Wednesday – Saint Ignatius of Loyola, pr.

H. Ignatius of Loyola is the founder of the Jesuit order.
He was born in 1491 and died in 1556.

Invitation

I would like to draw your attention to
the daily gospel reading

This invitation wants to share the joy
of the gospel with you. Everyone, without exception
can experience that joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of the Word of God.

Available every day

Consideration

Sell everything you have: this is not the first time Jesus has made such a radical statement. It is a theme that recurs regularly and paints the picture of the Christian life. The treasure in question is not found by chance. It is not like the farmer who ploughs his field and suddenly stumbles upon it one fine day. The treasure has to be actively sought, like a collector who looks very specifically for a rare piece that is still missing from his collection. Are we actively seeking the Lord?

FIRST READING                    Jeremiah 15:10, 16-21

Why does my pain not cease?
Withdraw your words, says the Lord
and then I will take you back into my service.

From the prophet Jeremiah

Woe to me, O mother, that you give me life
a man with whom the whole country quarrels and argues.
I have lent nothing and borrowed nothing
yet everyone curses me.

As soon as your word came to me, O Lord, I devoured it,
it was my joy,
it filled my soul.
After all, I bear Your name, I belong to You,
Lord, God of heavenly powers.
I was never in joyful company,
I never knew joy.
I lived alone
And I was filled with Your wrath.
Why is my pain endless,
why is my wound unhealable,
why won’t it heal?
You are to me an unstable stream
over which no state can be made.

To this, the Lord replied:
“Withdraw your words ,
then I will take you back into my service.
“Speak a noble language, not an unworthy one,
then you may be my interpreter again.
“They must turn to you,
you cannot turn to them.
“Then I will make you for this people
an impregnable copper wall.
“They will fight you,
but they will not be able to do anything to you,
for I am with you
to help and save you
– so says the divine word of the Lord -,
I save you from the clutches of the mighty’.

INTERLUDIUM          Ps. 59(58), 2-3, 4-5a, 10-11, 17, 18

God is my refuge in days of trouble.

Deliver me, O my God, from the power of my enemy
Protect me when he overwhelms me.
Deliver me from those who commit injustice
From bloodthirsty people.

For behold, they constantly besiege my life,
the rulers draw a line against me.
Yet I have committed no crime, no sin.

My strength, on You alone I place my hope,
For You are my God, my protector.
Grant me Your assistance, O merciful God.

I will sing continually of Your power,
From morning till night Thy goodness towards me.
For You are to me a strong fortress,
A refuge in days of trouble.

Thou art my fortress, to Thee will I sing,
Thou art my protector, O merciful God.

Alleluia                  Ps. 119(118), 29b

Alleluia.
Set my heart on what You command, O Lord;
Give me Thy law as my guide.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                      Mt 13, 44-46

He went and sold all he had and bought that field.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew

At that moment, Jesus said to the crowd:
“The kingdom of heaven
is like a treasure hidden in a field.
“If anyone finds it, he hides it again.
And in his joy
he went and sold all he had and bought that field.
“The kingdom of heaven is also like a merchant seeking pearls
like a merchant looking for beautiful pearls.
“When he found a pearl of great value ,

he went and sold everything he owned and bought it.’
