to test Him,
for He Himself knew what He was going to do.-

Philip answered Him:
“Will each one get even a small piece ,
then for two hundred tenlings bread is still too little.”

One of the disciples,
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter,
remarked:
“There may be a boy here with five barley loaves and two fish ,
but what does that mean for such a number?”
Jesus, however, said:
“Let the people sit down.”
For there was much grass there.
They then sat down;
the number of people was about five thousand.

Then Jesus took the loaves
and after speaking the prayer of thanksgiving,
He had them distributed among the people sitting there,
as well as the fish, as many as they wanted.
When they were satiated, He said to His disciples:
“Now collect the remaining chunks
so that nothing is lost.”
They collected them
and filled twelve baskets of the five barley loaves with lumps,
which had been left by the people after eating.

When the people saw the sign He had done, they said:
“This is surely the prophet who must come into the world.”
Since Jesus understood
that they wanted to take possession of Him
to take Him away and proclaim Him king,
He withdrew again into the mountains,
all alone.
